This document provides instructions for signing up for a Twitter account and beginning to use Twitter. It first defines some key Twitter terms like tweets, retweets, following, followers, and direct messages. It then lists the steps to sign up, which includes providing a name, email, password, and choosing a username. • A tweet is what you write in the ‘What’s happening?’ bar. Most articles/blogs contain
‘Tweet this’ buttons that you can use to automatically share what you’re reading.
• To retweet is to repost a someone else’s tweet.
• To follow someone is to subscribe to their posts.
• People & companies following you are called followers.
• A direct message (DM) is a private message to you.
Sign Up
1. Go to http://twitter.com and find the sign up box, or go directly to
https://twitter.com/signup.
2. Enter your name, your email address, and a password. Click Sign up
for Twitter.
3. On the next page, select a username – type your own or choose the one
suggested. Usernames must be fewer than 15 characters. Your username
forms the Url of your Twitter profile page.
4. Double-check your name, email address, password, and username.
5. Click Create my account.
6. Fill out your profile completely. Include photo and short bio
Start following and tweeting
1. After signing up, follow accounts that interest you to create a customized
stream of information on your homepage. Following means you'll get that
user's Tweets on your Twitter homepage. You can unfollow anyone later
on.
2. You get the most from Twitter with daily engagement
3. Read posts of those you follow
4. Share (re-tweet) posts you find valuable
5. Post original tweets including links to articles you find interesting
6. Respond to Direct Messages as you do with emails.
