This document discusses how to identify regional identity in TV drama. It explains that regional identity is rooted in where characters live as shown through setting, accents, dialogue, props, costumes and other factors. It tasks researching stereotypes of regions like Northern and Southern England, Scotland, Wales, and cities/areas and identifying them based on dialogue, clothing, location, props, costumes, makeup and class. Students are asked to analyze clips showing how they represent regional identity through Point-Evidence-Explanation paragraphs.

This is the theory revision I created for my A2 Media group a couple of years ago. There is some general narrative theory, Media theory Laura Mulvey etc and Racial Representation theory, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, bell hooks etc. This was based on Media and Collective Identity focusing on the representation of black culture in British Film and American Music Videos.

• How can you identify them? Consider the following:
– Dialogue/ dialect
– Clothing
– Location/setting
– Props
– Costume
– Make-up
– Class/status
• Also choose an image of stereotypical character that epitomises this regional
identity
