From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

- 2. Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage Primary Primary research is the research you generate by asking questions, conducting trials and collating results. Focuses on both qualitative and quantitative issues Compared to secondary research, primary data may be very expensive. Costs can be incurred in producing the paper for questionnaires or the equipment for an experiment of some thing like that. Secondary Secondary research is based on the findings from other people's research. It involves the gathering of the results of other's research from books, reports or the Internet. Someone else has already collected the data, huge savings in time It may not answer the researcher’s specific research questions or contain specific information that the researcher would like to have Quantitative Quantitative research is used to measure the problem by way of creating statistical data or data that can be transformed into useable figures. Easier to compile the data onto a chart or graph because of the numbers that are made available More costly than using qualitative research. Qualitative Qualitative research on the other hand is more concerned with opinions and feelings. The data does not necessarily end up as a set of numbers that can be analysed. It looks at the total picture rather than the separate components. With qualitative research it will be easier to gain a better understanding of the target audience market because the types of questions that are asked It's not a research method that allows for statistical data but that can easily be overcome by adding in another research method
- 3. Research Methods For my unit 18 project I needed to research certain subjects. First I used the power of the internet for my secondary research to find thing such as : finding out a name for my product that is suitable and without running into any copyright issues ; secondly any new flavours or any new flavour combinations that we could incorporate into the chewing gum to make it stand out with all the competition out there.The internet also helped to decide where to put my advertisements such as a bus, magazine or a TV ad.
- 4. For unit 18 I had to research many things. So remembering all the information and websites was quite hard, so collating it all was key. First all the useful websites I wrote down on a piece of scrap paper so I wouldn’t forget them. Secondly I saved pictures and photos of existing chewing gum brands and flavours to build a wider knowledge of what has already been created and what hasn’t been done, to make the our gum the best it can be! Collating and storing information

First I would use primary research to create as survey or a questionnaire about what people like about realityTV shows and why they like them.This may be quite a long survey that people would not really like to do in their spare time so I would ask friends and family members to fill it out. Further more I would use the results from the primary research to make Quantitative data that I would turn into a graph or a table. Lastly the use of the internet in secondary research would help me see what are the most viewed TV reality shows and why they are. So I can bear that in mind when thinking of what the new series is going to be about. Why I might use the four methods irl
