Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People...
Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People
Puerto Rico . The name immediately brings to mind images of a beautiful lush tropical island of
enchantment. The name Puerto Rico usually does not conjure the image of Taino Indians or
African slaves, yet these populations have great importance in laying the foundation for the notion
of identity of Puerto Ricans. In contemporary debates of Puerto Rican identity, it is essential to
examine the history of the island to determine the effects of Spanish colonialism on Puerto Rican
identity. As he demonstrates in his article Puerto Rico: the Four Storeyed Country , Jose L.
Gonzalez discusses the notion of identity as a series of storeys, one built upon another in order

17). The island s discovery did not lead to a quick occupation, though. Juan Ponce de Leon, in
search of gold, made the first effort to settle on the island in 1508. In the next twenty years, the
Taino population became decimated while forced to labor in prospecting gold, a phase that ended
in this time, succumbing to disease and a breakdown in their social network.
An important implication of this initial occupation of the island by Spaniards is the imposition of
the Spanish language. Because the Taino population could be counted in small amounts and
Spanish had established their presence on the island by instilling their language as the only
accepted language, in the name of Spain, a first storey was constructed in the notion of identity of
the Puerto Rican. The Tainos had been moved out and taken over, the Spanish had moved in and
started to let their culture infiltrate into that of the Taino, and now things were changing.
Because the gold rush on the island lost its surge, the Spanish turned its attention to the agricultural
success they could have with the island. However, as a result of their occupation, they lacked the
labor force to effectively move an agricultural economy. In order to replenish the population and
create a strong labor force, the Spanish took part in what others around Puerto Rico had begun to
do, import cheap labor, namely African slaves. As the profit grew from cash crops sugar emerging

The Mistakes of the Brilliant General, Napoleon Bonaparte...
The assumption held by many that Napoleon Bonaparte was a brilliant general and an exceptional
leader is debatable when the Frenchman s many mistakes are revealed. Bonaparte was born to a
wealthy family with previous political connections (Wilde 1). He entered a military academy at
only nine years old and entered the French Army Artillery Regiment seven years later (Wilde 1). As
Bonaparte moved up in the militaryranks, he made himself known with his political opinions and
his successful leadership of the revolutionaries armed forces (Wilde 1). As he became more
famous, Bonaparte threw open the gates to his path to power. Thus began the era of Napoleon, a
time of absolute power, vast reform, and relentless military invasions led by a... Show more content

His plan backfired, and the French were pinned down in Egypt by the powerful British admiral
Horiato Nelson, which led to Napoleon crawling back to France licking his wounds (McDougal,
584). Due to the public s ignorance towards this defeat, Napoleon s public image vastly
improved, and his gain in power started to lead to totalitarianism. When the Directory began to
lose political popularity with the common folk, Napoleon led an overthrow of the government
(McDougal, 584). The aftermath of the coup seemed to be flawless; peace had come to Europe
for the first time in ten years, and Napoleon, the most powerful public figure in France, could now
focus on re strengthening France (McDougal, 585). However, the countries of Britain, Austria,
and Russia were forming the Second Coalition, an alliance with the intent to stop Napoleon,
behind the scenes of France s post victory glory (McDougal, 585). Napoleon soon held a
plebiscite, or a vote by the people, which made himself emperor and bestowed total power upon
him (McDougal, 585).
As the years passed, Napoleon made many fatal military mistakes that led to the collapse of his
empire and the defiling of the French Revolution s legacy. These mistakes were terminal in three
main campaigns, the Battle of Trafalgar, the Peninsular War, and the invasion attempt on Russia
(Wilde, 2). The battle of Trafalgar was Napoleon s attempt to invade Britain (McDougal, 587).
Napoleon s specialty was land

Hardware Design Practices For Modern Hardware
Hardware is the basis of any computing system and, as such, should be the first part of the system
to consider security. The research presented in Trustworthy Hardware from Untrusted Components
looks at the present state of hardware security, analyzes the vulnerabilities and possible solutions,
and presents an alternative approach to ensure that the end result of the hardware design process
is a secure and trustworthy piece of hardware. There are many factors that contribute to the current
susceptibility of hardware to attacks. Modern hardware design practices incorporate the use of
more third party intellectual property (IP) components, such as USB components. Modern
hardware design practices require that a piece of hardware pass through thousands of engineers in
the stages from design to manufacture. Modern hardware is much more complex than what has
been manufactured in the past. Finally, modern hardware is designed by teams with relatively few
designers for each subcomponent. In an idealistic world, hardware would be designed and
manufactured in a single secure location with trusted personnel handling the process from
inception to manufacture; however, this idea is ineffective and cost prohibitive making it unlikely
to be put into practice. Hardware design follows a very similar process as the software engineering
lifecycle and even has many of the same steps. For instance, the first step in both processes is to
gather the specifications for the requirements. The

Power In Antigone And The Bacchae
Greek dramas often contained a singular view on historical ideas or people. This is demonstrated in
the two Greek tragedies, Antigone by Sophocles and the Bacchae by Euripides V. The tragedy
Antigone, critiques a Kreon who rules with fear and pride and suffers a tremendous tragedy, while
the Bacchae praises Pentheus for attempting to regain control over his chaotic city yet still suffer an
undesirable fate. Both tragedies focus on different aspects of political power. The fashion, in which
both Kreon and Pentheus achieve their title as king, demonstrates the extent of power they both
believe they contain. In Antigone, Kreon manages to claim the throne, amongst the chaos from a
rebel attack. Kreon s succession of the throne through... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With Kreon refusing to provide polyneikes with the proper burial, Kreon refused to provide
Hades of his rightful property. Antigone warns Kreon that his decision of refusing to provide the
burial will result in punishment, Since you, a mere man, imposed them have the force to trample
on the gods unwritten laws (Antigone 490 493). Antigone accuses Kreon, a mere man, of
dishonoring the laws written by the gods. As a result of denying Hades of his rights, Kreon
suffers a fate worse than death. As a payment of withholding the body, Kreon must witness the
death of his only son Haimon and accept the death of Eurydike, his wife. Kreon attempting to
protect his honor from Antigone, results in Kreon losing everything he considers important in his
heart. However, Kreon s lost results in the humbling of his personality. At the end of Antigone, he
admits, A foolish impulsive man who killed you, my son, mindlessly killed you as well, my wife
(Antigone 1500 1502). The gods punishes those who prevent them of their proper rites, and those
who allow their pride to blind their moral judgment. Although Pentheus did not have to experience
the death of everyone he loves, his family ultimately paid a high price for his

Birth Control Is A Powerful Tool
Birth control is a powerful tool. It gives women the power to choose when they are ready to have
a baby, with whom they wish to have it with, and how many children to limit the family to. In the
past, women had no control over childbearing due to many restrictions. With Margaret Sanger s
efforts, birth control awareness became accepted by the people and the legal system, changing the
lives of countless women in their fight towards equal opportunity. She changed the way that
childbearing was viewed in America and paved a road that led to gender equality.
Limited knowledge of contraceptives caused great suffering for women during Margaret Sanger s
childhood. Starting from 1873, a law called the Comstock Act that decreed it illegal to ... Show

This impacted Sanger s life to such a great extent that it put her on the path to becoming a birth
control advocate, fighting for the rights of women.
Margaret Sanger developed an interest in birth control advocacy through her involvement in the
movement for women s rights, dedicating her life in support of contraceptive awareness. In the
early 1900s, women began advocating for greater access to contraception and birth control
information, both to increase women s independence and to decrease unwanted pregnancies and
illegal abortions ( State Abortion Laws ). Sanger joined the movement, becoming a member of
many female rights organizations. As a member of the Socialist Party and a woman s labor
organizer, Sanger met [influential] leader such as Eugene V. Debs, Emma Goldman, and Bill
Haywood of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) . As a result of influence from Goldman
and other radical women, Sanger became convinced that married women could never become equal
without being able to control childbearing (McPherson and Gertle).
The popular women s rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s emphasized reproductive rights as
an essential component of women s liberation that would lead to gender equality. Feminists argued
that only once a woman can control her reproductive lives can she fully participate in society as

