PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
Definition and Nature
PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION is that branch of
philosophy that addresses philosophical questions
concerning the nature, aims, and problems of education.
As a branch of practical philosophy, its practitioners
look both inward to the parent discipline of philosophy
and outward to educational practice, as well as to
developmental psychology, cognitive science more
generally, sociology, and other relevant disciplines.
 Philosophy of education can refer to either the academic field
of applied philosophy or to one of any educational philosophies
that promote a specific type or vision of education, and/or
which examine the definition, goals and meaning of education.
 Philosophy of education can also be understood not as an
academic discipline but as a normative educational theory that
unifies pedagogy, curriculum, learning theory, and the purpose
of education and is grounded in specific metaphysical,
epistemological, and axiological assumptions.
• Philosophy of Education serves as the Alpha Omega or
the beginning and the end of teaching and learning.
• Philosophy of Education gives direction and points of
destination to the teachers, administrators, and
supervisors in formulation their educational aims and
objectives to be achieved, in selecting and organizing
subject matters to be taught, in selecting methods of
teaching and techniques to be used and evaluate the
results of teaching and learning.
METAPHYSICS is a branch of philosophy that investigates
principles of reality transcending those of any particular
science. It is concerned with explaining the fundamental
nature of being and the world. It is the study of the nature
of things.
 Metaphysicians ask what kind of things exist, and what
they are like. They reason about such things as whether
or not people have free will, in what sense abstract
objects can be said to exist, and how it is that brains are
able to generate minds.
NATURE OF PHILOSOPHY OF
EDUCATION
AXIOLOGY is the branch of philosophical enquiry that
explores. It is a philosophy that focuses on values. Axiology is
primarily concerned with two kinds of values - ethics and
aesthetics.
 Aesthetics is the study of basic philosophical questions about art
and beauty. Sometimes philosophy of art is used to describe only
questions about art with "aesthetics" the more general term.
Likewise "aesthetics" sometimes applied even more broadly
than to "philosophy of beauty": to the "sublime," to humour, to
the frightening--to any of the responses we might expect works
of art or entertainment to elicit.
 Ethics: the study of what makes actions right or wrong, and of
how theories of right action can be applied to special moral
problems. Sub disciplines include meta-ethics, value theory,
theory of conduct, and applied ethics.
EPISTEMOLOGY is the branch of philosophy concerned with
knowledge. It is concerned with knowledge and can most simply be
described as interrogating how and why we consider something
‘knowledge’. It focuses on the nature and scope of knowledge and
justified belief.
 PHILOSOPHY comes from a two Greek words “philia”
which means “love” and “sophia” which translates
“wisdom”. Therefore, Philosophy is literally the love
of wisdom.
 It is the study of general and fundamental problems
(existence, knowledge, values, reasons, mind and
language) with critical, radical, and systematic
approach and relies on rational argument.
PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATION
 EDUCATION is derived from educare (Latin) “bring
up”, which is related to educere “bring out”, “bring
forth what is within”, “bring out potential”
and educere, “to lead”.
PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATION
According to:
1. Socrates:
“Education means the bringing out of the ideas of
universal validity which are latent in the mind of every man”.
2. Plato:
“Education is the capacity to feel pleasure and pain at
the right moment. It develops in the body and in the soul of
the pupil all the beauty and all the perfection which he is
capable of.”
WESTERN PHILOSOPHERS DEFINED
EDUCATION
3. Aristotle:
“Education is the creation of a sound mind in a sound
body. It develops man’s faculty, especially his mind so that he
may be able to enjoy the contemplation of supreme truth,
goodness and beauty of which perfect happiness essentially
consists.
4. Rousseau:
“Education of man commences at his birth; before he
can speak, before he can understand he is already instructed.
Experience is the forerunner of the perfect”.
5. Herbert Spencer:
“Education is complete living”.
