EVALUATION 7:
LOOKING BACK ONTHE PRELIMINARYTASK (THE
CONTINUITY EDITINGTASK) WHAT DOYOU FEELYOU HAVE
LEARNT INTHE PROGRESSION FROM ITTO FULL PRODUCT?
The Prelim task
For the prelim task we had to create a short video consisting of a minimum of 30 seconds.
The prelim had consist and show that we could use continuity editing. We were asked to
use shots in particular such as:
■ 180 degree rule
■ Shot reverse shot
■ Match on action
We managed to use the 180 degree rule very successfully as when we filmed two
characters having a conversation we managed to stay on the same side when filming the
characters because otherwise it would have looked like the characters had swapped
places. We also used shot reverse shot very well, we used this shot to show a conversation
between the two characters.
Mistakes and what we learnt from doing
the prelim task
Mistakes:
■ We did in fact film the prelim video 12 seconds to short, we tried to space out the shots
as long as possible. However it still planned out to be too short.
■ During the conversation the editing is a bit ‘choppy,’ as it was our first time editing we
were pretty new on how to do it but for beginners its ok.
What we have learnt:
From doing this task we learnt that in future we need to have as many shots as possible to
fill the amount of time we need to film for and to make our editing a lot smoother which
we will be able to do with practice.
From watching our Preliminary then our final cut
of our thriller, how have we progressed?
The regards to our thriller we feel we have progressed a lot since we filmed our preliminary video:
■ Our ideas as to what our film was going to be based on, were quite interesting however with a
lot of planning and changes that were made this allowed us to film our thriller without the need
for any scenes to be re-shot.
■ Comparing our prelim to our thriller video our locations, we feel they are a lot more interesting
and they suit the genre of our film, we used a very quite street and one of the group members
houses and a dark corridor behind the stage at our school, whereas in the preliminary we just
used a flight of stairs and the cafeteria.
■ I the preliminary video the only prop used was an iPhone, and for our thriller we didn’t use
many props either, the only props we used was a torch so that the victim could see in the dark,
which showed the characters struggle to see, another prop we used was a belt, this was used by
the kidnapper to shock the audience and make them question what he might do with it and the
last prop we used was a plank of wood which was used to make a loud sound.
Continued….
■ In the preliminary video we just wore the clothes we had on that day, whereas for the
thriller we tried to wear the least amount of clothing, to show the situation that the
possessions of the characters which had been kidnapped had been taken from them.To
show this Daisy’s character wore black ripped jeans and a black long-sleeved top with no
shoes, Lara’s character wore a black vest top and black leggings and no shoes and Kalum’s
character wore a black t-shirt, black jeans, trainers and a black coat.
■ In our thriller we used a soundtrack that played throughout the duration of it, which gave
the opening scene the creepy and eerie effect that we wanted, whereas in the preliminary
video we didn’t use sound, the only sound there was, was dialogue which was spoke by the
characters in the video.
■ Our editing was a lot smooth than is was in the preliminary task, this was probably because
we had time to practise and better knowledge of how to edit things..
■ We used a wide variety of shots in our thriller as well, such as an establishing shot to show
the location, tracking shots to follow the character, high angle shot to make the camera
look like a security camera etc.
Overall…
As a group we are all very happy with our thriller. The fact that we had to change quite a
bit allowed us to come up with something even better, and there would be no other
changes we would make to our thriller now.We are particularly proud of ourselves as we
actually got involved with the acting side of it and participated in the film. The only
problem that we faced was the darkness in the corridor behind the stage, so that the
characters and setting could be seen in the film we used a torch as a prop which disguised
the fact that it was there to give us light (daisy’s character picked it up so she could see
where she was going the corridor) and we also used the flashlights on our phones to hold
by the camera so that the characters could be seen.