Is there any dramatic shift in the ratios worthy of note?
There was not a dramatic shift in the ratios between the years of 1998 to 2000. There was
however a dramatic shift between 2000 and 2001. The ratio of price decreased by more than 50%
along with the stock price even though the book values per share increased.
In Conclusion, looking at the financial statement analysis for Sun Microsystems one can definitely
see the company s strengths and their needs. The balance sheet indicates what the firm owns and
how these assets are financed in the form of liabilities or ownership interest and the statement of
income is the major device for measuring the profitability of a firm over time
Sun Microsystems needs to implement a new plan quickly to save its company from going under
as its stockholders equity continues to decrease. It has experienced a decline in its net income
between 2000 and 2001. Not all changes were specific to Sun Microsystems. Some of these
changes were industry wide. If Sun Microsystems was to outsource some of its employees it can
save money appealing to its stockholders. Consequently, outsourcing will allow for more emphasis
and focus on product development, which can ultimately increase revenue. Sun Microsystems
should consider bringing in a consulting firm to take a look at its current business plan. Potentially,
by doing so, the consulting firm can sift through

A Social Hierarchy Of Control Over Societal Resources
In all societies three kinds of resources are valued i) power the ability to impose one s will on
others; ii) prestige respect from others; iii) property wealth owned, whether measured in yams,
land etc. And all societies more complex than a simple gathering band, these resources are
unequally distributed among individuals and groups. When people who differ in their ascribed
and achieved characteristics are evaluated differently; a social hierarchy is formed. A hierarchy
is a set of ranked statuses from highest to lowest. Because both the most and least valued traits
are likely to be relatively rare, status hierarchies tend to be diamond shaped, narrow at the very
top and bottom. Within the hierarchy, people at different levels or strata, can claim different
amounts of power, prestige and property. In this way, a set of ranked statuses based on
evaluations of social worth is transformed into a hierarchy of control over societal resources.
Stratification systems thus, are both a cause and consequences of inequality. Although in a
hunting and gathering society all members are equally valued and rewarded, but it is a rare
phenomenon. Once the division of labour expands beyond gathering some tasks will be
considered more important than others, and the people who perform such tasks are rewarded with
power, respect and material goods. At the very least, labour is divided on the basis of sex and age,
so that all societies have gender and age stratification systems. The more

Who Is Sullivan In The Golden Age
Characters in the novel The Golden Age by Joan London who encounter cornering hardships

in Australia.

How Does Homelessness Affect Our Society
Every night across America, roughly 32,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are homeless
(Youth Homelessness). In the same night, hundreds of thousands of girls say goodnight to their
fellow sorority sisters before crawling into their beds. As a Panhellenic community, University of
Nebraska gives girls the opportunities to create friendships, form connections, and build strong
women. We are called to be active members of society, and use our fortunate lives to change the
world we live in. After visiting Community First! Village of Austin, Texas, it has become aware to
me the severity of homelessnessin America and how simple it can be to change it. Community
First! not only builds tiny homes through donations for homeless people around Austin, but gives
them a community to become a part of. Donating money to build a tiny house at Community First!
Village would not only strengthen UNL s Panhellenic Council s generous reputation, but also
support the movement to end homelessness through providing a home and community to a young
outcasted individual.
Community First! Village is sponsored by Mobile Loaves Fishes, a catholic charity that has has
grown to working every night, all year long, providing food, clothing, and hygiene products to the
homeless in surrounding cities of Austin. They have served over 5 million meals with the help of
19,000 volunteers. Their recent innovation (Community First!) is a 27 acre development that has
been building a tiny home community for homeless people to buy for inexpensive prices. The
village features miniature neighborhoods of homes, a church, garden, medical facility, market,
movie theater, and other amenities. The project continues to grow as donations and volunteers
come in for construction of housing and purchases of needed materials and goods. As of now,
the village has housed almost 200 former homeless men and women. Mobile Loaves Fishes
continues to house more people as construction is completed and word has spread to other major
cities of the work this organization has founded and grown. Many of the people living in the
village have come from a variety of lives before moving into the community. Some old, some new,
and often have been alone most of their life.

Finding the Composition of Limestone
Intro: Limestone is made from loose marine sediment (such as shells) that form into rock, but can
also come from dissolved calcium carbonate. When an acid is added to limestone it releases carbon
dioxide. This happens in a two step process. Step 1: CaCO3(s) 2HCl(aq) в†’ CaCl2(aq) H2CO3(aq)
Step 2: H2CO3(aq) в†’ CO2(g) H2O(l) The next reaction used is CaCl2(aq) (NH4)2SO4(aq) в†’
CaSO4(s) 2NH4Cl(aq). This is quantifying the calcium carbonate by finding out the amount
calcium ion is present. Mass Percent Composition is trying to find the amount present of a
specific component in a sample. The equation is mass % of A= (mass of A / mass of total

Major Phases Of A Company Growth
9. The three major phases of a company growth are the entrepreneurial phase, the managerial phase
and the consolidation phase. First, in the entrepreneurial phase a company focuses on its core
activities and on which market paths it should follow. Moreover, in terms of their facility, its policy
can be expected to emphasize on its functional needs rather than expending resources on symbolic
features. Additionally, there might be some uncertainty regarding the company future and a lack of
access to professional knowledge of space management, which may cause overcrowding and badly
chosen timing of relocation.
Second, during the managerial phase a company still focuses on its fundamental activities. .
However, now the company can now adopt workspace layout reflecting hierarchical tendencies. In
addition, new problem may occur requiring experts because of special space requirements.
Likewise, because of lack of management focus on the distribution of the space, issues related to
facilities and support services are dealt irregularly.
And third, during the consolidation phase skills in facilities management are available and use
more constantly. Dependence on cross functional teams and calculated experimentation with
teleworking and other alternative work practices can be expected to imply changes on the layout of
the company. Also, companies should consider to exploit the opportunities to introduce facility
management procedures.

Alcibiades Ethical Beliefs
Alcibiades displayed his eagerness to deceive multiple people in order to achieve what was in his
self interest his superiority and well being. He persuaded and encouraged other cities to make walls
to the sea, joining alongside Athens in the pursuit against Sparta.
While Alcibiades sustained an ongoing relationship with the people, it continued as an imbalance.
Alcibiades s lifestyle became public knowledge, and his luxurious behavior was exposed and not
particularly desirable to most Athenians, especially the conservative Athenians. This manifested a
discontent among the people, which only furthered the love hate relationship that Alcibiades had
with the people of Athens. Plutarch wrote,

Alcibiades used every situation to elevate himself and establish superiority, which enhanced the
type of unbalanced relationship he had with the people for most of his lifetime. Alcibiades s
unethical practices in both political and private life were questionable. He sought after pleasures
and naturally deceived many, making him a great politician, but dubious as a virtuous man.
Plutarch wrote, Certainly, if ever man was ruined by his own glory, it was Alcibiades (287). The
ambitions and passions in Alcibiades life that went unchecked resulted in the imbalance in his life
both private and public. Although he befriended Socrates early and strove for true honor and real
virtue, the rest of his life unfolded in a vicious way, rather than influenced by virtue. Alcibiades
adapted to both good and bad, vice and virtue, establishing a strong inconsistency in his morals as
well as his character altogether. The central image of this life was certainly a chameleon. Plutarch
wrote, Not that his natural disposition changed so easily, nor that his real character was so variable,
but, whether he was sensible that by pursuing his own inclinations he might give offense to those
with whom he had occasion to converse, he transformed himself into any shape, and adopted any
fashion, that he observed to be most agreeable (275 276). Alcibiades morphed into whatever it took,
whether he was around different people or aiding another nation, he made sure to adapt to his
surroundings that also helped further his own self interest as well. Earlier in the life, Plutarch wrote
that Alcibiades was neither completely virtuous nor vicious and as the life continued this never
became clearer. Alcibiades always maintained a neutral position in between vice and virtue.
Although Socrates attempted to alter Alcibiades and positively affect his soul, this change never
happened, thus resulting

