Climate change and institutional investors: not a well-established linkNadia Ameli
We analyse the potential reasons why institutional investors are not conducting as much low-carbon investment as they otherwise might. In particular, we explore, through in-depth interviews with institutional investors and other experts, the perceived influencing factors determining the level of such investment by pension funds and insurance companies in the EU and US, alongside, measures that may be taken to incentivise and facilitate an increasing allocation of their AUM to low-carbon assets.

Finance is vital for the green energy transition, but access to low cost finance is uneven as the cost of capital differs substantially between regions. This study shows how modelled decarbonisation pathways for developing economies are disproportionately impacted by different weighted average cost of capital (WACC) assumptions. For example, representing regionally-specific WACC values indicates 35% lower green electricity production in Africa for a cost-optimal 2 °C pathway than when regional considerations are ignored. Moreover, policy interventions lowering WACC values for low-carbon and high-carbon technologies by 2050 would allow Africa to reach net-zero emissions approximately 10 years earlier than when the cost of capital reduction is not considered. A climate investment trap arises for developing economies when climate-related investments remain chronically insufficient. Current finance frameworks present barriers to these finance flows and radical changes are needed so that capital is more equitably distributed.

This OECD Global Forum on Environment dedicated on "Mainstreaming Gender and Empowering Women for Environmental Sustainability" took place on the 5th and 6th March 2020. Over two days, participants discussed the gender – environmental sustainability nexus, identifying and proposing ways to capitalise on synergies between environmental policies and economic and social goals, such as achieving gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.
The Global Forum covered the following issues:
• Integrating gender into environmental policies: Data and evidence challenges;
• Differentiated environmental impacts on women’s and men’s health and well-being;
• Sustainable and gender-inclusive urbanisation, settlements and transport infrastructure;
• Gender-specific consumption patterns, behavioural insights, and circular economy;
• Biodiversity, agriculture, fisheries: changing economic opportunities for women and men;
• Greening energy and ensuring a just transition for men and women;
• Environmental justice and empowering women and youth.

GDP growth for Canada has been bumped up for 2017 and 2018. It should be known that for the past six months or so GDP rates continue to get adjusted. The concerns is that slowdown is showing in key areas like retail spending, building permits, manufacturing sales and exports.

Lessons from renewable energy laws - how do countries legislate to support re...Leonardo ENERGY
With the increasing globalisation of the market for renewable energy technologies, it might be expected that this would also lead to national renewable energy laws becoming more similar. Yet, outside of the European Union this has not happened. Drawing from her study of every country in the world’s renewable energy laws, Associate Professor Crossley will explore how countries compete to attract investment via their legislation to support renewables to meet the needs of their domestic consumers and indigenous renewable energy sources. From the support of peat in Sweden, to local content clauses in China, and the impact of the bushfires in Australia, this webinar will examine the competing market drivers impacting the energy transition around the world.
A climate investment trap in developing countries: higher cost of capital, investment suitability and path dependency perpetuate inequity in low-carbon finance

9/10 SAT 8:30 | Can Planners Create Jobs? - Planning & Econ. Dev. 4APA Florida
Charles Pattison
As of the Spring of 2011 unemployment in Florida is hovering around 12%. Many people are out of work but what can planners do to help spur the state’s economy? Even Governor Scott has
placed economic development as the foundation of his governorship with his 777 Plan. This panel will consider some of the ways that planners can help in economic development efforts. The panel will explore the varied ways planning is intersecting
economic development in Florida in the private sector, in the environmental community and on the state and local levels.
Kateri Callahan joined Israeli mayors and senior representatives from local Tel Aviv authorities and agencies to discuss the challenges and potential for Israeli cities in deploying energy efficiency at scale. Showcasing success stories and case studies from the U.S. and around the world, Callahan demonstrated the economic, environmental, and security benefits of advancing programs, technologies, funding and infrastructure that promote efficient energy use.
