The 23rd World Energy Congress will take place in Istanbul from October 9-13, 2016. Over 100 heads of state and 10,000 delegates are expected to attend the event to shape global energy policies. The Congress is an influential gathering of senior energy leaders from all sectors of the energy industry. The World Energy Council will launch new reports on energy infrastructure resilience at upcoming events in Canada and Germany. These reports examine resilience challenges from extreme weather, the energy-water-food nexus, and cyber risks. The Future Energy Leaders program will hold a parallel congress for young professionals at the 23rd World Energy Congress. This will provide networking and engagement opportunities for the next generation of energy leaders.

World Energy Congress set to shape Future Global energy landscape
Momentum is building towards the 23

World Energy Congress, due to take
place in Istanbul between 9 and 13 October, just two months away.
Government ministers from almost 50 countries are among the 261
influential senior leaders confirmed to speak at the event. The Congress will
be a critical juncture in shaping the future of the global energy landscape at
a time when the industry is at a crucial transition. The Congress is
established as the most influential and inclusive gathering of senior leaders
from all segments of the energy community.

World Energy Council to pre-launch integrated resilience report at Canadian
Energy breakfast panel
World Energy Council Secretary General, Christoph Frei, will be presenting an
exclusive preview of a new informative report at an Energy Panel Breakfast
organised by the Council’s Canadian Member Committee, being held in
conjunction with the Toronto Global Forum of the International Economic Forum
of the Americas (IEFA) on 12 to 14 September 2016. The Road to Resilience:
Financing resilient energy infrastructure summarises the key findings from three
separate reports developed in collaboration with project partners Swiss Re
Corporate Solutions and Marsh & McLennan Companies, focusing on extreme
weather events, the energy-water-food nexus and cyber risks. Read more
World Energy Council launches new Rules of Trade Report at APEC
A new report by the world Energy Council addressing the need to tackle non-
tariff measures was launched at the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC) Market Access Group meeting in Lima, Peru, on 18
August. The World Energy Perspective 2016: ‘Non-tariff measures: next steps
for catalysing the low-carbon economy’, published by the Council’s Rules of
Trade Knowledge Network, includes experts from 28 countries. It explores how
an open global trade and investment regime focussing on energy and
environmental goods and services, can foster the transition to a low carbon

German member committee holds first ever Young Energy Forum
Legislative support for the Energiewende which includes greenhouse
gas reductions of 80–95% by 2050 (relative to 1990), and a renewable
energy target of 60% by 2050, was passed by the German government in
2010. In this context the first Young Energy Forum organised by the German
member committee of the World Energy Council, brought together young
energy professionals for open discussions. The event, ‘Cost and benefit of
Energy Transition: What has to be paid by future generations and will the
investment ever pay-off’, took place at the EUREF Campus on 3 June in
Berlin, and was organised in the form of an interactive workshop. Read more

Colombia launches fourth chapter of World Energy Academy
Almost 70 energy professionals were introduced to the World Energy Council as
Colombia launched its fourth chapter of the World Energy Academy on 3
August. Cristina Morales, Regional Manager, Latin America and the
Caribbean at the World Energy Council, opened the launch with a presentation
about the Council and the academy training programme. This was followed by a
presentation of innovation in the energy sector by Ruben Dario Cruz of CIDET
and ended with a presentation on smart cities by Daniel Diaz of the World
Energy Council Colombian member committee. Read more

More than fifteen energy leaders from the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Energy,
ECOWAS, and the Volta River Authority attended an event chaired by Professor
Akabzaa, Honorary Chair of the World Energy Council Ghanaian member
Committee. At the event, the participants were given an overview of the
Council’s activities within the region and the latest developments within the

FELs set to declare vision for the future at 23rd
World Energy Congress
The Future Energy Leaders’ (FEL) Congress will be an amazing opportunity for
young energy leaders to network and meet with senior energy leaders as well as
highlight the value of the Council’s Future Energy Leaders’ programme to young
professionals within the energy sector. The FEL-100 Congress will take place in
parallel to the main 23

World Energy Council Congress. It is one of the main
events in the FEL programme and a unique platform for the FEL group to meet
in person and to get to know each other. The FEL Congress programme
consists of various themes from the future of hydrocarbons to talent

Young Austrian energy professionals gather to share latest developments in
Energy
For the second year running members of the World Energy Council’s Austrian
Young Energy Professional’s Programme (YEP) gathered at the power grid
control facility of the Austrian Power Grid (APG) in Vienna, to share their latest
developments and findings over the past year. During the recent meeting, four
working groups presented their findings and shared their progress on issues
high on the energy agenda including: technological innovations, the energy
transition, alternative funding models and digitalisation of the electricity

New cyber resilience report to launch at Energy Day in Berlin
The world energy Council will be launching the third report in the Road to
Resilience series at the Energy Day organised by the German member committee
in Berlin on 29 September. This report investigates how cyber risks can best be
managed, taking into account the changing nature of the energy industry and
energy infrastructure. Drawing on insights from a network of energy industry
experts, the report assesses the ways in which vulnerabilities in current and new
energy infrastructures are changing. The report also recommends several actions
that energy decision makers and stakeholders can take – individually and
collaboratively – to improve the sector’s response to rising cyber threats.

Member committees’ new logo: last chance before the World Energy
Congress
The 2016 Executive Assembly and the 23
rd
World Energy Congress will be the opportune time for the Council’s
members to celebrate the new visual identity they enthusiastically approved a year ago. Almost 60 MCs have
chosen their new logo and we encourage all remaining World Energy Council member committees who have not
yet been in touch to contact Kristina at acker@worldenergy.org with their preferred option by 27 August. This will
ensure they receive their logo before the Congress to celebrate their new visual identity together with the whole
network.
Together with the new logos, MC specific templates have also been provided for all MCs to maximise their new
brand exposure through email signatures, letterheads, powerpoint and many more.
