Imperialism
Imperialism defined
• Imperialism is a policy of
   extending a country’s power and
   influence through diplomacy, or
   military force.

• Colonialism is the policy or
   practice of acquiring full or
   partial political control over
   another country, occupying it
   with settlers, and exploiting it
   economically.



• Annexation is the act of annexing
   something, esp. territory.
Social Darwinism

• The theory that said that individuals
   are subject to the rights of the
   Darwinian laws of natural selection
   as plants and animals, this theory
   backed up Imperialism,
   conservatism, and racism.

• If there someone were to take over
   the country by a mutual diplomacy
   then They would have a right in
   Imperialism, I believe they used
   darwinism in the Diplomatic way to
   have the leaders of that country to
   come to their agreement.
“White Mans Burden”


• The “White Man’s Burden,” is the
   supposed responsibility that a white
   race to provide care for their non-
   white subjects. It was a poem written
   by Kipling Hymn to U.S. Imperialism.
Racism and missionary
       impulse
•    Racism: Prejudice, discrimination,
    and directed against someone of a
    race based on such a belief.

• A policy for authority in which they
    restrict the freedom and
    responsibilities of those
    subordinate to them, in the
    subordinates supposed best
    interest. This could be racist if it
    were to be exemplified by a white
    master and a black save, etc.

• Missionaries could of used
    paternalism in the way that saying
    that it was in their best interest to
    join God and go to heaven, in that
    way it was paternalism.
The scramble for Africa
• The scramble for Africa occurred
   between the 1880’s- 1914.

• The scramble was a process of
   invasion, attack, and occupation by
   European powers.

• The Berlin conference allowed
   colonization and trade in Africa, for
   European powers.

• Ethiopia and Liberia were the only
   two countries that were not
   colonized in Africa during the
   scramble.
Nationalism


• Nationalism is the
  advocacy of political
  independence for a
  particular country.
Colonized VS. the
           colonizers
• A reason why a
   industrialized country would
   take over another one, is
   probably they needed to
   expand, and they new they
   could take them over do to
   the opponents lack of
   technology.

• The reaction of the victims I
   could assume is the feeling of
   being overwhelmed by the
   enemy.
