This document is a thesis submitted by Uppu Karthik for the degree of Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras in February 2014. The thesis describes the design, simulation, fabrication and characterization of a compact 2x2 integrated optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer in silicon-on-insulator platform for dense wavelength division multiplexing applications. Key aspects covered include the design of single-mode waveguides and multi-mode interference based power splitters, fabrication using photolithography and reactive ion etching, and experimental characterization showing polarization independent operation over 1520-1600nm with 15dB extinction and 100GHz bandwidth.