A Doll s House And The Glass Menagerie
Symbolism is frequently used in dramatic works to represent abstract ideas and qualities,
potentially in the form of people, objects, places, or actions. Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House and
Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie each include various symbols to represent the social
messages that the authors are trying to convey to the audience. In A Doll s House, the central
character, Nora Helmer, can be seen as a symbolherself. Her family and her husband treat her like
a doll, and this oppression and condescension is the reason for her inner unhappiness and longing
for independence. As well, Ibsen also focuses on the solo dance that Nora performs the Tarantella.
This dance emphasizes Nora s feelings of separation and isolation from her... Show more content on

The importance of the fire escape is pronounced right at the beginning of the play: The apartment
faces an alley and is entered by a fire escape, a structure whose name is a touch of accidental
poetic truth, for all of these huge buildings are always burning with slow and implacable fires of
human desperation (Williams 1). The fire escape is used by all of the characters to ordinarily
enter and exit the apartment, but it is also a means of escape. Laura Wingfield suffers from a
bad leg that makes her incapable of leaving her home. Since it is too difficult for her to use the
stairs of the fire escape to leave, she prefers the safety of the apartment. The one time Laura
returns from the store and uses the fire escape she trips on the stairs, clearly demonstrating how
vulnerable she is in the outside world, and how greatly she is bound to her private world within
the apartment. Conversely, Tom Wingfield, Laura s brother, wants nothing more than to follow in
his father s footsteps and leave his family behind. He frequently uses the fire escape to go out and
smoke, which shows just how much he dislikes life inside of the apartment, and foreshadows his
eventual getaway. Williams hints at escape throughout the entire play, highlighting it as one of the
key themes. Tom is constantly comparing the loyalty he feels towards his mother and sister versus
his true longing to leave home and be free of the confines of

While at first blush the protection of cultural diversity...
While at first blush the protection of cultural diversity seems like a worthy cause to support for
many of us, there are much deeper implications than the prima facie façade multiculturalism
suggests. Instead, there is a deep and growing tension (Okin,1999; p10) between the ideals of
feminism and those concerned with the protection of cultural rights. This tension is exacerbated
when the protection of those rights safeguards the continuation of practices such as female genital
cutting(FGC) in the name of culture and tradition. Every culture is dynamic, complex, and rich in
its own ways. However when cultures come together and interact there are inevitably tensions and
one such tension is centred on gender and gender norms. In this... Show more content on

For this reason I will again turn to Okin (1999) to describe a claim made in the name of cultural
rights and in the context of basically liberal democracies (p10) that minority cultures or ways of
life are not sufficiently protected by the practice of ensuring the individual rights of their members,
and as a consequence these should also be protected through special group rights or privileges (p11).
This claim is at the forefront of many contemporary discussions around cultural group rights and
even more specifically the claim that groups, even the illiberal ones that violate their individual
members rights, requiring them to conform to group beliefs or norms have the right to be left
alone in a liberal society (Okin, 1999; p11). The latter is the claim I will be arguing against using
the case study of FGC as an example of why torture is not culture and therefore should not be left
alone.
In the spirit of clarifying terminology I would also like to defend my use of the term female genital
cutting (FGC). While the World Health Organization (2013) uses the commensurable term female
genital mutilation (FGM), I feel that the use of the word mutilation carries a strong negative
connotation and is needlessly inflammatory, instantly slanting perceptions towards a negative
viewpoint. While the term cutting isn t free from these undesirable undertones, it is more of a
technical term to describe the actual procedures that take place. While it could be

Alfred Sullivan Research Paper
Sullivan was Auburns quarterback from 1969 1971 and won Auburn s first Heisman in 1971
after setting several school and SEC records while guiding the Tigers to a 9 1 regular season
record. (Heisman n.d.), Sullivan was born in Birmingham, Ala., where he attended John Carroll
Catholic High School and was a star in three sports. He excelled in football and won an athletic
scholarship to Auburn in 1968, where he took over the starting quarterback spot as a sophomore
(freshmen were not eligible prior to 1972). He burst onto the college football scene in 1969,
throwing for nearly 1,700 yards and 16 touchdowns. As a junior, Sullivan s statistics soared, as he

Emma Essay
The reader s response to Emma is often a mixture of sympathy and impatience. Select two episodes
and discuss them in regards to this statement. Continually throughout Emma the reader feels a
mixture of sympathy and impatience for its main character Emma Woodhouse. The novel illustrates
her vast change in maturity, which occurs in one year. Due to Emmas personality and disposition
she will always get herself into difficult circumstances, but it is the way she reacts to the
circumstances that broadens and matures her character. The first episode takes place when she is in
the throws of naivety, and the other is when Emma has begun to mature and grow.

She even dictates the answer, and here she is becoming too involved with Harriet s affairs. Even
though Emma takes over the narration from
Jane Austen, the reader is able to see through Emma s faults and see that Robert Martin is a very
amiable man who would make a very good husband for Harriet. Emma ends up writing Harriet s
refusal and this sparks off further impatience because now Harriet, who is doting on
Emma s every word, is turning into a product of what Emma has told her rather than her true self.
Emma also refuses to heed Mr. Knightley s warnings when he states that, men of sense, whatever
you may chuse to say, do not want silly wives, obviously referring to Harriet. Emma is so wrapped
up in her created fantasy world that she fails to recognise the fact that Mr.
Elton is unlikely to lower himself to be with Harriet. Emma thinks that she is right and her self
confidence and pride prevent her from listening to an objective source. Whenever Harriet seemed
about to think or talk of Robert Martin, Emma made her think of Mr. Elton and so the infatuation
grew. Without fully realising it, Emma may have destroyed the possible relationship between
Harriet and Mr.

Essay about Do the right thing
The weather is sizzling hot and tensions are slowly coming to a boil in this Bedford Stuyvesant
Brooklyn neighborhood. Slowly but surely we see the heat melt away the barriers that were
keeping anger from rising to the surface. The Blacks and the Hispanics own the streets the
Koreans own the corner store and of course the Italians own the pizzeria, the Cops who happen to
be all Caucasian, prowl the streets inside out, looking for anyone to harass. Toes are then stepped

Lee would have been very meticulous about recording his findings, very much like an
anthropologist today.
When we try to understand why the characters act as they act and what drives each of them, the
viewers are inevitably drawn to the conclusion that they are just like them. They realize they are
human; they have both good qualities and bad qualities. Spike Lee also makes them understand
that at times they may make terrible mistakes, and that at other times they may display
admirable heroism, and that sometimes they simply act without knowing why. Spike Lee does
more than try to show his viewers that despite tensions, this Black neighborhood is a
community. What Lee does is he makes the viewers think. He simply presents events as they are
leaving the viewer to figure out the motives of the characters and the why behind the course of
events. Lee doesn t really put a positive light on any particular race while shadowing the other
ones. He doesn t try to make conflicts have an obvious solution. Lee simply re creates a piece of
life, with a little twist of extreme (yet realistic) drama for deeper effect, and by doing this he tries
to simply make his audience think and question.
Another reason why Spike Lee makes a good anthropologist is that perhaps why Lee made
everyone just as guilty and just as

What Are The Behaviors That Influence Information Security...
The primary implication of the current study is the positive social change. Through the themes,
educators and school administrators may consider prioritizing the need for information security

administrators may implement policies that promote the protection of information among students

Participants reported that undergoing training and taking security seriously reduced unauthorized
disclosures. Arachchilage and Love (2014) confirmed the need for information security training.
The researchers suggested that personnel have an insufficient amount of both knowledge and
training to mitigate threats related to information security. For instance, organizations attempt to
counter information security threats by publishing organizational policies and conducting periodic
information security training that assist in the mitigation efforts to thwart threats such as fraud,
viruses, malware, spyware, and social engineering attacks (Arachchilage Love, 2014; Chen,
Ramamurthy, Wen, 2015; Singh et al., 2013).
Aloul (2012) supports the reiteration for information security training. An aspect of securing
organizational data and information in the public school system brings about the need for
information security awareness and training due to increases in security incidents (Aloul, 2012). In
addition, Aloul (2012) added that a method for mitigating and combating the unauthorized release
of PII is the training and education of users in the arena of information security. Trinkle et al. (2014)
explained that the unauthorized release of information or information leakage can be attributed to

