Thinking, stress etc •Sleep and awakeness (Naum wa Yagza)----Sleep time, good sleep •Retention and Evacuation (Ehtibas and Estefaragh)….What is to be retained and evacuated from the body.

History of Unani Medicine
The foundation of Eilm-e-Tibb (Present day
Unani Medicine) was laid in 5th Century AD after
integration of different traditional medicine practiced
in different civilization.
A Persian city of Jundi Shahpur was hub of
intellectuals. A school of medicine was established by
Shah of Jundi Shahpur where the books of Egyptian
medicine, Greek medicine, Indian medicine
(Ayurveda), Arabic medicine, Chinese medicine so on
and so forth were translated into Persian language.

The diagnosis and treatment according to Unani System of
Medicine is based on Humoral theory and temperament.
There are four humors in the body:
•Phlegm (Balgham)
•Yellow Bile (Safra)
•Blood (Dham)
•Black Bile (Sauda)
Four temperaments are:
•Cold and Wet Phlagmatic (Balghami)
•Cold and Dry Sanguine (Saudavi)
•Hot and Wet Bloody (Dhamvi)
•Hot and Dry Bilious (Safravi)
The diagnosis of disease and the treatment are based on the above
mentioned temperaments. It is according to temperament of disease and
temperament of a person that the drug is selected.

Unani concept of COVID-19
In early stages it is Phlegmatic in nature and the
temperament is Cold and Wet…..
In advanced stage the Phlegm burns (Ehtiraq-e-
Blgham) and due to burning its temperament becomes
Hot and Dry thus tends towards Bilious (Safravi)
temperament.
Accordingly the treatment varies from mild cases
to advanced cases.

Treatment modalities
Based on the temperament, the initial stage of the
disease is having Phelagmatic nature as such the treatment will
comprise of following medicine:
Decoction for Initial phase:
Muleethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra)…Hot and wet
Gawzaban (Borago officinalis)..Temperament is Neutral
Sapistan (Cordia latifolia)….Hot and Dry
Unaab (Zizyphus vulgaris)-----Hot and wet
Laooqi Badam
Immune Boosters like Khameera Marwareed, Habbi Asgand
The treatment as I have already told depends on the severity of the
disease.

During the course of the disease it changes its
temperament. In advanced stages its temperament is Safravi
(Hot and Dry) as such the treatment modalities also change.
The medication in advanced stage:
• Kakda singhi (Pistacia intigerima)----Hot and Dry
• Kaloonji (Nigela sativa)….Hot and Dry
• Tiryaq Wabai
• Antipyretic/Analgesic like Qurse Mubarak
