2. What is United Nations ?
United Nations [UN] is an organisation which helps maintain peace in the world.

3. How did UN formed?
Representatives of 15 countries met at San Francisco in USA on 24 October 1945
and signed a charter. India was one of them. This charter created a new
international organisation, The United Nations Organisation [UNO].
24 October is United Nations Day.
The headquarters of the UN are in New York. The Secretary-General is the chief
administrative officer of the UN.
4. What are the Objectives of UN ?
The Objectives of UN are:
•To promote peace in the world
•To promote cooperation among nations.
•To protect human rights
The UN does not frame any laws nor does it impose taxes. It is where the issues
are discussed and solutions are worked out.
5. How many and what is/are the Organs of
the UN
There are six main Organs of UN.
•General Assembly
•Security Council
•Economic and Social Council
•Trusteeship Council
•Secretariat
•International Court of Justice [ICJ]
6. General Assembly
The General Assembly is the main organ. Each member state has one vote in
General Assembly. It meets every year in September to discuss and debate
issues on the peace and security.
7. Security Council
The Security Council is responsible for maintaining international peace and
security. It has 15 members, five of which are permanent. China, France, Russia,
the United Kingdom, and the USA are the permanent members. The rest are
non-permanent members who are elected for a period of two years.
8. Economic and Social Council
The UN created a network of agencies to help poor, the sick , and illiterate.
These agencies look after issues such as human rights, equality of women and
regulation of trade. The work of these agencies is coordinated by Economic and
Social council.
9. Trusteeship Council
The Trusteeship Council ‘was’ established to supervise the administration of
trust territories of the world, which were not independent then. The Trusteeship
Council is no longer functional as now all of them became independent.
11. International Court of Justice [ICJ]
The International court of Justice is the principal Judicial organ of the UN. It
settles disputes between countries and advises member states on matter of
international law. The court has 15 judges. The headquarters are at the Hague in
the Netherlands.
