Congress enacted the federal minimum wage in 1938, during the Great Depression. Congress had
two goals; keeping workers away from poverty and boosting consumer spending for economic
recovery. Today, there is a debate, whether we should increase the minimum wageagain. Increasing
the minimum wage is useful for several reasons. First, the current minimum wage has failed to keep
up with inflation. Second, a higher income level reduces employee turnover and increases
efficiency and ultimately, raising the minimum wage does not reduce employment. Even with high
unemployment rates, the minimum wage is useful for the economy.
Today the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour since July 24, 2009. It has failed to keep up
with inflation. The real value of the minimum wage rose steadily from 1938 until its value
reached a peak in 1968. Thereafter, it suffered severe erosion as Congress failed to adjust for the
inflation over time. The minimum wage of $1.60 an hour in 1968 would be $10.47 today when
adjusted for inflation. This means that the purchasing power of the minimum wage has decreased
significantly over time. The current minimum wage is no longer enough to protect workers out
of poverty. A person who earns the minimum wage and works full time (40 hours/week, 52
weeks/year) only earns about $12,000 in a year. This is almost $7,000 below the poverty line for a
family of three ($19,090)

the right into the library hallway. Some folks look tired; possibly from a long weekend or maybe
a late night studying the previous day. Some are wide awake and upbeat as though they received a
good night s rest and has a fairly easy weekend.
The atmosphere is busy and rushed yet is oddly soothing. A smooth jazz song plays over the
speaker above. The smell of fresh brewed coffee and espresso beans fills the air. Baristas call out
names as orders are completed, Britany, Taylor, Drew, Melissa. The baristas are focused, not
wavering from their tasks as they fill orders; some complicated and some just a simple iced coffee.
The wait time is anywhere from fifteen to forty five minutes. Many people stand with inpatients;
tapping their feet and faces expressing discontent.
A table of girls sit in the back corner discussing the night before. One girl mentions not getting
enough sleep due to being up late studying for an exam she has at one o clock today. Another girl
talks about being really stressed out. She mentions an exam in the next couple days and two
papers due at the end of the week. The mention of something in her personal life, the main point
of stress, sweeps her lips but is said in a hushed tone so that only the people directly around her
are aware of the topic. Another girl in the cluster talks about how her drink is not being
completed fast enough, throwing a few profanities in her statement. She is seemingly oblivious

Vivian Johnson, a nurse. Angelou and her older brother, Baileyv Jr., grew up with their
grandmother in rural Stamps, Arkansas (source 1). Angelou and her brother spent four years in
their grandmother s care. Although Angelou and her brother thrived there, their father decided to
send them back to live with their mother and her boyfriend in California. As for education,
Angelou attended public schools in both Arkansas and California. ((source 1). Angelou went on
to study dance and theater at the California Labor School but eventually dropped out to become
the first female African American streetcar conductor. (source 11). Being a young black woman
in the mid 1900s, Angelou faced countless person struggles. Unfortunately, her trouble did not
end with race, At the age of eight, Angelou was raped by her mother s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman.
Angelou confided in her brother Bailey and he, in turn, told the proper authorities. Angelou
testified against Mr. Freeman in court. He was found guilty but ultimately stayed in jail only for
a night. The next day, Mr. Freeman was found beaten to death, likely by Angelou s uncles. After
this incident, young Angelou did not speak for almost five years, She believed her words could
kill (source 2). Angelou did not literally kill Mr. Freeman by her testimony, but her words
definitely had an effect on others. One can see from an early age that Angelou understood the
