World Energy Council issues call to action: energy
sector to embrace new 7 realities
The World Energy Council issued a statement calling on the energy sector to
embrace a historic opportunity to redefine the energy contract ahead of the
23rd World Energy Congress held in Istanbul between 9 and13 October. The
reality that per capita demand for energy will peak before 2030, the reality
that we haven’t done enough to decarbonise our economies and the realities
for national and private balance sheets were some of the 7 realities
highlighted in the statement. Marie-José Nadeau, retiring Chair, World
Energy Council, said: “The grand energy transition is an unstoppable
phenomenon. Adapting to this new reality with innovative technologies and different business models will require a
massive effort and our ability to respond rapidly will define both winners and losers.” Read more
World Energy Council welcomes new Chair and Co-Chair
Younghoon David Kim has succeeded Marie-José Nadeau as the Chair of the World
Energy Council at the closing of the 23rd
World Energy Congress in Istanbul. Mr Kim has
had a long-lasting involvement in the Council having held the role as Co-Chair since
2013 and previously as the Council’s Vice Chair for Asia Pacific and South Asia. Mr Kim
is a member of the Energy Council of Korea and served in the last quarter of 2012 as
Acting Chair of the 22nd
World Energy Congress 2013, Daegu, South Korea. In his
inaugural speech at the 23rd
World Energy Congress Chairman Kim said:” The Council
must play a pivotal role in this process by providing a vision and a roadmap for the
sustainability and resilience of the global economy. In fact, this should not be our mission
only, but also that of everyone else in the energy sector “. Read more
2016 Executive Assembly gets off to a flying start
More than 40 member committees and a number of delegates convened at the
World Energy Council 2016 Executive Assembly in Istanbul to discuss key
global topics and regional energy issues impacting the energy sector. This
year’s event took place directly ahead of the 23rd World Energy Congress
between 7 and 9 October with the entire energy spectrum in attendance who
met to discuss critical issues facing the energy industry during a series of
events. The Assembly also resulted in principal governance decisions being
taken for the Council’s member community with comprehensive discussions
taking place during Committee meetings. A number of resolutions were
approved, including the location of the Council’s 2018 Executive Assembly. Read more
Heads of State address delegates at 23rd
World Energy Congress
Four heads of states, from some of the world’s largest suppliers of energy,
convened to discuss tackling critical energy issues at the 23rd
World Energy
Congress in Istanbul on 10 October. President Vladimir Putin of Russia,
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and President Nicolas Maduro of
Venezuela joined Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of host nation, The
Republic of Turkey on day one of the congress. President Erdogan, said
that solving problems of scarcity and delivering supplies is a first step
towards tackling the region’s most troubling problems. “Unless we solve
energy issues, we cannot solve any other issues,” he said in his keynote

Future Energy Leaders shine at 23rd
World Energy Congress
Bright young future energy leaders (FEL) networked with established leaders
while highlighting the value of the Council’s Future Energy Leaders’ programme
to young professionals within the energy sector, at the 23rd
World Energy
Congress in Istanbul. The FEL-100 Congress took place in parallel to the
main 23rd
World Energy Council Congress. Between 9 and 13 October. The FEL
congress commenced with a welcome and introduction from Pirjo Jantunen,
Chair of the Future Energy Leaders programme, followed by a FEL expert
roundtable on The future of Hydrocarbons after the Commodity price storm. The
FEL Congress culminated in the group of young leaders bringing their vision for
the future to the wider energy community during the closing ceremony. Read more

at 23rd
Congress
Following 15 workshops held around the world including in Paris, London, Johannesburg,
Washington DC and New Delhi, over the last three years, the World Energy Council 2016
World Energy Scenarios report was launched at the 23rd
World energy Congress Istanbul
on 10 October. Per capita energy demand will peak before 2030. This is in stark contrast
to historic growth levels, which have seen global demand for energy more than double
since 1970. Technological innovation, government policies and lower growth expectations
will have a significant impact on the sector in the coming decades. The findings come in a
new set of exploratory scenarios, developed by the World Energy Council in collaboration
with Accenture Strategy and the Paul Scherrer Institute. Read more
Authors of winning research papers influence future of global energy
An author of an academic paper, Regional Trilemma of the EU: Role of US LNG
Exports in Gas, was awarded first prize and the opportunity to present her paper
at the premier gathering of energy’s elite at the 23rd
World Energy Congress. Ms
Sıla Bozok’s research was one of just 20 academic papers selected by a
Scientific Committee and experts showcased at the Congress in Istanbul, held
9-13 October. A session of the congress hosted paper presentations on the 10th
and 11th
of October at Lutfi Kırdar Congress Center with the papers distributed
to all delegates on USB flash drives. Cash awards for the papers were decided
and funded by the Turkish National Committee of the World Energy Council to
motivate energy researchers. Read more

World Energy Congress was an amazing opportunity for member
committees to network and gain valuable insights from the many key players within
the energy sector. The Congress provided a unique opportunity to take a complete
and global view on pressing and long-term energy issues including visions and
scenarios for the future. With the power sector addressing a myriad of challenges to
ensure secure and sustainable future supplies, the Congress covered issues across the power spectrum ranging
from the state of nuclear energy after Fukushima, to energy security and innovation. Read more
More than 1000 registered media reported coverage of

Congress
More than 300 international media outlets including the Financial Times,
Handelsblatt, Bloomberg TV, El Pais, Die Spiegel, CNN, Reuters, China Central TV,
The National, Xinhua and Anadolu News Agency attended the 23rd World Energy
Congress. A number of member committees also brought media delegations with
them. As well as CNBC being the official media partner of the congress, CNN ran
adverts on the Congress channel in between prime news programmes such as
Amanpour and CNN Money. In total 1,208 journalists registered to cover the
Cong Congress and between 9 and 17 October the Congress and the Council was featured 15,918 times. Read more

To keep the momentum of the World Energy Congress and the Council’s thought leadership on embracing the new energy
frontiers; the World Energy Council will bring its 7 new realities messages to COP22 in Marrakesh. What does the Grand
