The document discusses how technology is changing exponentially while people think linearly, resulting in massive changes across every industry and country in the last 3 years. It questions whether IT leaders are change drivers or order takers, noting many businesses still operate 1600s-era models. Some organizations, however, are leveraging exponential changes to create new cloud-based, mobile, automated, and inexpensive platforms that are transforming the world. The document predicts that computing, storage, and bandwidth will become practically free in the future.
People are consuming information at unprecedented rates across many platforms like social media, video sharing, coding, gaming, apps, and search. This hyper-connected world requires constantly studying, working smarter, and adapting faster than before. Simply being average is no longer enough to earn a comparable living. Meanwhile, incomes in the U.S. have stagnated while costs of tuition, living expenses, and inequality have grown significantly. More workers are becoming freelancers and defining success for themselves in this changing environment.
In the last decade, technologies like adaptive learning, smartphones, learning analytics, OER, and MOOCs have been chipping away at the corners of traditional education. In the near future we'll be dealing with even more disruptive technologies like bots and artificial intelligence. Technology-enhanced learning is here to stay and it is altering formal education, like it or not. This is a guide to successfully navigating and thriving in this new world and preparing yourself, your students, and your institution for what is to come.
The document discusses the challenges of transitioning to a green economy including obstacles related to ideas, implementation, politics, and international cooperation. It notes the negative externalities of fossil fuel consumption and analyzes potential solutions like a green new deal as well as debates around climate science and pricing carbon. Implementation problems, varying public support across countries, and challenges of past international agreements on climate change are also summarized.

AI and Technological Anxiety: Paranoia , or are the robots out to get us Comm...Structuralpolicyanalysis
This document summarizes a discussion on artificial intelligence and technological anxiety. It begins by outlining two views on AI: 1) that it could boost productivity and living standards, and 2) that it poses a threat by replacing human workers. It then examines the recent productivity slowdown in advanced economies and historical examples of technological anxiety. The document discusses how AI is being applied extensively by Uber and how some jobs like taxi driving have been disrupted. However, it notes that whole jobs will likely not be replaced, just certain tasks, and that new types of jobs will emerge. In closing, it acknowledges that few occupations will be immune to disruption from AI going forward.
The document summarizes key points from a longer presentation on the impacts of automation and emerging technologies. It notes that a study found 47% of jobs are at risk of automation in the next 20 years. It questions whether this means there will be nothing left for humans to do and explores challenges like income inequality that technologies could help address. It also discusses how technologies and economies evolve through "fitness landscapes" and migration to new peaks, and that a successful ecosystem creates opportunity for all.
WTF - Why the Future Is Up to Us - pptx versionTim O'Reilly
This is the talk I gave January 12, 2017 at the G20/OECD Conference on the Digital Future in Berlin. I talk about fitness landscapes as applied to technology and business, the role of unchecked financialization in the state of our politics and economy, and why technology really wants to create jobs, not destroy them. (There is a separate PDF version, but some readers said the notes were too fuzzy to read.)
This document summarizes key points from a discussion on technology and education systems:
1. It outlines how jobs have shifted from agrarian to industrial to more creative/digital work requiring technology skills.
2. It shows graphs depicting changes in work tasks over time and models of learning experiences with technology.
3. It argues that education reform is a complex systems problem involving many stakeholders, and that unlocking technology's potential requires digital/ICT literacy.
Facing the future of technology and learning mizzou jan 2022Maria H. Andersen
The document discusses how technology and the amount of data and information in the world is rapidly changing. It notes that smartphones have transformed how people live and work in just one decade. It also discusses how artificial intelligence and automation may disrupt many jobs and careers. The document argues that curriculum in higher education needs to change and adapt to better prepare students for this changing environment by focusing less on memorization, allowing for more flexible expertise, and enabling students to upgrade their skills more quickly for new careers.
The document discusses how digital technologies are disrupting development in the Digital Age. It notes that technologies like mobile phones, the internet, and social media are reaching people faster than ever before. It also explores how disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and drones are creating new opportunities but also threats. While digital disruption may increase global inequality if not harnessed properly, it can also help achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals through areas like financial inclusion, energy solutions, health solutions, and more. The document emphasizes that countries must invest more in developing their people's skills and capabilities to compete in the future economy and harness digital technologies for sustainable development.
A brochure-style presentation to introduce the big picture vision for R7 Partners, a venture capital firm that finds, funds, and builds early-stage startups with ambitious innovation.
The document discusses several topics related to globalization and a "flat world" including: America needing to produce knowledge workers to succeed; other countries racing to the top not the bottom; potential "races to the bottom" in areas like taxes and regulations; shortages of scientists and engineers in the US; the potential of green energy technology; criticisms of corporate capitalism; and examples of pro- and anti-corporate websites focused on large brands like McDonald's, Starbucks, and Nike.
The document discusses advances in information and communication technology and how they have changed daily life. It covers topics like fifth generation computers in Japan, the impact of the internet and digital technology, global media networks, communication technologies like satellites, and how transport technologies have increased international trade. The combination of information, communication, and transport technologies is also discussed in relation to research methods, online business, mobile technology, and other areas.
1) The document discusses strategies for success in the 4th Industrial Revolution, which is driven by exponential technologies.
2) It argues that the rules of business have changed and companies must make strategic decisions differently and more quickly.
3) The document promotes a CLEVER strategy, focusing on six strategic drivers: Culture, Leadership, Experimentation, Vision, and Resilience.

Facing the Future of Technology and Learning OLC Nov 2020Maria H. Andersen
In the last decade, innovations like adaptive learning, smartphones, learning analytics, OER, and MOOCs have been chipping away at the corners of traditional education. Then came COVID-19, causing a rapid acceleration of the adoption of these kinds of technology and new pedagogies in under a month. The next wave of disruption to higher ed will not come from more technology to incorporate into teaching, but will be caused by the existence of advanced technology in the workforce. The existence of technology like AI will force us to alter the content we teach, how we assess, and how we design programs, modalities, and curriculum in order to stay relevant as educational institutions.

Optimizing Net Interest Margin (NIM) in the Financial Sector (With Examples).pdfshruti1menon2
NIM is calculated as the difference between interest income earned and interest expenses paid, divided by interest-earning assets.
Importance: NIM serves as a critical measure of a financial institution's profitability and operational efficiency. It reflects how effectively the institution is utilizing its interest-earning assets to generate income while managing interest costs.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