Description Of Cocaine
In 2014, a report came out naming London the cocaine capital of Europe. The water system
contains a higher concentration of this drug than in any other part of the continent, and bank
notes are no longer tested for traces of cocaine. British police feel the test is a waste of time, as any
money that has been in circulationf or a few weeks will have traces of cocaine. Although it is
estimated that a large majority of the drugs being sold as cocaine don t actually contain the drug,
this is still of concern, as addiction is a problem for many people who try this substance.

however, find the withdrawal symptoms disappear in a week or two. The craving for the drug can

Treating A Cocaine Addiction
Individuals must find a facility that is trained to deal with people who are addicted to cocaine.
Certain therapies have been shown to be of help in treating these people. Cognitive behavioral
therapy is one method that may be used, and some facilities make use of motivational incentives for
those who stop using cocaine. A residential program is often of help to those struggling to

The Benefits Of College Education
At the present time, college education in our society is no longer an alternative or a privilege
but a necessity. We have raised it in practice and are convinced that we need higher education to
succeed in life. There is a saying that says, If you think education is precious, try to ignore it. But
since our times and career needs are in constant motion college is an absolute necessity. There are
people who never walk in college and do better than those who have a Master s degree. There are
opinions from both sides that contain valid arguments. College is worth the price and duration
because it generates more financial opportunity which leads to a more stable and happy life.
A college degree can indeed translate to personal happiness, is it a coincidence? Bryan Cohen,
author of The Post College Guide to Happiness, thinks there s a connection. Higher education gives
people the opportunity to explore their passions, be they writing, engineering, or even magic,
Cohen explains. Graduates can use their educational experience to pursue what they love to do.
That s why, Cohen says, educational attainment can lead to some serious happiness. This is true
college grads will have a happier life due to better job conditions, as well as higher career
fulfillment. Leonhardt stated only 27% of Americans can say they have a bachelor s degree or
higher(41) This shows how rare a college degree really is. A recent study by Nazareth College

Hurricane Mitch Research Paper
In late October of 1998, Hurricane Mitch landed in Central America, claiming the lives of more
than 11,000 people, and causing more than $5 billion in damages of homes, and businesses.
Hurricane Mitch was considered the most ferocious hurricane to hit the Western Hemisphere in
over 200 years. Hurricane Mitch began as a tropical depression on October 22, 1998. Four short
days later, on October 26, it had intensified into a Category 5 hurricane. Winds had reached 180
mph, and gusts were reaching up to 200 mph. First, this hurricane landed on the island of
Honduras on the date of October 29. It moved through Central America, and finally reached
Florida as a tropical storm on November 4 5. The islands of Honduras and Nicaragua were hit
extremely hard by Mitch. In Honduras, entire villages were washed away by the heavy rainfall
causing mudslides and floods. The intensity of the rain was nearly 75 inches. Nearly all crops
were destroyed. The Hurricane also left many affects on Nicaragua. In one specific area called
Posoltega, more than 2,000 people were caught in a huge mudslide. Many other nations were
affected by this hurricane but the death tolls in these places were much lower and insignificant
than Honduras and Nicaragua. In total, 11,000 people died, which places this storm as the most

Online Writing vs Formal English
We have come full circle in forms of communication. From cave man grunts, body and hand
gestures, and pictographic wall paintings, to cubicle man lols (laugh out loud), ttyls (talk to you

expressive and communicative richness of writingis slowly becoming the archeological relics of
an electronic modern society. I am no stranger to this failing. I started high school with a loose
grasp of the tools of writing; I left high school with a, slightly, better grasp of those tools. Now,

loose grasp of writing skills I had is becoming far looser. My writing... Show more content on

Texting for me is an all day experience. I communicate when or where I will be, or check up on
what people are doing. I use digital shorthand here more than anywhere. Most words are not
spelled out in full, cumn ovr nw (Coming over now.), and wht r u doin (What are you doing?).
Even the accepted cyber vernacular is ignored in favor of my own gibberish. Mostly I write to a
specific audience not an unknown reader, and take liberties with my words.
My major failing when I try to assimilate my techno text with a scholastic essay is, I am not used
to communicating in a formal manner to a potentially critical and voluntary reader. With the
ambiguous, sometimes incoherent cyber darts of communiquГ©; my message is set adrift with
little care about how it is received. It is more a self centered tap on someone s electronic
shoulder saying, I m here , and with no thought whether they want to read what I write. When
my complete thoughts are expressed, they are often ambiguous. I write easily discarded words.
I cannot use this form for my English class. In the essays required for school, I have to write
carefully and in an engaging way. One pitfall I find with essay writing is I sometimes fall into a
style that is the complete opposite of my text style. I use large words with a meandering train of
thought, and start to show off instead of communicate. When I start to write, either I try to be

Essay Explain Why Viet Minh Defeated The French
1.Explain why Viet Minh defeated the French. How did the legacy of nationalism create Ho Chi
Minh s revolutionary movement?
There was ever a formal presentation of war. Rather, the French attempted to reassert their power
over their state of Indochina after World War Two. Preceding the War, the French could indicate
this region as one of the immense bits of its domain. Toward the end of World War Two, occasions
in Europe constrained activities in China. The French government demanded that France must hold
two colonies keeping in order to hold its national pride: Indochina and Algeria. The outcome was
two horrible colonial wars. Irritating the matter, the French were not forceful in uprooting
components that had worked together with the Japanese amid their control of Indochina. This fed
nationalistic wrath toward the French. The Viet Minh battled the French until 1954, when they
dispensed a mortifying thrashing on the French at a mountain fortress called Dien Bien Phu.

she is using fact, because everything she says can be supported in some way. When listening to the
debates, Hillary mentions several times that she has a fact checker on her website,

Trump also had trouble answering specific questions regarding his plans and had a hard time

in the second debate he also weaved around tough questions about ungraceful remarks he had made

After a hard day of work, many adults run to food to deal with stress, reliving their childhood

more likely the child will grow into an adult who eats for comfort (rewarding kids). Kids being

If you were at a university at this time, you would follow the religious standards, just as I could
never get out of going to Friday mass at HGA. Nowadays, religion is a touchy topic. It is left to
the discretion of the individual whether or not he or she wants to follow the practices and how
closely. Church and state are now separated as to avoid major conflicts. Peter Abelard questions
the theological teachings of medieval universities and is criticized for it. He says Is God one, or
no? At this time scriptures were not to be questioned and were considered to be true. As we
know now, science has become a major source of answers in society. Anyway, Abelard brings a
whole new dimension to the table when he questions god s existence and some of the things that
the church stands for. The whole basis is to use logic and reason to ponder things in a
philosophical fashion. This faith vs. reason debate involved Abelard and others who felt that god
was in a persons being, or heart. Academia took up most of the students daily and weekly lives.
Scholars took full advantage of down time to relax and enjoy themselves. Social life was the
second major aspect of a cleric s university experience. As we know, the student body greatly
impacts the surrounding town s economy; however social issues arise as well. When students and
townspeople are in the same atmosphere, and drinking, fights are bound to break lose. These battles
came to be known

Major Themes In Brave s Life
Robotics prodigy Hiro lives in the city of San Fransokyo. Next to his older brother, Tadashi, Hiro
s closest companion is Baymax, a robot whose sole purpose is to take care of people. When a
devastating turn of events throws Hiro into the middle of a dangerous plot, he transforms Baymax
and his other friends, Go Go Tamago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred into a band of high tech
heroes. All of them fight to beat the masked man from taking over the entire world.
Some majors themes in the movie are friendship, anger, and creativity. Early on the movie, it is
known that Hiro is a lonely child, his only friends are his brother and his toy robot. After the loss of

He gets mad at Callaghan for what happened to his brother and feels the need to seek revenge on
him. His friends encourage him not to kill Callaghan because of what happened to his brother.
Listening to his friends, Hiro does not kill Callaghan and it turns out to be a great decision that
he made. This theme in this movie is relevant today because many people often feel the need to
seek revenge if something bad was inflicted upon them. For example, when my brother punched
me in the stomach randomly just to inflict harm on me, I felt the natural want to punch him back
for what he has done. In hindsight, it is not good to seek revenge because it just made the
situation worse, both sides wounded after the brawl. While many may believe that seeking
revenge is the way to settle disputes, in many cases, people tend to end up getting hurt like I did
myself. Another moral in the story is friends and family help each other. After the event that
happened to his brother, his family and friends helped comfort him. Baymax, his personal
healthcare robot, diagnoses Hiro and finds out that his emotional health is low, so it prescribes
Hiro with support from his family and friends. On top of that, his friends even fight with him to
defeat the

