Unit 40 Speech Packages Production Task 1
Sounds Great! Part 1
Task 1a Case Study
A speech package is a factual pre-recorded component of a radio programme. Its main purpose is
to provide listeners with information about a certain topic.
Speech Package 1 http://bbc.in/291y1bF
Radio Station: BBC Radio 3
Time of day: Thursday 16th June 2016 at 5.06pm to 5.13pm
Name of Programme: In Tune Highlights broadcast from 4.30pm to 6.30pm
Purpose of speech package: To inform people about the new Tate Gallery extension and to
entertain them with the sounds of the new instruments there.
Programme genre: Factual
Sub-genre: Arts, Culture and the Media
Target Audience: Nationwide male and females of white origin and all ages in
ABC1 socio-economics groups that like Classical, Jazz music,
World music and Drama
Analysis of the content: Georgia Mann visits the new Tate Modern and gives a quick
history of the building and describes the new extension before
talking about ‘South Tank’, a dedicated space to live and
performance art. She interview Tarek Atoui, an exhibitor for
three weeks with ‘The Reverse Collection’. He shall be
improvising music with ten instruments.
The interview is formal as it follows a clear structure of history of
the building, music demonstration, interviewee, music
demonstration then a summary to finish. She speaks casually,
her voice is soft and light-hearted but her pitch is high, as the
topic of playing unusual instruments is fun to see and hear. She
uses proper use of grammar and is clearly spoken as she
pronounces all her words properly. She doesn’t seem to have
any noticeable accent or dialect because she hasn’t used any
words that certain areas would use, as she has stuck to formal
language. Although on location, the sound quality is very good
with no interference or poor audio. She always appears
interested in the topic and gives the right mix of history, new
information and interviewee time, but prompts where necessary.
She is also good at building up the story so that by the time she
conducts her interview, the listener is already interested in what
the interviewee has to say. The whole interview is calm and
evenly paced and does not appear rushed even though lots of
information is provided within seven minutes. She asks the
correct questions in order to get the best out of the interviewee
and seems interested when she is listening to them. Overall, it is
an educational and entertaining piece, this is emphasised by
fading out and returning to the studio at the end with the sound
of the instruments.
Speech Package 2 http://bbc.in/296TUbS
Radio Station: BBC Radio 5 Live
Time of day: Monday 13th June 2016 – lunchtime
Name of Programme: 5 Live Consumer Team with Martin Lewis – lunchtime show
Purpose of speech package: To inform people about problems Vodafone customers have
been having and to educate people on how to rectify them.
Programme genre: News
Sub-genre: N/A
Target Audience: Nationwide, male and females of all ages and all ethnicity within
the CD socio-economic groups that like listening to live news
and sport. But I would imagine this to be more popular with
males due to the sport coverage. Also because it’s complete
talking I would image over 45’s to be more interested in this
station as under 45’s would be bored.
Analysis of the content: Adrian Chiles interviews Martin Lewis in the studio on the
problems that customers have been having with their bills since
Vodafone moved to a new IT billing and service system.
The interview is informal and the style is in-depth reporting.
Adrian is clearly spoken, sometimes abrupt and his pitch is high
and his voice is loud, although he does have a smooth texture to
his voice. He does however make the odd mistake by rushing
his words and ends up mispronouncing a word. Martin, the
interviewee and the phone callers are serious about the topic
and very informative although Martin was very patronising on air
and towards the caller by talking slowly and using easier and
simpler words as though more complex words would be too
difficult for the listener. Martin’s theme tune at the beginning is
very jokey which counteracts the topic. Martin does want to help
the listeners overcome the situations they are in, as he does
give advice, even though it is scripted. Adrian makes jokes prior
to and in the interview to make it more light-hearted as talking
about finance for thirty minutes could be perceived as boring to
listeners. I feel though to joke around makes him not interested
in the topic and less sincere. He also forgets what he is saying
and then repeats himself again halfway through a sentence,
which shows a disinterest and lack of preparation in the topic.
