The International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium was created in 2005 to coordinate an international effort to sequence the genome of bread wheat and deliver a high quality reference genome to scientists and breeders. The IWGSC is working to construct physical maps of the hexaploid bread wheat genome anchored to genetic maps, sequence the genome, and completed the physical map of wheat's D-genome progenitor Ae. tauschii. This will provide scientists and breeders with tools to accelerate wheat improvement efforts.
