Untraceable: Mise-en-scene, lighting, editing, camera angles
Titles and production companies are key for any film. Most titles come with their own theme music for example 20 th century fox and universal studios. For Untraceable we decided that our titles should not have their own theme music but they should have a dramatic score similar to the ones we use throughout the opening.
The first credit is displayed in front of a brick wall, we used the wall to create the idea of a barrier and having my name in front of it shows that my character has barriers in his life. This is the same for Cornelious’ character.
To reveal my character we used a slow reveal. After one or two credits a part of my body is shown leading up to my face. We did this to connote a sense of mystery and to engage the audience instantly and have them guessing from the start. My costume is simple, it is a suit. We can see that i am young so the use of a suit shows that i may not be mature enough and thats what has got me in this situation? Again the audience is left guessing.
this is one of my favourite scenes. We filmed lots of different angles for this scene for example there is high angle shots and point of view shots and close ups. We then we chose the best ones, this was done to create a sense of panic and to allow the audience to connect with my character.
The orchestral dramatic scores are kept a constant throughout the opening until this shot. One of my favourite shots because this is where we are shown Cornelius’ hand and is the first time we can relate to him as a human being. we didn’t want to have music in this shot, we wanted silence but with faint water dripping and echoing in the background. The echo and the silence was purely to show both characters isolation, mine in particular. There is only one light source throughout the entire opening and that is from above my head, we did this to cut off my character from the rest of the room and in effect, the world.
This high angle shot is simply to show Cornelious’ character’s power over my character and that is mirrored through the pain that he causes me. And obviously the dialogue shows that these characters have a history, and not a very good one at that. We needed to find a way of showing cornelious’ characters anger without facial expression so to achieve this we use his hands and his voice.
We used a blurred effect to connote my characters feelings. At this point he is disorientated, frightened and alone and i think the use of the blur and also the heartbeat sound effect achieve this. The screams were important as they are used to disturb the audience but i also think that it grasps them. when the lights come back on i am lying on the floor and have come free from the chair. Despite this i still have no desire to retaliate, this amplifies how weak i am and the fear of the situation and this increases my vulnerability. When the light goes out it is quite sinister and combined with the muffled screams its disturbing.
The colour of the title is the most important aspect as the deep red colour can connote danger but it can also imply passion or desire , cornelious’desire to want to hurt my character.