The Weight Reduction Of The Drive Shaft
Abstract Almost all automobiles (at least those which correspond to design with rear wheel drive
and front engine installation) have transmission shafts. The weight reduction of the drive shaft
can have a certain role in the general weight reduction of the vehicle and is a highly desirable
goal, if it can be achieved without increase in cost and decrease in quality and reliability. It is
possible to achieve design of composite drive shaft with less weight to increase the first natural
frequency of the shaft and to decrease the bending stresses using various stacking sequences. By
doing the same, maximize the torque transmission and torsional buckling capabilities are also
maximized.
Key Words: Propeller shaft, Drive shaft, optimization, Composite material, Composite drive shaft
design etc. INTRODUCTION
The advanced composite materials such as Graphite, Carbon, Kevlar and Glass with suitable resins
are widely used because of their high specific strength (strength / density) and high specific modulus
(modulus / density). Advanced composite materials seem ideally suited for long, power driver shaft
(propeller shaft) applications. Their elastic properties can be tailored to increase the torque they can
carry as well as the rotational speed at which they operate. The drive shafts are used in automotive,
aircraft and aerospace applications. The automotive industry is exploiting composite material
technology for structural components construction in order to obtain the reduction

America Chavez Evolution
The Evolution of Women throughout Comics Between the years of 1938 to 2017, traditional
gender roles slowly broke down and evolved, whether it d be in politics, entertainment, or literature.
To be more specific, superhero comics such as Superman (1938), Wonder Woman (1941), Fantastic
Four (1961), Watchmen (1986), and America Chavez (2017), all comprised in shaping the
traditional beliefs of genderroles and empowered change. Although traditional gender norms are
still an issue today, comics have attempted at times, but also succeeded in breaking down barriers
while appealing to the audience. By using different artistic techniques, such as the iconic illustration
itself, types of closure, and lines sketched, illustrators battled but succeeded... Show more content

Nonetheless, our society has come a long way to demonstrate gender equality, especially in
superhero comics. At first, women weren t valued as much as males to be as equal as them but as
time progressed, slowly but surely, women were able to prove that theory wrong and become just
as successful as the males in the world of superheroes. It s critical to understand our past, whether
it s fictional or not, in hopes for history to not be repeated again. On that note, learning the
evolution of women in comics, allows society to bring new and creative ideas for the generations
to come that displays equal boundaries for both genders and become the example to look up

Edward Thatch s Revenge In Treasure Island
It was a clear August afternoon and Edward Thatch stood aboard his ship, the Queen Anne s
Revenge, holding a spyglass to his eye. He was looking at a small white speck on the horizon
that he assumed to be a brig, either Spanish or British. She s a Spanish Brig, sir! the lookout
yelled from the crow s nest, corroborating Edward s assumption. He was quite avid when it came
to taking prizes, and he was the most feared, despicable pirate in the West Indies. During battle,
Edward became Blackbeard, as he is better known, putting slow burning fuses in his hair and long
black beard and lighting them on fire to simulate him being the devil or a demon. All of his
enemies were terrified of him, and the very sight of him evoked terror, causing his enemies to run
away. Blackbeard was, even without the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two ships both fired several more volleys, but the Spanish ship was quickly incapacitated.
The Queen Anne s Revenge pulled alongside it, and the crew members fired muskets and threw
grappling hooks. Heave! Heave! one of the crew members exclaimed. The brig was slowly
pulled closer, and the Spaniards returned fire and prepared to defend the ship. Once the two
ships were close enough, Blackbeard s crew members jumped aboard. Blackbeard lit the fuses in
his beard and jumped aboard as well. The enemies cowered in fear at the very sight of him. Soon
enough, the enemy surrendered, crushed by the sheer power of Blackbeard s crew. The deck of
the brig was a gruesome sight. Several bodies lay on the deck, some of them still conscious, in
agony. One Spanish Soldier missing one leg was screaming in pain. Some of Blackbeard s crew
grimaced at the sight, but Blackbeard smiled. Blackbeard s crew suffered no injuries aside from a
few minor abrasions and cuts. They took the brig s supplies, locked the surviving crew in the hold,
and continued on their business as if nothing happened. Just an average day for a not so average

The Analysis of Catholicism and the Artist Essay
James Joyce s novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man illustrates the confused state of a
generation split by religious divergence and thus lack of ability to evolve towards modernism. With
the incorporation of Protestant belief and ceremony by the English, traditional Catholic faith within
Irelandwas challenged with alteration. This abrupt integration of Protestant worship illuminates the
strange inability of a post English Irish culture to advance into a modern more spiritual world,
mostly unrestricted by religious philosophies. Joyce illustrates how Irish culture has been ripped
apart by its own faith, not by that of the English. Through the incorporation of an opposing faith,
England created a sense of alertness within the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it was not long after that Henry would enforce a systematic four step process aimed at
bringing him more power over the Roman Catholic domination in which he had dissociated
himself earlier in his life. Such process started with the infiltration of a large British army of
2,300 soldiers into Ireland, followed by the killing of all men within the Fitzgerald family.
Furthermore, in 1536, Henry enforced the Reformation upon Ireland, hoping to create a
Protestant province loyal to the Crown. And in 1541, whilst declaring himself King, Henry
specified that all lands were to be submitted to the Crown only to be returned if owners pledged
their loyalty. Following King Henry s reformation, Ireland underwent a series of misfortunes
which daunted its most devote Catholics. In 1608, King James I allowed Protestants to take over
catholic lands, in 1690 the battle of Boyne took place, marked by William of Orange s conquering
over Catholicism, 1692 brought with it laws against catholic voting rights, the physical practice of
the religion and ownership by its followers. And within the years of 1845 49, those whom conjured
the strength to stay devote would challenge the existence of God when one million perished by
way of the Great Potato Famine. In an almost inevitable manner, after hundreds of years of
suppression, the Easter Rising

Comparsion Of The Correlation Between Neurons And Perception
Synopsis
Neurons are responsible primarily for their intended sense. However, neurons can sometimes be
bimodal, meaning that they respond to two different senses. Primary sensory areas contain neurons
that respond to only one sense. However, some primary sensory areas have outlier senses, and is
not exclusive. Perception is defined as the brain s interpretation of sensory information. However,
that s not all, since expectations also play a role in how the brain perceives the world. Therefore, it
can be said that perception is a combination of sensory information and expectation. Helmholtz
stated that previous experiences act in conjunction with present sensations to produce a perceptual
image. Expectation dominates perception when there is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are two types of sensory information: ambiguous sensory information, which is when
expectation dominates perception, and clear sensory information, which is when sensory
information dominates perception. When sensory information dominates perception, neurons are
being fired in response to the stimulus. However, when expectation dominates perception, how do
the neurons that are being fired in our brain differ? In this case, since perception is based on our
past experiences, what parts of the brain would there be the highest frequency of neuron activity?
Taking this question one step further, how do the neurons that are being fired in our brain differ
when ambiguous sensory information is present without expectation? What areas of our brain are
most active when this occurs, since we have no expectation and there is also not enough sensory
information present to activate the receptors? This is important to know in order to further
understand the difference between how sensory information and expectation impact human
perception in our daily lives. This would further improve our understanding of how illusions work
and how they impact our

quality grocery store. Eighty percent private label product mix, expanding its target markets,
keeping costs down, and extremely effective marketing powers Trader Joe s increase popularity.
Since 2002, the market value of private food label has risen twelve percent (Datamonitor, 2008).

