•Summary
• The fifteenth of August is a red-letter day for all of us. That is our Independence Day. Many
people sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom. However, most of them are not remembered
today.
• To mark this memorable day, our government has declared Independence day as an important
national holiday.On 15t August, we are to remember our martyrs and celebrate our freedom.
Lectures and seminars are organised in schools and government offices. There are flag hoisting
ceremonies in schools, colleges and offices.
• One Independence Day, Sudha Murthy was on one of her week-long tours in rural area in
Karnataka. That year, 15 August fell on Friday. Sudha Murthy thought she would visit some
schools and participate in their celebrations. As she was staying in town, she had to go to the
bus stand to travel to village school seven kilometers away.
Characters
• At the bus stand, she met the headmaster of one of the schools she wanted to visit. He was very
happy to see Sudha Murthy and greeted her warmly. He seemed to be in hurry asked Sudha
Murthy whether she was going to Banglore. He tells that if she was not working on Saturday, it was
going to be a long weekend. Sudha Murthy tells that she is not going to Banglore. The headmaster
tells that he is going to Banglore.
•She asks him won’t he has to attend the school for flag hoisting. He tells her that this is a ritual
every year and a total waste of time. In his twenty years of service, he had grown bored of these
national holidays. He wished that the government declared it as a complete holiday. He was going
to Banglore to see which people were concerned with his transfer to district headquarters as his
daughter wanted to study computer science.
• About the function in school he had asked his assistant master to conduct the program and had
also given him a copy of the speech he had prepared twenty years ago. Students are not interested
in celebrations. They are more interested to go and see the film in the tent near their village.
• The following week, Sudha Murthy returned to Banglore.She went to her friend’s house for dinner.
She is also a teacher. Sudha Murthy asks her how did she and her school celebrate 15 August.
Summary (cntd)
• She tells it was horrible. They went to school early in the morning. They had invited a senior
government official as the chief guest. The headmistress also was present. But the students did
not come. Out of about thousand students, only 50 students attended the programme.
• As it happened to be a long weekend and the parents took the children away on holiday. Many
students who were in Banglore were seen at the theatres. There was also heavy rush at video shops
as well. It was a bad show in front of their chief guest.
• Even the attendance is compulsory, the students will produce false medical certificates. Sudha
Murthy’s friend says that 15 August and 26 January should be normal working days. According to
her they have become a holiday to make merry and not a day to remember the saga of our leaders.
Sudha Murthy did not know what to say.
• Thus this story talks about a headmaster and a teacher’s experience regarding 15th August. One
wants it to be a holiday whereas the other wants it to be a working day. Both of them agree that
15 August is treated like a holiday. These are the two opposite point of views expressed in the
story.

  • 3. • Sudha Murthy • Headmaster of a School • Sudha Murthy’s teacher friend in Bangalore •Summary • The fifteenth of August is a red-letter day for all of us. That is our Independence Day. Many people sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom. However, most of them are not remembered today. • To mark this memorable day, our government has declared Independence day as an important national holiday.On 15t August, we are to remember our martyrs and celebrate our freedom. Lectures and seminars are organised in schools and government offices. There are flag hoisting ceremonies in schools, colleges and offices. • One Independence Day, Sudha Murthy was on one of her week-long tours in rural area in Karnataka. That year, 15 August fell on Friday. Sudha Murthy thought she would visit some schools and participate in their celebrations. As she was staying in town, she had to go to the bus stand to travel to village school seven kilometers away. Characters
  • 4. • At the bus stand, she met the headmaster of one of the schools she wanted to visit. He was very happy to see Sudha Murthy and greeted her warmly. He seemed to be in hurry asked Sudha Murthy whether she was going to Banglore. He tells that if she was not working on Saturday, it was going to be a long weekend. Sudha Murthy tells that she is not going to Banglore. The headmaster tells that he is going to Banglore. •She asks him won’t he has to attend the school for flag hoisting. He tells her that this is a ritual every year and a total waste of time. In his twenty years of service, he had grown bored of these national holidays. He wished that the government declared it as a complete holiday. He was going to Banglore to see which people were concerned with his transfer to district headquarters as his daughter wanted to study computer science. • About the function in school he had asked his assistant master to conduct the program and had also given him a copy of the speech he had prepared twenty years ago. Students are not interested in celebrations. They are more interested to go and see the film in the tent near their village. • The following week, Sudha Murthy returned to Banglore.She went to her friend’s house for dinner. She is also a teacher. Sudha Murthy asks her how did she and her school celebrate 15 August. Summary (cntd)
  • 5. • She tells it was horrible. They went to school early in the morning. They had invited a senior government official as the chief guest. The headmistress also was present. But the students did not come. Out of about thousand students, only 50 students attended the programme. • As it happened to be a long weekend and the parents took the children away on holiday. Many students who were in Banglore were seen at the theatres. There was also heavy rush at video shops as well. It was a bad show in front of their chief guest. • Even the attendance is compulsory, the students will produce false medical certificates. Sudha Murthy’s friend says that 15 August and 26 January should be normal working days. According to her they have become a holiday to make merry and not a day to remember the saga of our leaders. Sudha Murthy did not know what to say. • Thus this story talks about a headmaster and a teacher’s experience regarding 15th August. One wants it to be a holiday whereas the other wants it to be a working day. Both of them agree that 15 August is treated like a holiday. These are the two opposite point of views expressed in the story. Summary (cntd)
