Comparing Poems The Fish And At The Fishhouses
The American poet, Elizabeth Bishop, was a 20th century poet who was highly reputable for
her published work. She was a Pulitzer Prize winner in 1956, and a National Book Award
Winner for Poetry in 1970. She two of many famous poems, are The Fish and At The Fishhouses.
These two poems can be used to analyze her use of free verse and form to construct her poetic
technique. Bishop s poems are descriptive and illustrate reverence for something greater than
herself. Elizabeth Bishop intimately brings readers in by her poetic techniques such as simile,
repetition and alliteration, thus alluding to deeper meanings of knowledge and veneration.
Although The Fish is a free verse, 76 line poem, it has internal form including the use of similes to

Comparing the fish s skin to wallpaper twice emphasizes its importance. The ancient wallpaper,
may correspond to something powerful because it has withstood time. Likewise, once beautiful
and preteen wallpaper might not be the same after ages unless treated with respect. Wallpaper
has a specific link to the interior of a house too. Bishop connects with the house imagery to
strengthen the value of ancient wallpaper, like an object passed down to the next generation, to
the skin of the fish. The last simile Bishop offers compares the fish to an athlete or someone who
