•I want the opening two minutes of my film to have non-diegetic sounds, I want it to
have music in the background and also the main characters talking through out the
opening scene who sets the setting

•Furthermore i have decided to create my first two minutes of my film on a book

Twilight
The film I chose to look at is twilight, I want to look at it in to more detail as my final
film as I think the opening is very effective on the audience by the way it uses non-
diagetic sound in the way i want to, and it has also adapted it from a well known
book.
ABOUT TWILIGHT
Twilight was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and written by Melissa Rosenberg. It
focuses on the development of a personal relationship between human teenager and
vampire and the subsequent efforts of Edward and his family to keep Bella safe from a
separate group of hostile vampires.
The film was released theatrically starting on November 21, 2008. It grossed $35.7
million on its opening day,[and has come to gross $408.9 million worldwide. The DVD
was released on March 21, 2009 and grossed an additional $181 million from sales.
SETTING AND CHARACTERS
SETTING
We can tell by watching the opening two minutes of the film Twilight that the genre of
the film is mysterious as its extremely dark and with no characters shown in the first
minute. The girl talking, we consider to be the main character who is talking about her
death as we are watching a small animal run through a forest, makes us feel that this
film could be set around a forest.

CHARACTERS
We don’t seethe girl who is talking un till about a minute in to the film, and still then
she is talking about the negative things in her life, which’s gives us as the audience the
impression that she’s a shy girl who keeps herself to herself and isn't’ interested in a lot
of things most teenagers in America of that age would be in to.
SOUND AND MUSIC
NON-DIEGETIC

• The starting of the film uses quick sounds as we watch a small animal run through
the forest, the sounds create us to feel as though the animal is in danger and as the
sounds get quicker it cause us to feel more emotion for the animal as we know that
its getting closer to being killed. They use this effect to create the audience to have
the same emotion as the animal

• It also has a girl narrating and setting the first two minutes of the film, the way she
talks and what she talks about it very mysterious and fantasy, this creates us as the
audience to work out the genre of the film
FONTS AND CREDITS
In the opening scenes of the film twilight, when watching the first two minutes
there are no credits at all. I think this is because they want the audience to be
completely engaged and listening to what the girl is saying. This make its more
dramatic and connects with the audience more through the opening of it.
CAMERA ANGLES
          Establishment Shot –
          Most films have an
          establishment shot at the
start of all films to show the
          setting which give the
          audience an idea about the
          film and what its like.

          Close Up Shot –
The close up shot of her face
          shows the emotion that
          she’s going through. With
          Bella, the audiences think
she’s sad and shy from the
close up’s it shows of her at
          the start of the film
MISE-EN-SCENE
Lighting – The lighting is natural and by this we can tell that the film is meant to be
realistic and professional. Its also looks like its been filmed and edited so its more of a
dark film, which shows us as an audience the genre.

Props – We don’t see many props in the first two minutes of the film, this shows that
the genre of the film could be a mystery/fantasy film and they dont’ want to give to
much away about the genre.

Costumes – The costumes that the characters are wearing that we see the in this
two minutes are just normal clothes showing us that there just average people.
