On June 3-4, 2014, the Government of Ethiopia and the Government of the United States co-hosted the U.S.-Africa Energy Ministerial (AEM) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. AEM focused on the theme of “Catalyzing Sustainable Energy Growth in Africa” and provided a forum for major announcements and commitments that support energy development throughout Africa. The Ministerial showcased African leadership in energy development, explored strategies and effective practices across Africa and the United States for accelerating development of clean energy sources and adoption of energy efficient technologies, reviewed best practices in oil and gas resource development, and highlighted progress on the President Obama’s Power Africa Initiative. The U.S. delegation was led by Dr. Ernest Moniz, U.S. Secretary of Energy.

countries, as well as senior U.S. government officials, multilateral development partners,
regional and sub-regional African energy organizations, and U.S. and African private sector
leaders.

fastest growing economies in the world.
With the second largest population in sub-
Saharan Africa, Ethiopia’s 90 million people
offer both a growing consumer market and
a rapidly emerging technically-skilled labor
force.
•Ethiopia is endowed with substantial
renewable energy resources — including
hydropower, solar, wind, and geo-thermal.
Rough estimates place Ethiopia’s total
renewable energy generation at about
60,000MW with hydropower making up
over 75% of that potential.
•The Government of Ethiopia’s current five
year plan (2010 - 2015), includes expansion of
the current power generation to 10,000 MW
to meet growing domestic demand, but also
to position it as an energy exporter to
neighboring countries.”
