Between the 8th-15th May 2014 we collected a total of 26 responses from our survey. The fact we only have 26 responses does not represent the wider population- it’s not a bigger enough sample.
We intended for the questionnaire to be answered by a wide range of people of all ages, however due to circumstances 82% of our responses were from 15-24 year olds, making the overall results slightly biased. Only 5 of the respondents were over the age 24. It does not give us enough insight into the views and opinions of anyone over the age of 24.
By finding out what time of day most people sit down to watch TV, it allows us to determine when would be best to air the show- we want as large of an audience as possible. 18 of the 26 respondents watch TV between the hours of 8pm-11pm (Late Evening), of those 23, 14 where aged 15-24. Early Evening came in as the second most popular time of day to watch TV. This means there is the possibility for a new TV show in that time gap- there obviously aren’t any programmes during that broadcasting time that are as popular as late evening TV shows.
Question number three supports our finding further more- late evening is when the most people will sit down to watch TV and also when the highest rated TV shows are aired. In conclusion to this it, further supports the theory that there may be a gap in the early evening slot for a new ‘good’ show.
Question number four does support us as Crime dramas- one of the main genres of our show (along with fantasy) is ranked the highest of all of the available choices. From our survey you can see that Sports shows are the lowest ranked, which suggests there is a gap in the market for them.
For question five we can see that what channels people like to watch the most. Among the top 5 are International channels (FOX, 5 USA) and English channels BBC1, ITV1 and E4. BBC 1 and ITV 1 play shows which we researched and that fit into our genre, For example: Ashes to Ashes, Doctor Who. The channel we suggested for our show to be broadcast on was E4, the third highest ranked television station in our survey. This shows that the channel is very popular with six of our survey respondents ranking it as their favourite channel.
Our show is multi-genre and aims to appeal to all ages. The most prominent genres are Crime Drama and SciFi. The former ranked highest of what people were most likely to watch with their family while the latter was further down the rankings, with only 10 people selecting this choice. However, I think this shows that there is a possibility for out show to appeal to both ages; there is something for everyone.
On question seven we can see some of the options of the people answering our survey . We asked them if they would like a new crime drama on the air. 13 people said they would, while 12 people said no and 1 person did not answer. This shows people have a mixed opinion regarding the possibility of a new show. However, some people who did say yes listed their reasons as being ‘if it is different’ or ‘has a uniqueness’ meaning they want something unique which our show has the possibility of doing so. There is also the possibility that nobody answered truthfully due to the fact they had to answer other survey and were rushing through it.
Of the 26 people that answered our survey only 20 responded to question number 8. We collected a variety of results- each of the respondents wanted to see a different aspect added to crime dramas. One thing that crept up in a few of the answer was better plot twists- so the murderer having the upper hand. They also want a younger female lead role rather than a male or older women- this is a positive result for us, since we were intending on using male lead. A few of the responses were not serious, so there's the possibility of our results being unreliable.
This question allowed us to determine peoples viewpoints on our chosen genre for our TV show. On average we scored a 3 out of 5. Answers were rather mixed with 23% giving us a two and only 11% a 1. 68% of the respondents gave us a 3 or more which is a positive, however the amount of people that gave us a 5 was also quite high at 19%.
It allows us to determine whether people like dramas set in different periods since our TV show will include that element. Answers were positive with nearly 60% of all respondents answering with either “They’re OK” or “They’re Amazing”.
The results from our survey were generally mixed, with people liking some aspects of our show and others not so much. We found that while people believe that there is a gap in the market for a crime drama with uniqueness, they do not generally like the idea of a sci-fi crime drama. However, it must be noted that the findings could possibly be bias, due to the fact that over 80% of our respondents were from the 15-24 age range. We may need to improve aspects of our show and add things that appeal to teenagers and young adults, to help it improve in this market.