He counteracts this and takes the spotlight off him by having
other guest speakers, besides Martin talking about the same
issue, but from another company to give a different perspective.
He also has text, internet and phone interaction with his
audience to lighten the topic and to involve others in the topic of
conversation.
Speech Package 3 http://bbc.in/1MDlk6w
Radio Station: BBC Radio York
Time of day: Sunday 26th June 2016 at 6.06pm to 6.12pm
Name of Programme: Yorkshire Farming broadcast from 6pm to 7pm
Purpose of speech package: To educate people on how to produce and maintain good
grasslands.
Programme genre: Factual
Sub-genre: Science and Nature
Target Audience: This would be suited to both male and female viewers, aged 45
– 64 years old that are white, in the regional area and ABC1
socio-economics groups that like listening to talks on the
countryside and farming.
Analysis of the content: Gareth Barlow interviews Dr Liz Jennifer over the phone, talking
about her research on grass varieties and how to produce and
maintain the best grasslands. If left, grass produces 4 tonnes of
dry matter per year, but well maintained grass produces 12
tonnes of dry matter per year. She encourages looking at
different grass varieties and using Nitration or clover to fertilise
the grass for the best produce and quality.
The interview is very informal, almost like talking to a friend on
the phone but still professional. Although Dr Jennifer is on a
landline, it is very clear and crisp and it sounds like she is in the
studio. Gareth speaks very clearly and has a soft, smooth voice
that draws you into the conversation. He seems interested in the
topic and listens when the interviewee is talking. He seems
prepared and well organised as he uses a good choice of
questions to establish the key facts about the topic and he is
aware of what questions his listeners would ask, as he is a
farmer himself. He has a good way of prompting the interviewee
to highlight particular areas of the topic to find out more
information for the viewer. He is also good at recapping and
summing up what the six minute interview was about. Overall,
the interview is very informative and educational and gives key
facts about farming and how to promote healthy grass.
Speech Package 4 http://bbc.in/28L8Gc3
Radio Station: BBC Radio 4
Time of day: Monday 27th June 2016 from 1.45 pm to 2pm
Name of Programme: Voices of the First World War
Purpose of speech package: To educate and inform people on life as a French soldier in the
Battle of Verdun
Programme genre: Factual
Sub-genre: Life Stories
Target Audience: I would imagine this to be mostly males of all ages, nationwide
that are interested in high talk content and their history of WW1.
Because this is specifically talking about French soldiers, I think
the age group would be over 50’s, white and in ABC1 socio-
economics groups.
Analysis of the content: Dan Snow listens to the experiences of French soldiers who
fought at the Battle of Verdun in 1916 through interviews
recorded in 1964.
The interview is formal, serious and unrushed due to the topic
content. Dan gives a brief introduction to the topic and then
different soldier’s voices are heard talking about that topic and
re-living their experience of the war. Dan has a strong, sincere,
smooth voice with an even tone and his is the only voice heard,
before short pauses, then the soldier’s voices are heard talking.
The atmosphere is very sombre and one of reflection. A few key
topics were talked about to emphasise the bad conditions the
soldiers had to endure for months, the fact that they didn’t want
to fight but felt like they had no choice and the way they spoke
about their memories in horror. At the end of the interview the
viewers heard one of the French soldiers saying how awful it
was. This interview was informative, educational and due to the
soldiers talking about the horrible conditions of the war, it was
emotional too.
Task1b Summary (549 words – 10% leeway)
I choose four different speech packages discussing art, finance, farming and war. They all had
different methods of obtaining information; one was on-location, second was in the studio, third
was over the phone and the fourth was pre-recorded and collected from archives. Package one
was formal and three was informal, but they both followed a detailed structure and style that was
thorough and well researched by following a set template of history of topic, fun element,
interviewer talking to interviewee, another fun element and then the interviewer summarised the
whole topic to finish. The fun elements used in package one was a demonstration of improvised
music on an instrument and in package three; if you use fertiliser, it can produce three times more
grass. Both packages had researched information about the history; for example in package one
Georgia said about the Tate extension “once was a PowerStation…is ten stories…” which shows
she was interested and dedicated in her job to research her topic prior to the interview with Tarek.