This is because they constantly keep their shelf stock moving. This is shown by the SKU (stock
keeping units) of 3500 compared to the traditional supermarket, which has an SKU of 55,000
(Kowitt, 2010). Trader Joe s keeps their SKU much lower which enables them to constantly offer
high numbers of new products. Therefore brand loyalty will not be as high for Trader Joe s. Trader
Joe s keeps their costs per unit down achieving exceptional economies of scale. All of these
barriers to enter the market make it difficult for new entrants trying to enter the market. The
second force that I will use to analyze the Trader Joe s company is the the rivalry among
established competitors . Factors to consider when looking at the rivalries in the industry are
industry demand, cost conditions, and exit barriers. Trader Joe s competitors include The
Kroger Co., Whole Foods Market, and Safewat Inc., and all super markets in general (Llopis,
2011). With that said, there seems to be a high demand for what Trader Joe s offers, private
labels. This means that the intensity in the industry is less compared to an industry with a flat
demand. Trader Joe s does not have to fight hard to sell their products because of the service they
have created. Trader Joe s brand can be considered diversity on steroids which has somewhat of a
cult following among consumers (Llopis, 2011). Consumers that want unique experiences with
their food are able to do exactly that at

He retired nearly 18 years before I was born. Everything I know about him I know from my

Positive Impact On Electric Cars
My research question that I would like to further explore is what is holding back electric car
sales? Why have we not gone entirely electric, especially with all the benefits toward the
environment? I believe this question should be explored because whether it be electric cars or
cars with an internal combustion engine, cars are a vital form of transportation and in our
everyday life. People use cars as a form of transportation to get to work, to drive their kids to
schools, to drive themselves to the grocery store, to see loved ones and families. With all this
driving, it is important to know the impact it has on our environment. So far, internal combustion
engines have shown negative harmful impacts towards the environment in regards to carbon
dioxide emissions. These carbon dioxide emissions have shown a positive correlation with global
warming which is an important ongoing issue today. It is important to reduce our carbon footprint
in order to preserve the planet for future generations. Bringing more awareness as to why electric
vehicles have a positive impact on our environment is important because not many people are
informed.
Through my research question, I hope to learn whether electric vehicles make a big enough
difference to help our environment. I also want to explore why we have not gone entirely electric
and specific reasons as to why people are afraid of change. People find switching to an electric
vehicle to be a huge lifestyle change. In Graham Rowe s

I want you to imagine being 12 years old. You came to school one day and saw your name scrawled
all over the school toilet doors, accompanied by the terms faggot, gay and disgusting . I want you
now to stand in the shoes of Jake, an 11 year old transgender boy. You are currently being racially
slurred, beaten up and spat on by your mates , who discovered you were a tranny. I want you to
stand on Ben s point of view. And think, what if your coach kicked you out of your football team
simply because you weren t masculine enough for the sport? Finally, I want you to become Jane,

single day is filled to the brim with inequality and danger.
Ladies and Gentlemen, over a tenth of our society is made up of the LGBTI ( the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) community. In 2010, the Safe Schools Coalition Australia was
founded, this establishment brought hope and protection to hundreds upon thousands of students
experiencing bullying. However, being the nation we are, extreme right wing bigots are attempting
to withdraw this life saving initiative from nationwide primary and secondary schools.
I ask you, how is the sexuality of LGBTI children any different to our diversity in hair colour ? (is
this a good example)? In Australia, we are proud of our individuality and celebrate our differences.
So, why is something so valuable, so integral to our society used an excuse for the discrimination
and degradation of others? Why is it that right wing bigots and conservative MP s are starving
vulnerable children of protection and safety?
Our opposition complains relentlessly about how the safe schools approach is controversial and
ideological, accusing the initiative of promoting a radical view of gender

History of Horse Meat Consumption The ancient Botai culture in Kazakhstan first domesticated
horses 5,500 years ago, and its economy was equine based. Horses were used for labor,
transportation, milk, and consumption. Even at that early time, if the horses did not succumb to
the rigors of daily life, work related injuries, or battle, then they were sold for salvage. The money
received from the salvage was reinvested in a younger, stronger horse. The salvaged horse would go

The closing of the last plant in the USA in 2007 caused thousands of horses to be sent to Mexico
and Canada. The US Senate has passed a resolution and is urging the House of Representatives to
offer incentives to open horse processing plants in the United States. Senators say it is cruel to
force old or lame horses to wait for natural death.
Former Missouri State Senator Matt Bartle, a Republican, stated, The unintended consequences
have been disastrous for horses. We now have horses all over the state that are skin and bones that
are suffering tremendously. Some people actually enjoy the taste of horse meat. It feeds dogs. It
feeds other animals.
Former Missouri State Senator Frank Barnitz, a Democrat, stated People need to realize that horses

The Electoral College Is The Best Interests Of All The People
The Electoral College has long been controversial, and is subject to both criticism and defense.
To understand why either side is valid we must look at its values and its weaknesses, its pros and
cons. The Electoral College was devised to proportionally dole out the power of selecting our
executives geographically. In doing so the Electoral Collegegives otherwise marginalized portions
of the U.S. population a voice. Adversely the Electoral College can be seen as an obstruction to
democracyand the will of the people. Whether or not the Electoral College serves the best interests
of all the people in United States is up to debate. This paper functions to reveal what validities either
argument may include.
The Electoral College was founded on the idea that no entity, federal or popular, should have the
power to singularly determine the outcome of electing our country s executive. Founding father
James Madison writes in the Federalist papers about his concern regarding tyrannical factions that
arise in pure democracies. Madison in Federalist Paper No. 10, recognizes a faction as ...a number
of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and
actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other
citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community. (The Federalist Papers) In

How To Make A Small Bathroom Look Better Essay
How to make a small bathroom look bigger
Bathrooms are indispensable for every human accommodation, one cannot ignore the place

shrinking space, people are compelled to compromise with its size.

Trimmed out in wood or tile, a tall, expansive mirror with lighting installed on top of it, or
hanging in front of it, will double the light s impact and make the space grow. Don t use double
mirrors over side by side sinks either. Again, it will chop up the space. Mirrors reflect light on
the surfaces in your bathroom and can create the illusion of more room. Instead of hanging a tiny
mirror above the sink, use multiple mirrors or cover one whole wall with an oversized one. A full
length mirror against the wall reflects lots of light and will add depth to a narrow bathroom.
Open Shelves Mean More Moving Space
If you absolutely rely on drawers to hide your clutter, consider a floating vanity without legs.
These attach to the wall and keep your floors clear, which can make the room look and feel more
spacious. While cabinets and vanities are must haves in small spaces with little storage, they
physically and visually take up space. Open shelves allow the eye to travel from wall to wall,
making the room look larger. They also force you to be more selective with what you keep in the
bathroom, which makes the space tidier.

