Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

Editor's Notes

  • #2 “Many people will have the same idea as you, few, if any, will run with that idea.” “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” — Paulo Coelho from The Alchemist (Brenden Mulligan, Cluster) “Don’t believe everything you think.” – Dr. Wayne Dyer (Joe Greenstein, Flixster, RottenTomatoes) “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.” — Michael Jordan “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.” — Ben Franklin (Joshua Forman, Inkling)
  • #4 How we perceive, or frame an obstacle is either a source of strength or a source of weakness. Resist temptation or excitement. We chose to react to how we feel. We can control our reaction. The most important pause. The little man and the elephant. The world is what it is, change is up to us. How we react to obstacles determine how successful we will be in overcoming them – or possibly thriving because of them. We must try to be objective; to control our emotions; to choose to see good in a situation; to steady our nerves; to ignore what disturbs or limits others; to place things in perspective; to revert to the present moment; to focus on what we can control. This is how we see the opportunity within the obstacle. It does not happen on its own. It is a process – one that results from self-discipline and logic. That logic is available to you. All you have to do is deploy it.

  • #7 When dealt a bad hand – do you fold? Play it for all you have? Do you run away from it? Run to it? Or worse yet, do nothing? This is the test of character which says everything about us. We have more strength than we realize. Don’t quit.
  • #9 Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Apply yourself. Exhale, take stock, and ACT.
  • #10 What happens when we do nothing. A body at rest, stays at rest; a body in motion, stays in motion See task as an adventure, as a game. Million reasons why we cannot move –then all obstacles loom large. Those who attack problems win.
  • #11 A thousand nos Persistence is an asset Forces us to try something new – source of innovation Thomas Edison Turn over options in mind. Just know that one will work. Raising money from VCs – visit 60. A thousand nos.

  • #14 Stop look for angels, begin looking for angles When someone asks how are you doing, “I am moving forward.”
  • #15 Embrace failure, it is a teacher What is defeat? Nothing but education. Nothing but the first steps to something greater. Meet customers for first time in the market place. Failure is an asset if you are truly trying to improve something, or do something new What went wrong? What can be improved? What am I missing? What is that I don’t know? Great success stories – preceded by epic failures. Failure does hurt – it is what it is…embrace it. World is telling you something. Lessons only come hard if you are deaf to them.
