During the making of our title sequence we used a variety of techniques to makes sure we
included everything we can to attract and address our audience. The main 4 technical
element we focused on was the sound, camerawork, editing and the mise -en scene.
To make it more clear to us as to how we would attract our audience further we made a
survey and asked potential target audience what they enjoy seeing and what they'd like to
see in our title sequence. From this we found out that most of them really liked the idea of
someone being captured and having the antagonist who is the possessed demon.
We also came up with some ideas through the inspiration of other existing horror films such
as โ€˜โ€™Insidiousโ€™โ€™ and โ€˜โ€™The Ringโ€™โ€™
once we got the general idea of what our title sequence would look like we started filming
and editing the final product. Through out the editing sessions we had a few rough cuts
which we presented to a couple of students in our class to gain feedback.
these included the following:
- the title sequence is dragged out too long
-bags and coats are noticed in the background of most shots
-sound doesn't go too well with the scene
-the shots being too short
-the demon is shown too early
-good production logo
-texts and effects are great
we took into account all this feedback to attract the audience in the best ways possible.
Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?
SOUND
we used various types of dietetic and non-diegetic sound throughout the whole title
sequence. Dietetic sound include the end scene where you hear a stick snap which
leads on to the jump scare. we chose to use this sound as it was more realistic to
location we where in. As well as that we were trying to make it sound believable that
someone has walked towards the protagonist. we have used more non-diegetic
sounds as we believed that our audience would be more attracted to the sounds that
are not in the narrative. we begin with some eerie slow sound to give it a ghostly
atmosphere which introduces our opening scene. i think this is effective as it leads
the audience on and invites the viewer to watch more. we use the same sound but
increase the volume between scene to heighten the sensation of fear which will also
keep the audience engaged. Another use of non diegetic sound we have included is a
slightly toned down sound of a child's laugh echoing mid way through the sequence.
This will instantly attract the audience as it will create more suspense about whoโ€™s
voice it is and where the sound is coming from. Throughout the whole sequence we
add ominous and monotone sounds to keep the audience interested. At the end,
once the jump scare appears, the sound suddenly becomes louder then stops
instantly to let the audience endure what theyโ€™ve just watched.
CAMERA WORK
We have created several different camera shots in order to get the audience involved. Although
we had difficulties with finding the best shots as we only had a few of each we still managed to
put it together.
We used a POV when the victim is on the ground tied to the tree. The shot appears straight
when he opens his eyes. This is effective as it will put the audience in the characters position. In
allows the audience to understand and feel what the character is feeling at that point.
There is also another POV shot where the camera points from a different angle coming away
from the tree. This keeps the audience engaged and questioning whatโ€™s behind there and who it
could be.
Mid way through, we use an extreme long shot showing the victim huddled up and tied up to
the tree. The extreme long shot allows the audience to see everything around him, in this case,
it emphasises the boy being alone and isolated possibly in danger. This keeps the audience
questioning how he got there and why heโ€™s there.
The use of a close-up shot finally reveals the victims bruised and bloody face. Here the audience
can see from the close up the distress the character is in. You can see the facial expressions of
the character as heโ€™s face is beat up which again leaves the audience interested and wondering
what happened.
we took snippets with both the protagonist and antagonist walking by, this will create
anticipation within the audience wanting to know who and what that was.
The demon is finally revealed in the end through the use of a close up shot. This is effective for a
jump scare as its really sudden and unexpected which will instantly terrify the audience.
EDTING
We have used several editing techniques in order to attract our audience.
We used continuity editing towards the end , where we see short clips of the demon
walking by the victim in a far distance. We used this editing technique as it engages the
audience with the narrative and makes the representation look real. This then seamlessly
leads to the jump scare.
We added dark lighting throughout the whole sequence to make the scenes seem more
spooky. This makes the audience feel like something bad is going to happen as it creates a
scary and deadly atmosphere. Due to this, they will continue to watch the opening
sequence till the end to see what happens next.
When the black screens appears between each scene and fades out, starting from when
the victim wakes up, it emphasises his unconsciousness and how heโ€™s feeling. This is
effective to the audience as they are, in a way put in the characters position.
For similar reasons, we also use a blurry effect on a POV shot where we see what the
character seeโ€™s. We used the blurry effect to emphasise what the character is feeling. This
engages the audience as its gives the audience a perspective.
The use of sound throughout the title sequence really emphases and makes each scene
realistic and believable to the audience.
MISE EN SCENE
For the location we used the forests which was perfect for our storyline. Forests are
known to be really creepy and dangerous, especially in the dark. Therefore, using this
location for this particular story line of a captured teenage boy and a possessed
demon works perfectly together. This is effective as it will make the whole sequence
very believable and realistic to the audience.
This will also make it engaging, making them want to watch till the end to see what
happens. Throughout the title sequence they could be questioning whoโ€™s around as
its very dark and empty with just the protagonist tied to the tree. Is will question the
audience a lot. Anything could appear at any time from any position which will really
fear the audience.