Speech package two interviews seemed unrehearsed, informal in style and Adrian; the interviewer
didn’t seem interested in the topic matter. He also took a backseat and let Martin, the interviewee
talk throughout. For example, Adrian’s opening line was “Well, Martin what have we got today?”
which meant Martin lead the whole interview and introduced the topic. This to me confirms that
Adrian was not interested in the subject matter because he didn’t really ask any questions or get
involved, except to joke around. For example, when he asked viewers to send in questions and he
gave the radio’s contact details; he said “send in your general questions to…no disclaimers, no
comparison sites available…” This was said really fast and jokingly to music, which made Martin
laugh. Also the theme tune before Martin’s interview was comical and didn’t fit with the serious
theme of finance. A more serious tune and serious tone of voice would have been better but I
understand they are trying to make it less serious, to avoid being too heavy and boring for the
listeners.
Package four was formal like one, but because it was about soldiers experiences at war, it made it
serious. In contrast package one was a light-hearted subject talking about unusual music
instruments. Package four was taken from archives, then the interviewer introduced each part of
the material before playing it too the listeners, whereas the other three all had interviews.
Packages one and two would appeal to both sexes nationwide, with an interest in the topic.
However package three, was a concise topic about farming and would only be interested to a
niche market of male and female farmers/environmentalists in the regional area of Yorkshire, 45 to
64, as older people listen to a local radio. Package four talked about a specific area of WW1 which
would be suited to males nationwide, over 50, as radio four is designated to the older person. If it
was meant for a younger generation then it would be on radio one. The time of 1.45pm to 2pm,
also confirms that older people are more likely to tune in as they have risen, eaten and then turn
on the radio, whereas younger people are at work or college and less likely to listen at this time.

Unit 40 Speech Packages Production Part 1

  • 1. Unit 40 Speech Packages Production Task 1 Sounds Great! Part 1 Task 1a Case Study A speech package is a factual pre-recorded component of a radio programme. Its main purpose is to provide listeners with information about a certain topic. Speech Package 1 http://bbc.in/291y1bF Radio Station: BBC Radio 3 Time of day: Thursday 16th June 2016 at 5.06pm to 5.13pm Name of Programme: In Tune Highlights broadcast from 4.30pm to 6.30pm Purpose of speech package: To inform people about the new Tate Gallery extension and to entertain them with the sounds of the new instruments there. Programme genre: Factual Sub-genre: Arts, Culture and the Media Target Audience: Nationwide male and females of white origin and all ages in ABC1 socio-economics groups that like Classical, Jazz music, World music and Drama Analysis of the content: Georgia Mann visits the new Tate Modern and gives a quick history of the building and describes the new extension before talking about ‘South Tank’, a dedicated space to live and performance art. She interview Tarek Atoui, an exhibitor for three weeks with ‘The Reverse Collection’. He shall be improvising music with ten instruments. The interview is formal as it follows a clear structure of history of the building, music demonstration, interviewee, music demonstration then a summary to finish. She speaks casually, her voice is soft and light-hearted but her pitch is high, as the topic of playing unusual instruments is fun to see and hear. She uses proper use of grammar and is clearly spoken as she pronounces all her words properly. She doesn’t seem to have any noticeable accent or dialect because she hasn’t used any words that certain areas would use, as she has stuck to formal language. Although on location, the sound quality is very good
