The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi
As is usual, it was wonderful to
welcome the students back from their
holiday. I have spoken to many and
asked them where they spent the Tet
period. The answers, as I would have
expected, were varied. Some stayed in
Hanoi while some travelled to other
parts of Vietnam. Indeed, it was a
pleasant surprise to see some BIS Hanoi students when
my wife and I were in Da Nang. Other students I spoke
to went overseas to places such as Thailand, Indonesia,
Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, France, UK and the USA. In
relation to this, an important part of our mission
statement’s aide memoire relates to being a Global
Citizen and, in school, we continually explore this
aspect of school life. I have always said to students that
in becoming a Global Citizen we must firstly respect and
understand our own country. Of course travelling to
other countries also helps with developing an
understanding Global Citizenship. It is good that our
students do have the experiences of visiting and,
therefore understanding, their own country and other
countries.
As our students learn the value of becoming a Global
Citizen, BIS Hanoi itself is experiencing a far greater
global exposure. Recently it was announced that we
would be merging with the Nord Anglia Education
Group. There will be many advantages for us as a
school in being part of this truly global group which
now comprises of 35 schools from all over the world.
The school community will, over the next few weeks,
be given further information about the benefits of being
a part of this world wide organisation.
Another group with Global Citizenship at its heart is the
International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). Our
school is currently an IB Candidate school working
towards offering the Diploma Programme in the future. I
am extremely pleased with the progress that we are
making towards this accreditation and am grateful for
the hard work that our staff are undertaking to prepare
for this. I am particularly grateful for the work that Ms
Diane Vaughan has contributed to the IB accreditation
process.
Last, but not least, as our school community is aware,
we recently attained full membership of the Council of
International Schools (CIS) which has a global
membership of around 670 schools. I am extremely
pleased to inform our community that the school will
receive its pre-accreditation visit from CIS in early May.
Not only are our outstanding students working hard to
become Global Citizens but BIS Hanoi is also working
hard towards its responsibility to become a truly Global
school.
I do hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

PRIMARY FOOTBALL - BIS vs GOLD STAR
3. I hope all families had a very pleasant
Tet holiday. Talking to Year 11 and 12 I
know most managed to combine family
obligations with their need to keep
studying during the long holiday. As
you read this they now have 30
teaching days until their IGCSE and AS
examinations begin. They are doing
lots of revision and practise questions in class but they
need to do a great amount of work outside of class to
ensure they receive the grades they truly deserve. As
mentioned in previous newsletters we are emphasising
English as our language for teaching and whole class
discussion. For all of Year 11 and 12 this is especially
true in the last push towards their actual examinations,
as all their examinations are in English.
Issue 22 | 3
From Mr Christopher Short - Head of Secondary
Over the Tet holiday we had the exciting news that we
were going to merge with the Nord Anglia group. There
are a huge number of positive aspects of this for
secondary students at BIS. One of these is the group’s
links with universities around the World including the
US and the UK. Nord Anglia runs several British schools
in the US which send students onto top universities
there and elsewhere. We’re really proud of the
preparation we have made for students going onto
competitive universities and our link through Nord
Anglia now makes this even stronger.
The Year 11 IGCSE Music concert last night was
delightful. Congratulations to all four students for a very
high standard of performances and thank you to Ms
Woolgar for coordinating it all. It was great to see so
many parents, students and staff supporting the event.
BIS FOOTBALL - UNDER 11 VS UNDER 13
4. It was lovely to welcome all the
children back to school on Monday this
week after the Tet holidays. I always
enjoy hearing the stories of where they
have travelled to, family visits, outings,
etc. It is also wonderful to see how
eagerly our children return to school,
ready to resume their learning.
As we start this new half term we have many things to
look forward to. Year 4 has got the term off to a fabulous
start by going on their expedition to Ba Vi on Thursday
and Friday this week. From speaking to the teachers
and looking at the photographs they certainly had a
wonderful time filled with many new and exciting
experiences. It is a trip that will be remembered for
many years to come by all who went on it.
Next week is International Week; a week which I can
honestly say is one of my favourites of the school year.
Each year group has selected a country which they will
focus on through a range of activities, from trying out
the language, to sampling some typical food and drink,
learning some facts relating to the history and
geography, enjoying the music, dance, etc.; the list goes
on. The week will culminate on Friday with a special
celebration assembly in the morning to which parents
are most welcome, and an International Fair later in the
day. Friday is also our dressing up day, when we hope
all children will come to school dressed to represent
their country.

It is recommended that people should have 60
minutes of moderate to intensive activity each
day. Physical activity, Sport and Physical
Education can improve cognitive and
educational performance of students at school
as well as aiding physiological, skill and social
development.
Secondary PE at BIS has developed over the last year and
students look forward to their weekly lessons. In secondary,
students have two core PE lessons weekly. The IGCSE students
have 3 theory lessons and 1 practical lesson a week.
It was a very busy time for the department which had it’s first
IGCSE students doing their final practical assessment for their
IGCSE qualification last month. It was great to see how the
students have developed over the last two years. We hope that
they keep their focus for their final theory paper at the end of the year. With core PE developing the department is
very excited in seeing the subject being more accessible for more students in the future.
Secondary PE has focused during the year in using technology in
the classroom. Students have the chance to see themselves with
instant feedback using various devices during lessons. Concepts
students are taught are: Understanding Games and team sports;
Health related fitness; Dance; Gymnastics and Swimming and
students are refining their skills in the various areas. Developing
a game, Tchouckball and Outdoor Education have been
introduced this year in Key stage 3.
In Key stage 4 and 5 students have the chance to select their
activities during the year. Options of team sport or individual sports development; Swimming, and Racket activities
are selected in the beginning of the year. In year 12 the focus is on giving students various ways in being active and
healthy in the future. Students have the opportunity to explore various roles in the sporting community by learning
the role of the coach and the official.
Have an active weekend.
