The Trip <ul><li>Columbus asked for support from Portugal, England, France, and Spain. </li></ul><ul><li>All rejected him </li></ul><ul><li>Columbus persisted and Queen Isabella of Spain agreed to help. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1492, he was outfitted with the Santa Maria , the Pinta , and the Nina. </li></ul>
  3. 3. The Trip Begins <ul><li>On Friday, August 3 rd 1492, Columbus began the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. </li></ul><ul><li>Christopher left from Spain with a crew of 87 men and a fleet of three ships. </li></ul>

Multiple Voyages Between 1492 and 1504 <ul><li>Four Trips </li></ul><ul><li>Second Voyage -he sailed with more than 1,000 men and 17 ships </li></ul><ul><li>Established a Spanish colony on Hispaniola </li></ul><ul><li>Hispaniola consists of Haiti and the Dom. Rep. </li></ul><ul><li>Columbus also discovered Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica </li></ul>

Last Trip <ul><li>&quot;High Voyage“ </li></ul><ul><li>Four ships and 135 men </li></ul><ul><li>They crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 21 days - the fastest ocean crossing </li></ul><ul><li>Discovered the coast of Central America, including Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Martinique. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Summary <ul><li>Columbus is credited with discovering the New World. </li></ul><ul><li>Although Christopher was not the first person to discover the Americas, he was the first European to discover and return to the Americas. </li></ul>
