Over 50% of patients undergoing allogeneic BMT can now be expected to become long-term survivors. Unfortunately many survivors experience an increased risk of secondary cancers, infections and chronic diseases.
Pathways to smoking care for cancer patients (P-SCIP): Stage 1Cancer Institute NSW
As survival from cancer has improved over time, the potential impact of cigarette smoking on cancer patients and survivors is of increasing relevance. In addition to increased risk of chronic disease such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, continued smoking after a cancer diagnosis increases the risk of second primary cancer, cancer recurrence and is a cause of treatment complications. As well the profound adverse impact of continued smoking on health outcomes in cancer patients, continued smoking among people with cancer incurs significant cost to the health system.

The Envisia Genomic Classifier is the first commercially available genomic test to improve the diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The test harnesses the power of RNA sequencing and machine learning to improve physicians’ ability to differentiate IPF from other interstitial lung diseases (ILD) without the need for invasive, risky and costly surgery.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women worldwide. Cancer can be discovered early, lowering the rate of death. Machine learning techniques are a hot field of research, and they have been shown to be helpful in cancer prediction and early detection. The primary purpose of this research is to identify which machine learning algorithms are the most successful in predicting and diagnosing breast cancer, according to five criteria: specificity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy, and F1 score. The project is finished in the Anaconda environment, which uses Python's NumPy and SciPy numerical and scientific libraries as well as matplotlib and Pandas. In this study, the Wisconsin diagnostic breast cancer dataset was used to evaluate eleven machine learning classifiers: decision tree, quadratic discriminant analysis, AdaBoost, Bagging meta estimator, Extra randomized trees, Gaussian process classifier, Ridge, Gaussian nave Bayes, k-Nearest neighbors, multilayer perceptron, and support vector classifier. During performance analysis, extremely randomized trees outperformed all other classifiers with an F1-score of 96.77% after data collection and data analysis.
The shared radiology workflow consists of physician’s referral, study approval, scheduling, patient arrival, imaging, reporting, validating, and results distribution. The performance of this process can be measured on different levels: resources utilization, current operations, and outcomes.
The end-result of the process is defined by the goal, which can also vary. The major goals are effectiveness (e.g. high-quality, high-safety, high-volume, high-accessibility services, patients’ and physicians’ satisfaction), efficiency (cost-effectiveness, cost-control, revenue generation), and health improvement (better treatment because of accurate diagnostics, less morbidity and mortality because of early diagnostics).
The problem with the radiology services is that we often incorrectly measure incorrect metrics. Wherever we see systematic measurement of results in health care—no matter what the country—we see those results improve (R.S. Kaplan, M.E. Porter).
Hence, we should move from current radiology operational metrics (report turn-around-time, back-log time, discrepancies, equipment utilization rate, revenue) to clinical operational metrics (diagnosis-related delays of treatment, time to begin treatment) and outcome measurements (patients’ and clinicians’ satisfaction, gross margin of services, involvement in disease-specific clinical teams, better treatment because of accurate diagnostics).
The best method for tackling ‘bottlenecks’ is time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) through better resource utilization, standardized processes, proper staffing, and logistics optimization.
Building an enabling IT platform is the key for embedding the changes in the system.
Ideal physician measurements are aligned to electronic data collection, attributable to individuals, cascade from organizational goals, supported by evidence and physicians, comparative, and transparent.
A project with the aim to standardize an RBM approach in clinical trials. It unites four companies and academic organizations, focuses on the evaluation and optimization of Risk-based Monitoring (RbM). For this purpose, PUEKS will use data available from past clinical studies to select substantiated key risk indicators (KRIs). Subsequently, the obtained data-driven KRIs will be tested in an ongoing trial. A comparative evaluation with historical data from past studies will be additionally performed to evaluate the power of the selected KRIs in terms of cost savings, enhanced quality, and risk mitigation. The project is aimed at delivering a robust RbM tool as well as an optimized procedure for the successful implementation of RbM.

Are you interested in learning how to prevent hospital readmissions for your diabetic population? It is a popular belief that measuring blood glucose for your diabetic population is the most predictive variable in determining a hospital readmission for a diabetic. However, many providers of care simply do not perform the test on known diabetic patients. This study takes a look at an advanced analytic method that works within the current healthcare providers workflow to looks to identify the likelihood of a future 30-day unplanned readmission before hospital discharge.
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!
