Modern slavery generates $9 billion in annual revenue and impacts over 27 million slaves. Students in years 9 and 10 are encouraged to raise awareness of modern slavery and take responsible action to help end it through exploring the issue in international student teams, producing films telling slaves' stories, and brainstorming and implementing the best local and global ideas for action. They will use online collaboration tools to coordinate their efforts in May or September 2011.

The photostory highlights various sign and label techniques in the landscape, and invites the viewer to consider questions regarding sustainability, and the drama (intentional or not) that can be created with dialog between objects, signs and the viewer.

Tree Study A Catalyst for Stewardship
This document summarizes a tree study project conducted by the Virginia Association of Science Teachers with Mary Van Dyke and Luzdary Chamorro in 2013. Over the course of 3 class sessions, students identified and analyzed local trees, assessing their health and calculating their economic and environmental benefits using i-Tree Design software. Students determined the trees' value in reducing stormwater runoff, sequestering carbon dioxide, and providing habitat. How Much is That Tree is a series of experiential projects for STEM multidisciplinary learning on the theme of valuing trees and their benefits to the ecosystem. 2nd to 5th graders (and older students) collect simple data from local (or imagined) trees and enter into the iTree calculator to obtain the dollar value of the trees contribution to the ecosystem in terms of stormwater reduction, air quality improvement, CO2 sequestration and potential energy reduction to neighboring buildings. This study is set in context with some short experiential exercises: draw My Favorite Tree, Goods from the Woods, Tree Functions and Tree Identification. Students can then continue the tree theme with STEM extensions such as modelling trees and service-based learning - such as setting up a tree nursery or caring for trees in a schoolyard.

Malaria update
Malaria remains a major global health problem, infecting over 240 million people annually and killing over 1 million, mostly children in Africa. It is caused by Plasmodium parasites and transmitted via mosquito bites. Diagnosis and treatment of both uncomplicated and severe malaria is discussed. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are the recommended treatments. For severe malaria, artesunate is the treatment of choice due to its superiority over quinine in clinical trials. Malaria control efforts aim to expand access to effective prevention and treatment.
Preparation of blood films for malaria parasites
This document provides instructions for preparing blood films for malaria parasite detection. It describes making both a thick blood smear from a fingerprick to see if parasites are present and a thin blood smear to identify the Plasmodium species. Proper technique and labeling are emphasized, including using gloves, cleaning the finger, making slides of the right thickness, and allowing complete drying. Venous blood can also be used if slides are prepared within 2 hours to avoid changes affecting identification.

Scenes will focus on racial discrimination and allow audience members to improvise solutions by replacing actors on stage. The goal is to raise awareness of how racism exists today and give a voice to the voiceless by exploring issues in exciting ways. An intercultural festival and photo exhibition will further educate about racism over centuries and how to build a better future of equality and hope for all.