  • 2. Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People... Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People Puerto Rico . The name immediately brings to mind images of a beautiful lush tropical island of enchantment. The name Puerto Rico usually does not conjure the image of Taino Indians or African slaves, yet these populations have great importance in laying the foundation for the notion of identity of Puerto Ricans. In contemporary debates of Puerto Rican identity, it is essential to examine the history of the island to determine the effects of Spanish colonialism on Puerto Rican identity. As he demonstrates in his article Puerto Rico: the Four Storeyed Country , Jose L. Gonzalez discusses the notion of identity as a series of storeys, one built upon another in order further ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 17). The island s discovery did not lead to a quick occupation, though. Juan Ponce de Leon, in search of gold, made the first effort to settle on the island in 1508. In the next twenty years, the Taino population became decimated while forced to labor in prospecting gold, a phase that ended in this time, succumbing to disease and a breakdown in their social network. An important implication of this initial occupation of the island by Spaniards is the imposition of the Spanish language. Because the Taino population could be counted in small amounts and Spanish had established their presence on the island by instilling their language as the only accepted language, in the name of Spain, a first storey was constructed in the notion of identity of the Puerto Rican. The Tainos had been moved out and taken over, the Spanish had moved in and started to let their culture infiltrate into that of the Taino, and now things were changing. Because the gold rush on the island lost its surge, the Spanish turned its attention to the agricultural success they could have with the island. However, as a result of their occupation, they lacked the labor force to effectively move an agricultural economy. In order to replenish the population and create a strong labor force, the Spanish took part in what others around Puerto Rico had begun to do, import cheap labor, namely African slaves. As the profit grew from cash crops sugar emerging as the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Mistakes of the Brilliant General, Napoleon Bonaparte... The assumption held by many that Napoleon Bonaparte was a brilliant general and an exceptional leader is debatable when the Frenchman s many mistakes are revealed. Bonaparte was born to a wealthy family with previous political connections (Wilde 1). He entered a military academy at only nine years old and entered the French Army Artillery Regiment seven years later (Wilde 1). As Bonaparte moved up in the militaryranks, he made himself known with his political opinions and his successful leadership of the revolutionaries armed forces (Wilde 1). As he became more famous, Bonaparte threw open the gates to his path to power. Thus began the era of Napoleon, a time of absolute power, vast reform, and relentless military invasions led by a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His plan backfired, and the French were pinned down in Egypt by the powerful British admiral Horiato Nelson, which led to Napoleon crawling back to France licking his wounds (McDougal, 584). Due to the public s ignorance towards this defeat, Napoleon s public image vastly improved, and his gain in power started to lead to totalitarianism. When the Directory began to lose political popularity with the common folk, Napoleon led an overthrow of the government (McDougal, 584). The aftermath of the coup seemed to be flawless; peace had come to Europe for the first time in ten years, and Napoleon, the most powerful public figure in France, could now focus on re strengthening France (McDougal, 585). However, the countries of Britain, Austria, and Russia were forming the Second Coalition, an alliance with the intent to stop Napoleon, behind the scenes of France s post victory glory (McDougal, 585). Napoleon soon held a plebiscite, or a vote by the people, which made himself emperor and bestowed total power upon him (McDougal, 585). As the years passed, Napoleon made many fatal military mistakes that led to the collapse of his empire and the defiling of the French Revolution s legacy. These mistakes were terminal in three main campaigns, the Battle of Trafalgar, the Peninsular War, and the invasion attempt on Russia (Wilde, 2). The battle of Trafalgar was Napoleon s attempt to invade Britain (McDougal, 587). Napoleon s specialty was land ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hardware Design Practices For Modern Hardware Hardware is the basis of any computing system and, as such, should be the first part of the system to consider security. The research presented in Trustworthy Hardware from Untrusted Components looks at the present state of hardware security, analyzes the vulnerabilities and possible solutions, and presents an alternative approach to ensure that the end result of the hardware design process is a secure and trustworthy piece of hardware. There are many factors that contribute to the current susceptibility of hardware to attacks. Modern hardware design practices incorporate the use of more third party intellectual property (IP) components, such as USB components. Modern hardware design practices require that a piece of hardware pass through thousands of engineers in the stages from design to manufacture. Modern hardware is much more complex than what has been manufactured in the past. Finally, modern hardware is designed by teams with relatively few designers for each subcomponent. In an idealistic world, hardware would be designed and manufactured in a single secure location with trusted personnel handling the process from inception to manufacture; however, this idea is ineffective and cost prohibitive making it unlikely to be put into practice. Hardware design follows a very similar process as the software engineering lifecycle and even has many of the same steps. For instance, the first step in both processes is to gather the specifications for the requirements. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Power In Antigone And The Bacchae Greek dramas often contained a singular view on historical ideas or people. This is demonstrated in the two Greek tragedies, Antigone by Sophocles and the Bacchae by Euripides V. The tragedy Antigone, critiques a Kreon who rules with fear and pride and suffers a tremendous tragedy, while the Bacchae praises Pentheus for attempting to regain control over his chaotic city yet still suffer an undesirable fate. Both tragedies focus on different aspects of political power. The fashion, in which both Kreon and Pentheus achieve their title as king, demonstrates the extent of power they both believe they contain. With Kreon refusing to provide polyneikes with the proper burial, Kreon refused to provide Hades of his rightful property. Antigone warns Kreon that his decision of refusing to provide the burial will result in punishment, Since you, a mere man, imposed them have the force to trample on the gods unwritten laws (Antigone 490 493). Antigone accuses Kreon, a mere man, of dishonoring the laws written by the gods. As a result of denying Hades of his rights, Kreon suffers a fate worse than death. As a payment of withholding the body, Kreon must witness the death of his only son Haimon and accept the death of Eurydike, his wife. Kreon attempting to protect his honor from Antigone, results in Kreon losing everything he considers important in his heart. However, Kreon s lost results in the humbling of his personality. At the end of Antigone, he admits, A foolish impulsive man who killed you, my son, mindlessly killed you as well, my wife (Antigone 1500 1502). The gods punishes those who prevent them of their proper rites, and those who allow their pride to blind their moral judgment. It gives women the power to choose when they are ready to have a baby, with whom they wish to have it with, and how many children to limit the family to. In the past, women had no control over childbearing due to many restrictions. With Margaret Sanger s efforts, birth control awareness became accepted by the people and the legal system, changing the lives of countless women in their fight towards equal opportunity. She changed the way that childbearing was viewed in America and paved a road that led to gender equality. Margaret Sanger developed an interest in birth control advocacy through her involvement in the movement for women s rights, dedicating her life in support of contraceptive awareness. In the early 1900s, women began advocating for greater access to contraception and birth control information, both to increase women s independence and to decrease unwanted pregnancies and illegal abortions ( State Abortion Laws ). Sanger joined the movement, becoming a member of many female rights organizations. As a member of the Socialist Party and a woman s labor organizer, Sanger met [influential] leader such as Eugene V. Debs, Emma Goldman, and Bill Haywood of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) . As a result of influence from Goldman and other radical women, Sanger became convinced that married women could never become equal without being able to control childbearing (McPherson and Gertle). The popular women s rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s emphasized reproductive rights as an essential component of women s liberation that would lead to gender equality. • 10. A Social Hierarchy Of Control Over Societal Resources In all societies three kinds of resources are valued i) power the ability to impose one s will on others; ii) prestige respect from others; iii) property wealth owned, whether measured in yams, land etc. And all societies more complex than a simple gathering band, these resources are unequally distributed among individuals and groups. When people who differ in their ascribed and achieved characteristics are evaluated differently; a social hierarchy is formed. A hierarchy is a set of ranked statuses from highest to lowest. Because both the most and least valued traits are likely to be relatively rare, status hierarchies tend to be diamond shaped, narrow at the very top and bottom. Within the hierarchy, people at different levels or strata, can claim different amounts of power, prestige and property. In this way, a set of ranked statuses based on evaluations of social worth is transformed into a hierarchy of control over societal resources. Stratification systems thus, are both a cause and consequences of inequality. Although in a hunting and gathering society all members are equally valued and rewarded, but it is a rare phenomenon. Once the division of labour expands beyond gathering some tasks will be considered more important than others, and the people who perform such tasks are rewarded with power, respect and material goods. At the very least, labour is divided on the basis of sex and age, so that all societies have gender and age stratification systems. The more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. How Does Homelessness Affect Our Society Every night across America, roughly 32,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are homeless (Youth Homelessness). In the same night, hundreds of thousands of girls say goodnight to their fellow sorority sisters before crawling into their beds. As a Panhellenic community, University of Nebraska gives girls the opportunities to create friendships, form connections, and build strong women. We are called to be active members of society, and use our fortunate lives to change the world we live in. After visiting Community First! Village of Austin, Texas, it has become aware to me the severity of homelessnessin America and how simple it can be to change it. Community First! not only builds tiny homes through donations for homeless people around Austin, but gives them a community to become a part of. Donating money to build a tiny house at Community First! Village would not only strengthen UNL s Panhellenic Council