  • 2. with no interference or poor audio. She always appears interested in the topic and gives the right mix of history, new information and interviewee time, but prompts where necessary. She is also good at building up the story so that by the time she conducts her interview, the listener is already interested in what the interviewee has to say. The whole interview is calm and evenly paced and does not appear rushed even though lots of information is provided within seven minutes. She asks the correct questions in order to get the best out of the interviewee and seems interested when she is listening to them. Overall, it is an educational and entertaining piece, this is emphasised by fading out and returning to the studio at the end with the sound of the instruments. Speech Package 2 http://bbc.in/296TUbS Radio Station: BBC Radio 5 Live Time of day: Monday 13th June 2016 – lunchtime Name of Programme: 5 Live Consumer Team with Martin Lewis – lunchtime show Purpose of speech package: To inform people about problems Vodafone customers have been having and to educate people on how to rectify them. Programme genre: News Sub-genre: N/A Target Audience: Nationwide, male and females of all ages and all ethnicity within the CD socio-economic groups that like listening to live news and sport. But I would imagine this to be more popular with males due to the sport coverage. Also because it’s complete talking I would image over 45’s to be more interested in this station as under 45’s would be bored. Analysis of the content: Adrian Chiles interviews Martin Lewis in the studio on the problems that customers have been having with their bills since Vodafone moved to a new IT billing and service system.
  • 3. The interview is informal and the style is in-depth reporting. Adrian is clearly spoken, sometimes abrupt and his pitch is high and his voice is loud, although he does have a smooth texture to his voice. He does however make the odd mistake by rushing his words and ends up mispronouncing a word. Martin, the interviewee and the phone callers are serious about the topic and very informative although Martin was very patronising on air and towards the caller by talking slowly and using easier and simpler words as though more complex words would be too difficult for the listener. Martin’s theme tune at the beginning is very jokey which counteracts the topic. Martin does want to help the listeners overcome the situations they are in, as he does give advice, even though it is scripted. Adrian makes jokes prior to and in the interview to make it more light-hearted as talking about finance for thirty minutes could be perceived as boring to listeners. I feel though to joke around makes him not interested in the topic and less sincere. He also forgets what he is saying and then repeats himself again halfway through a sentence, which shows a disinterest and lack of preparation in the topic. He counteracts this and takes the spotlight off him by having other guest speakers, besides Martin talking about the same issue, but from another company to give a different perspective. He also has text, internet and phone interaction with his audience to lighten the topic and to involve others in the topic of conversation. Speech Package 3 http://bbc.in/1MDlk6w Radio Station: BBC Radio York Time of day: Sunday 26th June 2016 at 6.06pm to 6.12pm Name of Programme: Yorkshire Farming broadcast from 6pm to 7pm Purpose of speech package: To educate people on how to produce and maintain good grasslands. Programme genre: Factual Sub-genre: Science and Nature
  • 4. Target Audience: This would be suited to both male and female viewers, aged 45 – 64 years old that are white, in the regional area and ABC1 socio-economics groups that like listening to talks on the countryside and farming. Analysis of the content: Gareth Barlow interviews Dr Liz Jennifer over the phone, talking about her research on grass varieties and how to produce and maintain the best grasslands. If left, grass produces 4 tonnes of dry matter per year, but well maintained grass produces 12 tonnes of dry matter per year. She encourages looking at different grass varieties and using Nitration or clover to fertilise the grass for the best produce and quality. The interview is very informal, almost like talking to a friend on the phone but still professional. Although Dr Jennifer is on a landline, it is very clear and crisp and it sounds like she is in the studio. Gareth speaks very clearly and has a soft, smooth voice that draws you into the conversation. He seems interested in the topic and listens when the interviewee is talking. He seems prepared and well organised as he uses a good choice of questions to establish the key facts about the topic and he is aware of what questions his listeners would ask, as he is a farmer himself. He has a good way of prompting the interviewee to highlight particular areas of the topic to find out more information for the viewer. He is also good at recapping and summing up what the six minute interview was about. Overall, the interview is very informative and educational and gives key facts about farming and how to promote healthy grass. Speech Package 4 http://bbc.in/28L8Gc3 Radio Station: BBC Radio 4 Time of day: Monday 27th June 2016 from 1.45 pm to 2pm Name of Programme: Voices of the First World War Purpose of speech package: To educate and inform people on life as a French soldier in the Battle of Verdun
