MEANING OF URBAN SOCIOLOGY
 The word urban has been defined in the Oxford Dictionary
as ―pertaining to town or city life. It is derived from the
Latin ‗Urals‘ a term used by the Roman - a city.
 The dictionary meaning of urban‘ is city‘, which
describes the city life.
Introduction
 Urban sociology is branch of sociology
 Urban sociology is the sociological study of
the human interaction in metropolitan areas.
Human interaction ?
Metropolitan areas?
Social interaction:
Erving Goffman was a sociologist who
created a new field of study called microsociology, or
social interaction. Social interaction is the process
by which we act and react to those around us. In a
nutshell, social interaction includes those acts people
perform toward each other and the responses they
give in return. Interaction is usually divided into five
categories. These are:
• exchange
• competition
• cooperation
• conflict
• coercion.
Metropolitan
A metropolitan area is a region consisting of
a densely populated urban core and its less-populated
surrounding territories, sharing industry,
infrastructure, and housing
INTRODUCTION
 In the field of sociology, the
subset termed "urban
sociology" deals with the
psychology of people and the
lifestyle and developmental
changes occurring in a specific
urban environment, which
refers to a city, state, or
country, depending on the
context.
 Urban sociology is a study of
urbanization, a social process
in which cities grow and
societies become more urban
in nature. Lifestyle habits may
change as people in these
areas are affected by the
increases in population, the
residual effects to the
environment, and the slow
depletion of natural resources
that accompany such sizable
changes and growth.
Urban Sociology is a keen, interesting and
practical subject which deals with city life,
specialization of the study of complex human
situations, deals with city organization and
disorganization, cultural changes, overall development
of civilization, economic development, political and
social changes. It is a place exactly different and
antithetical with rural community.
Q.1 How does
urban life is
different from
rural life?
DEFINITION OF URBAN SOCIOLOGY
Louis Wirth, an American Sociologist says that urban society is
―a place designed gracefully with different zones with definite
purposes.
According to Prof. Quinn, urban community is ―a non-
agricultural community.
Max Weber, the German sociologist in his book ‗The City‘,
defined Urban Sociology‖ as a whole system characterized by
complex order of social actions, social relations and social
institutions. It has following features –
a market, a fortification, a complicated legal system, including a
court and an elected body of administration.
subject-matter :
Urban sociology is the study of cities and
towns. The scientific study of the problems which crop
up in the city life as a result of the development of the
industrialization is the main subject-matter of urban
sociology. Apart from it, the study of city-communities
and organization etc. also comes under the purview of
the urban sociology.
The importance of this field of study is to
understand the institutions and structures that make up a
metropolitan area so as to work with policy makers to solve social
problems in urban areas. Much of society today focuses
on Urbanization or the developing of urban areas which are in stark
contrast to rural areas and therefore have completely different social
problems. A large portion of those living in urban areas tend to be
focused on how individualistic, independent, and unique they can be
which in turn can lead to discrimination and a lack of caring for
others. Urban planners and urban sociologists attempt to solve
the problems that uniquely plague highly populated urban
areas.
Father of Urban Sociology:
Georg Simmel is widely considered to be the father of urban
sociology for his contributions to the field in in works such
as The Metropolis and Mental Life, published in 1903.