Q 5

  • 1. During the making of our title sequence we used a variety of techniques to makes sure we included everything we can to attract and address our audience. The main 4 technical element we focused on was the sound, camerawork, editing and the mise -en scene. To make it more clear to us as to how we would attract our audience further we made a survey and asked potential target audience what they enjoy seeing and what they'd like to see in our title sequence. From this we found out that most of them really liked the idea of someone being captured and having the antagonist who is the possessed demon. We also came up with some ideas through the inspiration of other existing horror films such as โ€˜โ€™Insidiousโ€™โ€™ and โ€˜โ€™The Ringโ€™โ€™ once we got the general idea of what our title sequence would look like we started filming and editing the final product. Through out the editing sessions we had a few rough cuts which we presented to a couple of students in our class to gain feedback. these included the following: - the title sequence is dragged out too long -bags and coats are noticed in the background of most shots -sound doesn't go too well with the scene -the shots being too short -the demon is shown too early -good production logo -texts and effects are great we took into account all this feedback to attract the audience in the best ways possible. Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?
  • 2. SOUND we used various types of dietetic and non-diegetic sound throughout the whole title sequence. Dietetic sound include the end scene where you hear a stick snap which leads on to the jump scare. we chose to use this sound as it was more realistic to location we where in. As well as that we were trying to make it sound believable that someone has walked towards the protagonist. we have used more non-diegetic sounds as we believed that our audience would be more attracted to the sounds that are not in the narrative. we begin with some eerie slow sound to give it a ghostly atmosphere which introduces our opening scene. i think this is effective as it leads the audience on and invites the viewer to watch more. we use the same sound but increase the volume between scene to heighten the sensation of fear which will also keep the audience engaged. Another use of non diegetic sound we have included is a slightly toned down sound of a child's laugh echoing mid way through the sequence. This will instantly attract the audience as it will create more suspense about whoโ€™s voice it is and where the sound is coming from. Throughout the whole sequence we add ominous and monotone sounds to keep the audience interested. At the end, once the jump scare appears, the sound suddenly becomes louder then stops instantly to let the audience endure what theyโ€™ve just watched.
  • 3. CAMERA WORK We have created several different camera shots in order to get the audience involved. Although we had difficulties with finding the best shots as we only had a few of each we still managed to put it together. We used a POV when the victim is on the ground tied to the tree. The shot appears straight when he opens his eyes. This is effective as it will put the audience in the characters position. In allows the audience to understand and feel what the character is feeling at that point. There is also another POV shot where the camera points from a different angle coming away from the tree. This keeps the audience engaged and questioning whatโ€™s behind there and who it could be. Mid way through, we use an extreme long shot showing the victim huddled up and tied up to the tree. The extreme long shot allows the audience to see everything around him, in this case, it emphasises the boy being alone and isolated possibly in danger. This keeps the audience questioning how he got there and why heโ€™s there. The use of a close-up shot finally reveals the victims bruised and bloody face. Here the audience can see from the close up the distress the character is in. You can see the facial expressions of the character as heโ€™s face is beat up which again leaves the audience interested and wondering what happened. we took snippets with both the protagonist and antagonist walking by, this will create anticipation within the audience wanting to know who and what that was. The demon is finally revealed in the end through the use of a close up shot. This is effective for a jump scare as its really sudden and unexpected which will instantly terrify the audience.
  • 4. EDTING We have used several editing techniques in order to attract our audience. We used continuity editing towards the end , where we see short clips of the demon walking by the victim in a far distance. We used this editing technique as it engages the audience with the narrative and makes the representation look real. This then seamlessly leads to the jump scare. We added dark lighting throughout the whole sequence to make the scenes seem more spooky. This makes the audience feel like something bad is going to happen as it creates a scary and deadly atmosphere. Due to this, they will continue to watch the opening sequence till the end to see what happens next. When the black screens appears between each scene and fades out, starting from when the victim wakes up, it emphasises his unconsciousness and how heโ€™s feeling. This is effective to the audience as they are, in a way put in the characters position. For similar reasons, we also use a blurry effect on a POV shot where we see what the character seeโ€™s. We used the blurry effect to emphasise what the character is feeling. This engages the audience as its gives the audience a perspective. The use of sound throughout the title sequence really emphases and makes each scene realistic and believable to the audience.
  • 5. MISE EN SCENE For the location we used the forests which was perfect for our storyline. Forests are known to be really creepy and dangerous, especially in the dark. Therefore, using this location for this particular story line of a captured teenage boy and a possessed demon works perfectly together. This is effective as it will make the whole sequence very believable and realistic to the audience. This will also make it engaging, making them want to watch till the end to see what happens. Throughout the title sequence they could be questioning whoโ€™s around as its very dark and empty with just the protagonist tied to the tree. Is will question the audience a lot. Anything could appear at any time from any position which will really fear the audience.
