1) Andrew Goodwin analyzed key features of music videos in his book "Dancing in the Distraction Factory". He identified 6 features of music videos and 5 ways to analyze them.
2) The 6 key features of music videos are: demonstrating genre characteristics; relationships between lyrics and visuals and between music and visuals; record label demands like close-ups of artists; references to looking like screens and mirrors; and intertextual references to other media.
3) The 5 aspects for analyzing music videos are: seeing the music itself through its structure and artist's voice; narratives and performances; the importance of the star image; and narratives and performances working together for repeatability and authenticity.

Genre theory aims to categorize texts into types based on common elements. A genre is a category or type of text. Genres are recognized through the repeated use of codes and conventions that audiences associate with that type of text. While genres were once seen as fixed forms, contemporary theory emphasizes that both the forms and functions of genres are dynamic and change over time based on societal and cultural changes. One weakness of genre theory is that it may reduce creativity by forcing works to strictly follow conventions of a genre.