  • 5. Programme genre: Factual Sub-genre: Life Stories Target Audience: I would imagine this to be mostly males of all ages, nationwide that are interested in high talk content and their history of WW1. Because this is specifically talking about French soldiers, I think the age group would be over 50’s, white and in ABC1 socio- economics groups. Analysis of the content: Dan Snow listens to the experiences of French soldiers who fought at the Battle of Verdun in 1916 through interviews recorded in 1964. The interview is formal, serious and unrushed due to the topic content. Dan gives a brief introduction to the topic and then different soldier’s voices are heard talking about that topic and re-living their experience of the war. Dan has a strong, sincere, smooth voice with an even tone and his is the only voice heard, before short pauses, then the soldier’s voices are heard talking. The atmosphere is very sombre and one of reflection. A few key topics were talked about to emphasise the bad conditions the soldiers had to endure for months, the fact that they didn’t want to fight but felt like they had no choice and the way they spoke about their memories in horror. At the end of the interview the viewers heard one of the French soldiers saying how awful it was. This interview was informative, educational and due to the soldiers talking about the horrible conditions of the war, it was emotional too. Task1b Summary (549 words – 10% leeway) I choose four different speech packages discussing art, finance, farming and war. They all had different methods of obtaining information; one was on-location, second was in the studio, third was over the phone and the fourth was pre-recorded and collected from archives. Package one was formal and three was informal, but they both followed a detailed structure and style that was thorough and well researched by following a set template of history of topic, fun element, interviewer talking to interviewee, another fun element and then the interviewer summarised the whole topic to finish. The fun elements used in package one was a demonstration of improvised music on an instrument and in package three; if you use fertiliser, it can produce three times more
  • 6. grass. Both packages had researched information about the history; for example in package one Georgia said about the Tate extension “once was a PowerStation…is ten stories…” which shows she was interested and dedicated in her job to research her topic prior to the interview with Tarek. Speech package two interviews seemed unrehearsed, informal in style and Adrian; the interviewer didn’t seem interested in the topic matter. He also took a backseat and let Martin, the interviewee talk throughout. For example, Adrian’s opening line was “Well, Martin what have we got today?” which meant Martin lead the whole interview and introduced the topic. This to me confirms that Adrian was not interested in the subject matter because he didn’t really ask any questions or get involved, except to joke around. For example, when he asked viewers to send in questions and he gave the radio’s contact details; he said “send in your general questions to…no disclaimers, no comparison sites available…” This was said really fast and jokingly to music, which made Martin laugh. Also the theme tune before Martin’s interview was comical and didn’t fit with the serious theme of finance. A more serious tune and serious tone of voice would have been better but I understand they are trying to make it less serious, to avoid being too heavy and boring for the listeners. Package four was formal like one, but because it was about soldiers experiences at war, it made it serious. In contrast package one was a light-hearted subject talking about unusual music instruments. Package four was taken from archives, then the interviewer introduced each part of the material before playing it too the listeners, whereas the other three all had interviews. Packages one and two would appeal to both sexes nationwide, with an interest in the topic. However package three, was a concise topic about farming and would only be interested to a niche market of male and female farmers/environmentalists in the regional area of Yorkshire, 45 to 64, as older people listen to a local radio. Package four talked about a specific area of WW1 which would be suited to males nationwide, over 50, as radio four is designated to the older person. If it was meant for a younger generation then it would be on radio one. The time of 1.45pm to 2pm, also confirms that older people are more likely to tune in as they have risen, eaten and then turn on the radio, whereas younger people are at work or college and less likely to listen at this time.