s generous reputation, but also support the movement to end homelessness through providing a home and community to a young outcasted individual. Community First! Village is sponsored by Mobile Loaves Fishes, a catholic charity that has has grown to working every night, all year long, providing food, clothing, and hygiene products to the homeless in surrounding cities of Austin. They have served over 5 million meals with the help of 19,000 volunteers. Their recent innovation (Community First!) is a 27 acre development that has been building a tiny home community for homeless people to buy for inexpensive prices. The village features miniature neighborhoods of homes, a church, garden, medical facility, market, movie theater, and other amenities. The project continues to grow as donations and volunteers come in for construction of housing and purchases of needed materials and goods. As of now, the village has housed almost 200 former homeless men and women. Mobile Loaves Fishes continues to house more people as construction is completed and word has spread to other major cities of the work this organization has founded and grown. Many of the people living in the village have come from a variety of lives before moving into the community. Some old, some new, and often have been alone most of their life. ... • 13. Calcium Carbonate Formation Sam Wylie Karly Kindoll Winter Dean CHE 111 028 9/25/17 Finding the Composition of Limestone Intro: Limestone is made from loose marine sediment (such as shells) that form into rock, but can also come from dissolved calcium carbonate. When an acid is added to limestone it releases carbon dioxide. This happens in a two step process. Step 1: CaCO3(s) 2HCl(aq) в†’ CaCl2(aq) H2CO3(aq) Step 2: H2CO3(aq) в†’ CO2(g) H2O(l) The next reaction used is CaCl2(aq) (NH4)2SO4(aq) в†’ CaSO4(s) 2NH4Cl(aq). This is quantifying the calcium carbonate by finding out the amount calcium ion is present. Mass Percent Composition is trying to find the amount present of a specific component in a sample. • 14. Major Phases Of A Company Growth 9. The three major phases of a company growth are the entrepreneurial phase, the managerial phase and the consolidation phase. First, in the entrepreneurial phase a company focuses on its core activities and on which market paths it should follow. Moreover, in terms of their facility, its policy can be expected to emphasize on its functional needs rather than expending resources on symbolic features. He persuaded and encouraged other cities to make walls to the sea, joining alongside Athens in the pursuit against Sparta. While Alcibiades sustained an ongoing relationship with the people, it continued as an imbalance. Alcibiades s lifestyle became public knowledge, and his luxurious behavior was exposed and not particularly desirable to most Athenians, especially the conservative Athenians. Alcibiades s unethical practices in both political and private life were questionable. He sought after pleasures and naturally deceived many, making him a great politician, but dubious as a virtuous man. Plutarch wrote, Certainly, if ever man was ruined by his own glory, it was Alcibiades (287). The ambitions and passions in Alcibiades life that went unchecked resulted in the imbalance in his life both private and public. Although he befriended Socrates early and strove for true honor and real virtue, the rest of his life unfolded in a vicious way, rather than influenced by virtue. Alcibiades adapted to both good and bad, vice and virtue, establishing a strong inconsistency in his morals as well as his character altogether. The central image of this life was certainly a chameleon. Plutarch wrote, Not that his natural disposition changed so easily, nor that his real character was so variable, but, whether he was sensible that by pursuing his own inclinations he might give offense to those with whom he had occasion to converse, he transformed himself into any shape, and adopted any fashion, that he observed to be most agreeable (275 276). Alcibiades morphed into whatever it took, whether he was around different people or aiding another nation, he made sure to adapt to his surroundings that also helped further his own self interest as well. Earlier in the life, Plutarch wrote that Alcibiades was neither completely virtuous nor vicious and as the life continued this never became clearer. Alcibiades always maintained a neutral position in between vice and virtue. A Doll s House And The Glass Menagerie Symbolism is frequently used in dramatic works to represent abstract ideas and qualities, potentially in the form of people, objects, places, or actions. Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House and Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie each include various symbols to represent the social messages that the authors are trying to convey to the audience. In A Doll s House, the central character, Nora Helmer, can be seen as a symbolherself. The fire escape is used by all of the characters to ordinarily enter and exit the apartment, but it is also a means of escape. Laura Wingfield suffers from a bad leg that makes her incapable of leaving her home. Since it is too difficult for her to use the stairs of the fire escape to leave, she prefers the safety of the apartment. The one time Laura returns from the store and uses the fire escape she trips on the stairs, clearly demonstrating how vulnerable she is in the outside world, and how greatly she is bound to her private world within the apartment. Conversely, Tom Wingfield, Laura s brother, wants nothing more than to follow in his father s footsteps and leave his family behind. He frequently uses the fire escape to go out and smoke, which shows just how much he dislikes life inside of the apartment, and foreshadows his eventual getaway. • 20. While at first blush the protection of cultural diversity... While at first blush the protection of cultural diversity seems like a worthy cause to support for many of us, there are much deeper implications than the prima facie faГ§ade multiculturalism suggests. Instead, there is a deep and growing tension (Okin,1999; p10) between the ideals of feminism and those concerned with the protection of cultural rights. This tension is exacerbated when the protection of those rights safeguards the continuation of practices such as female genital cutting(FGC) in the name of culture and tradition. Every culture is dynamic, complex, and rich in its own ways. However when cultures come together and interact there are inevitably tensions and one such tension is centred on gender and gender norms. In this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For this reason I will again turn to Okin (1999) to describe a claim made in the name of cultural rights and in the context of basically liberal democracies (p10) that minority cultures or ways of life are not sufficiently protected by the practice of ensuring the individual rights of their members, and as a consequence these should also be protected through special group rights or privileges (p11). This claim is at the forefront of many contemporary discussions around cultural group rights and even more specifically the claim that groups, even the illiberal ones that violate their individual members rights, requiring them to conform to group beliefs or norms have the right to be left alone in a liberal society (Okin, 1999; p11). The latter is the claim I will be arguing against using the case study of FGC as an example of why torture is not culture and therefore should not be left alone. In the spirit of clarifying terminology I would also like to defend my use of the term female genital cutting (FGC). While the World Health Organization (2013) uses the commensurable term female genital mutilation (FGM), I feel that the use of the word mutilation carries a strong negative connotation and is needlessly inflammatory, instantly slanting perceptions towards a negative viewpoint. The purpose of Hammurabi s code was to make the punishment so harsh that the individual who committed the crime would never think of committing it again, and if a crime does happened the punishment is arrange to punish the criminal in a manner that they committed the crime. The fascination with IT enabled business innovation comes at a time of significant uncertainty and change as entrenched players and new entrants struggle to define a sustainable proprietary position for success in the turbulent twenty first century. When college was in session, life was basically split into two categories; life in the books, and life outside the books if you will. Scholars needed to focus their attention to the tasks at hand during learning hours. As we know today, the more time you spend studying, the better grades you ll achieve. On the other hand, scholars needed a release from the daily grind of constant academic involvement. This may have included some popular pastimes such as drinking, gambling, and wreaking havoc downtown (nothing a modern student would do). If you were at a university at this time, you would follow the religious standards, just as I could never get out of going to Friday mass at HGA. Nowadays, religion is a touchy topic. It is left to the discretion of the individual whether or not he or she wants to follow the practices and how closely. Church and state are now separated as to avoid major conflicts. Peter Abelard questions the theological teachings of medieval universities and is criticized for it. He says Is God one, or no? At this time scriptures were not to be questioned and were considered to be true. As we know now, science has become a major source of answers in society. Anyway, Abelard brings a whole new dimension to the table when he questions god s existence and some of the things that the church stands for. The whole basis is to use logic and reason to ponder things in a philosophical fashion. This faith vs. reason debate involved Abelard and others who felt that god was in a persons being, or heart. Academia took up most of the students daily and weekly lives. Scholars took full advantage of down time to relax and enjoy themselves. Social life was the second major aspect of a cleric s university experience. As we know, the student body greatly impacts the surrounding town s economy; however social issues arise as well. This theme in this movie is relevant today because many people often feel the need to seek revenge if something bad was inflicted upon them. In hindsight, it is not good to seek revenge because it just made the situation worse, both sides wounded after the brawl. The Weight Reduction Of The Drive Shaft Abstract Almost all automobiles (at least those which correspond to design with rear wheel drive and front engine installation) have transmission shafts. The weight reduction of the drive shaft can have a certain role in the general weight reduction of the vehicle and is a highly desirable goal, if it can be achieved without increase in cost and decrease in quality and reliability. It is possible to achieve design of composite drive shaft with less weight to increase the first natural frequency of the shaft and to decrease the bending stresses using various stacking sequences. By doing the same, maximize the torque transmission and torsional buckling capabilities are also maximized. Key Words: Propeller shaft, Drive shaft, optimization, Composite material, Composite drive shaft design etc. INTRODUCTION The advanced composite materials such as Graphite, Carbon, Kevlar and Glass with suitable resins are widely used because of their high specific strength (strength / density) and high specific modulus (modulus / density). Advanced composite materials seem ideally suited for long, power driver shaft (propeller shaft) applications. Their elastic properties can be tailored to increase the torque they can carry as well as the rotational speed at which they operate. The drive shafts are used in automotive, aircraft and aerospace applications. However, that s not all, since expectations also play a role in how the brain perceives the world. Therefore, it can be said that perception is a combination of sensory information and expectation.
