Frame 1 introduces the first production company logo. Frame 2 introduces the second production company logo with special effects. Frame 3 keeps the title font, style, and size consistent. Frame 4 establishes tension through Ross's scared expression and being tied to a chair in dark lighting. Frames 5-6 continue building tension by showing Ross's fear and being tortured. Frame 7 introduces the antagonist Cornelius through his costume and props. Frame 8 shows Cornelius threatening Ross with a saw as Ross expresses fear. Frame 9 displays the movie title. Overall, the document analyzes how the frames use lighting, costumes, props and other cinematic techniques to effectively set up tension and introduce the characters for a thriller genre opening.

1. 9 Frames of Our Opening "Untraceable"

2. Frame 1 Blue tide production is our first production company which we used in our opening at the start of it. It is simple but effective, it is animated like the real ones in real movies, making it professional and not boring.

3. Frame 2 This is the second title for the production companies called Perfect Link. The logo has been animated with links appearing before “Perfect Link” and attach themselves. This adds special effects to our opening which makes it a good opening and looks like real media products out there.

4. Frame 3 The title of the font, style and size is kept the same through out the opening, this makes the movie look professional and consistent at the same time.

5. Frame 4 We can see how the lighting is used here very effectively, we can only see the victim (Ross) and the background is dark – this suggests that something bad/scary could happen so it creates tension to the audience. As well as this, we can see how Ross is dressed, he is dressed smartly (business dress) from this we can tell that the movie is about business or can relate to it. The camera shot in this still image is a close up shot showing only half of Ross but in the moving image the camera pans up so we see all of Ross starting from the bottom and panning all the way up to his face. This shows Ross and the situation he’s in at the moment the audience see how he is taped to a chair and cant move which again creates tension.

6. Frame 5 Here we have a close up of Ross’s face where we can see tension and fear in his eyes. His face is half lit with the lighting which I thought was quiet effective making the whole shot real.

7. Frame 6 In this image we see the victim being tortured and there is a sense of power as we can see the camera angle is a high angle shot showing Ross getting hurt by Cornelius.

Frame 7 The costumes and the props used for Cornelius are a hat, big black coat, glasses, saw which we see later on, all this makes him look like “the bad man he is...” He turned bad because of what happened before, one thing that he says in the opening is about the past that Ross “the victim” “took everything from him” which sets the story of what happened and what will happen. This is how the characters are introduced, Cornelius being the bad guy who wants revenge and Ross the victim who could of done something in the past.

9. Frame 8 Frame 8 is where Cornelius “the bad guy” wants to kill Ross “the victim” with the saw. We can see how scared Ross is from this still image which creates tension for the audience. Also Ross is dressed in a smart way which suggests he's a business man which can relate to what he took from Cornelius. We can tell that this is a thriller type film because of the way its set up, we don’t know what happened, we also don’t see the “bad guys” face. We don’t know if Ross gets killed or not in the end of the opening. There is a lot of tension too created by the fear of Ross and the anger of Cornelius. Further more the equipments used too like the tape on Ross’ mouth the customs, props, setting and lighting too.

10. Frame 9 (The Title of the movie) This is the title of the film which is Untraceable, it is animated, and looks flashy, its done by special effects using programs like Adobe Flash, then made into a movie image to work with the program we used to make the whole opening (iMovie) so we can edit it into the movie itself.

11. Overall As a group I think we have used many of these conventions, as these 9 still frames show. So our thriller has many of these scenes. For example the lighting used in our thriller creates the whole atmosphere and I think that was very important; the way it was set to light ( not the whole room was lit) changes the whole scene into a thriller. Moreover, our thriller has a mixture of props which were used purposely to make it a successful thriller, the props used were saw, chair, sun glasses, tape, and etc... All these play an important role in the opening, for example the sun glasses are used because they cover the kidnappers face (so no one can see his face clearly). Our thriller challenges these conventions because we used the conventions at the right time and for the right reasons. For example the use of editing and music is done very carefully to match the purpose of our thriller, we don’t want hip hop music if we are trying to create tension. Its more like dark, scary music. Another example through mise en scene is the customs used in our opening is very effective, the characters have suits on and they look smart which suggests that they are business men which is a hint on what all this thriller is about. After reviewing our class mates thrillers we found out similar successful conventions and some were not as successful as they could of been; however I think we have developed our conventions into real products successfully and from there created a good opening for the thriller type genre.
