In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
Title of the film
For the title of our thriller we decided to
put it towards the end of the opening of
the thriller. We done this because wanted
to leave the audience with the film title to
make sure they know what is the title so
they can tell others and get it out there. In
the opening you are shown the title after a
dramatic opening so this almost allows the
audience to relax after all the tension.
Title font and style
The title font we have used is a white text on a
black background. We have done this as it is
clear due to it being in capitals and on the black
background. In our opening we found it best to
cut the cinematic opening shots of the forest
back and fourth to the titles in this style. We
done this because it adds a professional effect
and breaks up the long cinematic locations
shots. In our title sequence we have included
the production company name, actors names
and the director.
Setting and location
This shot sets the audience up for where majority of
the opening is set in. we chose to set it in a forest as it
is typical for thrillers to have scenes in a dark cold
forest. We have used multiple shots in the forest to
allow the audience to understand where it is set. In
this shot we have used a close up on a blue bell to add
a professional look to our film. Our location does
conform to a thriller expectation as it is isolated and
under the radar away from the normality of society.
Costume and props
We have used this prop of a phone and focused on
the aspect of an unknown phone call. We used
fears that the audience could relate to because
everyone had had a call from an unknown number
before. When receiving a call from and unknown
number you don’t know what to expect. We have
also used a point of view shot to allow the
audience to see through the eyes of Anna, the girl
who’s friend is missing
Camera work and editing
Our main aim for our thriller to create cinematic
shots that tease the audience and leave them on the
edge of there seat. The cold blue lighting emphasises
the tension in the scene as the audience do not know
who's hand it is and whether it is the girl we
previously see in the missing poster. We used lots of
shots like this that leave the audience questioning
what would happen next.
Storyline and how the opening sets it up
This sets up the story line as it is based on isolation and
how being on your own can be threatening. As the
character on the left finds the character on the right, it
targets the audiences fears as they believe this would
be something that never happens to them – but
abduction happens worldwide to innocent people. I
believe this shot captures the contrast between nature
and how it is typically beautiful and a tragedy that we
see in the next scene.
Genre and how the opening suggests it
This shot suggest this is a thriller film as she is shocked.
This is what we would want the audience to react like. The
close up shot targets her fears and is something the
audience can relate too. We was quite lucky to have a high
definition camera as it helped us convey the emotions of
the scene better to support the genre, but this could have
also been done on a basic camera – the close up is the
main effective element.
How the characters are introduced
The first character we are introduced to is a
girl on the phone. The film starts at a
disequilibrium which sets the scene of a
thriller film as she receives a call from an
unknown number. The first female character
introduced seems distressed as she paces
around an isolated location, the forest. This
puts the character at threat as she is on her
own receiving calls from another unknown
character.
