New Global Gas Centre launched in St Petersburg
The Global Gas Centre, GGC, which has been established to bring together
senior leaders in the sector in order to provide a better understanding of the role
that natural gas plays in the energy mix, was launched in St Petersburg at the
beginning of October.
The Centre, whose founding members are Swissgas, ENGIE and OMV, is
already attracting new members such as Gazprom, the Belgian company Fluxys
and the National Iranian Gas Company. Read more.

Launch of New Zealand energy scenarios report
The BusinessNZ Energy Council, BEC, the World Energy Council
member committee, has launched a new report called ‘New Zealand
Energy Scenarios: Navigating energy futures to 2050’.
The report covers the development of two different scenarios of New
Zealand’s energy future out to 2050, called ‘Kayak’ and ‘Waka’. Modelled
by the Paul Scherrer Institute, the BEC is the first Council member
committee to use the Council’s scenarios modelling framework work at a

Index 2.0 work stream launched
The 2015 Energy Trilemma Index report is finalised and will be launched on 11
November. Work has now begun on the development of the 2016 Energy Trilemma
Index.
The 2016 Index – also referred to as ‘Index 2.0’ – will bring about a carefully
reviewed and revised methodology. To kick start the work of this important
development phase, an Index 2.0 expert taskforce met in London on 3 September

Across the world comment on Perspectives Report
The latest Perspectives Report ‘The road to resilience – managing and
financing extreme weather risks’, launched at the G20 meeting in Istanbul,
the German Energy Day and the North American Forum, is adding value
say members.
Support to move from ‘Fail-Safe’ systems that only look at single assets to
‘Safe-Fail’ systems that are able to combat the four – fold increase in
weather events since 1980 are welcomed. Member committees and the
FEL-100 Chair explain the relevance of the report to their country and

Energy choices and the role of nuclear in the World and Japan
Around 100 experts gathered in Tokyo to discuss the energy mix and the
role of nuclear in the world and Japan at a symposium organised by the
Japanese member committee and the Japan Energy Association.
Four expert speakers discussed ‘global perspectives of energy choices’,
‘the role of nuclear in the energy mix’ and ‘how to get public acceptance’
with the aim of establishing ‘What is a global trend?’ by comparing the
Japanese energy mix with global energy mixes. Read more.
Strategies and future programmes for cyber security
Against the background of the threat that comes from cyber crime, the
Italian member committee, in partnership with Deloitte, held the 2nd
National Conference on Energy Cyber Security in Rome with
organisational support from Energia Media.
One of the main speakers was Rita Forsi, Director General at
Communications and Technology Institute, Ministry of Economic
Development, Italy. Read more.
Energy day in Berlin generates wide ranging debates
The Energy Day in Berlin, organised by the German member
committee, drew around 220 energy experts from industry, academia
and politics. Reflecting on current developments in the global energy
world, there were two over-riding topics - climate protection via
emission trading systems, and decarbonisation against a background of
low energy prices. There was also a keynote presentation from
Roknoddin Javadi, Deputy Oil Minister of Iran. Read more.

WEC Baltic Sea roundtable discussions
Member committees from Finland, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia
and Estonia who surround the Baltic Sea gathered for the 2nd
WEC
annual Baltic Sea Roundtable. Topical issues discussed were regional
energy security and the competitiveness of Europe’s energy-intensive
economy.
Europe needs a fresh look at energy security and competitiveness was
one of five key conclusions reached. Read more
Crisis can present opportunities
A scenarios building workshop was held working with academia, industry
and the UNFCC who gave insights on topics such as climate change and
future technology disrupters. The objectives were to identify the key drivers
to construct an analytical scenario framework and to build specific scenario
narratives to 2060. It is part of an ongoing series of workshops with the
aim of developing fundamental baselines and identifying the big questions
facing the energy industry. Read more.

FEL week designed by FEL for FEL at Addis Ababa Executive Assembly
The first FEL week designed by FEL-100 with exclusive activities to include visits to Adama wind farms I
and II, a Future Energy Leaders Summit, strategic workshops and preparation of the work of the FEL
taskforces for 2016 will take place at the Executive Assembly.
Pirjo Jantunen, Chair of FEL-100 said: “I have high expectations for the first FEL week. It will be an
awesome kick-off for our taskforce work and also a good chance to develop the FEL programme further.
I encourage all Executive Assembly participants to get to know FEL-100!” Read more.
World Energy Congress momentum building
Industry and government leaders are seeing the Congress as the next step on the roadmap to achieving
sustainable energy goals after COP21. There are already eighty speakers from thirty one countries from
five continents including nine ministers who have agreed to speak at the Congress.
The organising committee of the Congress held a briefing for media around the G20 meeting where
there was widespread interest and media coverage. It reflects what our London team is observing, who
is handling a growing number of requests to speak at the Congress as well as sponsor the event.
The Congress has clearly captured the imagination of leaders and politicians alike who want to shape
the energy debate for the future. Read more.
