This was a school, totally destroyed by a single rocket. It wasn’t being used as a school at the time as it is in a front line location but on any map, it showed as a school! It was actually being temporarily used as a hospital. Many died here.
On top of this, restoring or replacing damaged scientific equipment will cost just over $45 million. the National University of Kharkiv recently finished replacing the windows of one of its buildings after they were blown out by shelling, only for another missile to hit and shatter other windows. Note the text books from the school in the video – in Russian, reflective of the focus on the language prior to the invasion.
Despite the war, there has been a school reform going on in Ukraine which started in 2018. This reform reflects a shift in focus and values toward democratic education, representing a definitive break with the Soviet style of teaching. It has been termed the “New Ukrainian School”.
It uses active methods, puts Ukrainian history in its wider context, and promotes civic competences.
