Unit Abstract
The overview of my lesson is statistics, but I will be using game show games
to teach it. My lessons will cover theoretical probability, experimental probability,
binomial distribution, normal distribution, group work involving the game shows
we will be dealing with, therefore exploring mean, variance, standard deviation,
how to identify when to use what method and what each of definitions mean in a
given problem, and finally we will play the games that we research. Also students
will have to create a blogger and post each night summarizing what they learned in
class for the respective days.
Day one is a review about topics that they were supposed to have had in
middle school; from this we will find the mean, variance, and standard deviation of
the experimental probability. Definitions of terms will be available on a podcast.
Day two will be about something more complicated, the binomial
distribution. We will talk about how the binomial distribution stands for getting a
number of successes within a number of trials and how the mean, variance, and
standard deviation apply to that. Also there is an application question discussion on
my wikispace.
Day three is for the students to learn about the game shows that we will be
talking about. They will be grouped, assigned a specific game from a game show, and
create a presentation based on their findings and present it to the class. They will
collaborate using Zello.
Day four is all about finding the mathematics behind their game. Once they
do this, they will create a faux twitter based on their respective hosts from their
game show and ask questions based on their game in 140 characters or less.

Day five is like Cinco de Mayo in a Spanish class, but with a requirement at
the end. There will be stations set up with each game and the mathematics required
in order to optimize the students’ “earnings.”
