2. Welcome to the University of
Nottingham
Britain’s Global University
3. A global university
• International campuses in China and
Malaysia
• International community of students
from over 140 countries
4.
5. The UK Strategy for Outward Student Mobility aims to
double the percentage of UK-domiciled, full-time, first
degree students* who undertake international placements
as part of their higher education programmes from 6.6%
in 2014 to 13.2% in 2020. This will create a new
generation of global graduates, and a higher education
culture in which international opportunities are an
aspiration for all students
UK STRATEGY FOR OUTWARD STUDENT MOBILITY 2017-2020
6. • The Go International: Stand Out campaign
• Currently, just 6.6% of UK undergraduates spend two
weeks or more studying, working or volunteering
overseas as part of their degree experience. Yet,
across three years of cohort studies (UUKi’s ‘Gone
International’ report series), we have seen that
students who have a mobility period consistently have
stronger academic and employment outcomes than
those who do not, and this is more pronounced for
students from less advantaged backgrounds.
7. • The U21 Student Experience Steering Group
oversees the student experience
• U21 Student Experience group connects
members to broaden and enhance the student
experience around the U21 network. The SE
Steering Group oversees this work and the
work of the sub-groups: the Student Mobility
Group and the Careers and Employability
Group.
8. • Outward student mobility for nurse, midwife and
AHP students 2017
• The benefits of outward mobility are many and
varied. At the individual level, mobility helps to
build critical global skills such as intercultural
awareness and foreign language competency. It
also boosts students’ performance across several
key indicators in higher education, from
attainment to employability.
9. University of Nottingham Embedding Internationalisation Goals and Actions
Offer opportunities in our formal curriculum and the
broader university experience that ensures all students
experience a high-quality international education
Increase the global reach and impact of our research by
strengthening and increasing the number of international
collaborations
“The distinctive way we have internationalised brings
unique advantages. It exposes our students to cross-
cultural ways of thinking and understanding, helps them
understand other people’s perspectives, builds networks
for life which can span the globe and promotes broader
understanding and social cohesion.”
12. School facts and figures
200+ staff; 2300+ students
Three divisions: Nursing, Midwifery,
Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Sciences
Second largest School at University of
Nottingham in terms of student numbers
13. Global engagement in the School of Health Sciences
The School has a comprehensive Strategy for Global Engagement that sees
internationalisation embedded into all of its activities. The overall goal of the
School’s work around Global Engagement is to enhance the international reach,
significance and impact of its teaching, research and knowledge exchange
activities, and to be known for its commitment to global health. Providing
opportunities for study abroad is an intrinsic part of the School’s approach to
offering students a globally relevant transformative educational experience. To
this end, the School has created a role for a senior academic who is ‘Student
Mobility Lead’, it has a Student Mobility Strategy and a Student Mobility
Committee made up of Academic Leads from each of the Divisions.
14. Proportions of students undertaking study abroad
All pre-registration undergraduate midwifery, physiotherapy and nursing
students are offered an opportunity within their programmes to undertake an
international placement.
In 2015/16 (the last period for which complete figures are available), 17% of
graduating students had an overseas placement. These figures vary from 16% for
Nursing, 28% for Midwifery and 21% for Physiotherapy
This number is increasing year on year both for international elective placement
Erasmus opportunities and U21 opportunities
16. • A ‘menu’ of international opportunities
• In addition to our elective/Erasmus+
programmes, the School provides a number of
other international opportunities, encouraging
and supporting students to attend:
• International summer schools such as the
Universitas 21 annual summer school
• International student workshops and
conferences
