Shale technology - the new ‘Swing’ producer that sets global oil prices?
The emergence of shale technology, particularly in the US, is
dramatically challenging the conventional rules of global oil markets,
says Olivier Appert, President of the World Energy Council French
Member Committee. Shale could become be the new ‘swing’
producer in setting the price of oil on global markets.
“With the advent of non-conventional shale oil and gas production in
the US, the dynamics of the global market could be about to

New Leadership for Performance of Generating Plant Knowledge Network
B. Prasada Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Heavy
Electricals Ltd, India, is the new leader of the World Energy Council
Performance of Generating Plant, PGP, Knowledge Network. Mr Rao is
also a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, INAE.
Mr Rao will be supported by two Vice Chairs: Nathalie Mendoza, Head of
Statistics at EDF, France and Scott Stallard, Vice President, Black &

Dreams, Science and Sustainable Energy
How to ensure that when policy makers come to an agreement that
agreed actions are implemented, is one of many challenges being
discussed in a series of global scenario workshops in London.
Among the issues being hotly debated are the impact of climate change,
planetary boundaries, renewables system integration technology and
changing market structures. Attendees include industry experts from
Accenture Strategy, Enerstrat, Enel Spa, Imperial College London,

14 New Chairs and 7 New Secretaries for Member Committees across the
world
From Latin American Caribbean to Europe, Central Asia to East Asia, the
Pacific and South Asia, new Chairs and Secretaries of Membership
Committees have been appointed.
In welcoming the new Chairs and Secretaries, Christoph Frei, Secretary
General said: “With constant change in the energy world and COP21
approaching, it is a time of great opportunity and challenge for all of our

Academy Programme Update
Since the launch in Argentina in 2014 of the first World Energy
Academy programme designed to provide national level training
programmes, countries from every region have expressed their support
of the initiative.
Almost 20 countries are planning to set up Academies, with 9 countries
saying they will set up Academies in 2015. Academies in Colombia,
Italy and Mexico are already off the ground. Read more

Dr. Gheorghe Balan, born in 1929, is celebrating his 86th anniversary and
62 years of continuous professional activity in the Romanian energy
sector.
Highly involved in all the activities of the World Energy Council Romanian
National Committee for 47 years, Dr. Gheorghe Balan has been honoured
with the Diplomat ‘Lifetime Energy Excellence Award” at the Gala of
Romanian Energy Awards 2015 for his commitment to work in the energy

Lebanon Committee Supports Start Early Schools Education Intiative
In 2014 the Lebanon Member Committee awarded a $1,500 grant to the
Lebanese International University to develop a textbook on renewable
energy for elementary schools in Lebanon.
The textbook, which will be available at the Beirut Energy Forum, covers
renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and hydro using
simple terminologies and an approach that is suitable for young children
with limited knowledge of physics, chemistry and mathematics. Read

What it means to be a FEL-100: Japhet E. Miano Kariuki
Based in the Philippines, Japhet is a consultant who encourages foreign
investment into the Philippines' Extractive (Energy and Mining), Finance
and Services Industry. “Energy is the golden thread – without it there can
be no economic prosperity.”
Japhet talks about what led him to becoming a FEL-100 and what it means
to him as he looks ahead to the future. Read more
Global Leaders gathering for World Energy Council Executive Assembly
More than 20 ministers from Africa and beyond have already confirmed
their attendance, together with some of the most influential business and
policy figures in the global energy sector. Discussions will focus on how
Africa can grow and create development opportunities, whilst also
considering evolving climate policies and new resilience challenges and
the challenge of how to get investors and politicians to work together to
find ways of overcoming the obstacles. Read more

At a press conference in Istanbul, Turkey’s Energy
Minister, H.E Taner Yildiz announced Turkey’s
commitment to the World Energy Congress. The first
list of over 40 confirmed speakers, including 7
ministers, for the 23rd
World Energy Congress, “the
Energy Olympics”, on 9-13 October 2016 in Istanbul
has been confirmed.
With 70 sessions exploring energy issues that have
an impact on economic growth and competitiveness,
energy access, environment, political integration and
regional dynamics, this is a must attend event.
