public holiday and a New Year according to the
ancient Oriental calender.
The system of celebration is very easy: a special
council of representatives from each class choose
the class which will prepair the holiday at school.
The chosen class gives orders to other classes to
prepare a drawing on a big size of paper showing
Nauryz in imagination of each class. We call it
‟shkolnaya gazeta‟ which means „school newspaper‟.
After that pictures are hung on a special stand and
there is such a picture gallery made by all the
students

35. Naurys Holiday
in City
It isn’t a religious, political,
civil holiday. It is a national
holiday, that’s why it is so
cheerful and kind. People
prepare for Nauryz
beforehand: clean their
homes, buy new clothes,
clean out their yards. Streets
are decorated with flags;
national yurts are put in
places of celebration.
Children in kindergartens
have fun mornings, pupils at
schools - concerts, people in
businesses and government
organizations - banquets.
People are wearing national
costumes and customs of the
ancestors are remembered.
At a makeshift, ornamented
scene people dance and
sing. Various horseback
competitions are very popular
on this day.
36. Kazakhs determined spring by the
sun, as soon as the warm rays of the
sun penetrated the yurt through its
upper opening. According to the old
chronology, this day usually
coincides with the March 21 - the
day of vernal equinox. That’s why
Kazakhs named the month of March
– Nauryz. People believe that
renewal in nature, the first spring
thunder, the swelling buds on the
trees, germination of greenery
happen on this day. It is also a day of
forgiveness and mercy. That’s’ why
people expect the best changes in
their lives.
37. Nauryz Activities
Baiga: racing for a long distance. Kyz kuu (catch up a girl): a brave
(“dzhigit”) galloping has to catch up and kiss a young rider. If he
fails, on the way back a girl punishes him with strikes of a lash.
Kok-pairs: a kind of equestrian football, in which instead of a ball
people use beheaded carcass of a goat.
Kumis Alu – a jump with elements of the art of riding: a rider at full
gallop has to pick up a coin; its location is marked with light sand or
sawdust. The winners receive prizes.
38. On “Nauryz”
holiday people
participate in
atheletic
competitions both
girls and boys.
A girl invites a
young man -
“dzhigit ” to
compete and if he
wins, he will have
a right on her
hand and heart,
but if she wins, so
he must obey her
and realize any her
wishes.

great opportunity to meet the

big dastarkhan (a holiday
table).
Nauryz-kozhe is the main dish.
It is a kind of soup, made of 7
components: water, meat
(horsemeat, mutton), fat, flour,
