Education in Technology is a critical aspect of modern teaching and learning as such this presentation delves into the benefits and disadvantages of combining technological approaches and ICT's in Education.
2. WHOAMI?
I AM A THIRD-YEAR EDUCATION STUDENT AT
THE UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG
SPECIALIZING IN ICT EDUCATION.
I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT LEARNING
TECHNOLOGIES ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY CAN
BE USED TO CREATE MEANINGFUL
ENGAGEMENT IN THE CLASSROOM.
3. • The application and combination of techological devices and digital means of
teaching with non-digital methods of teaching is key in understanding the impact
that technology has on education.
• The word ‘technology’ comes from the Greek word techne which means craft or
art (Jasareno, 2014)
• Educational technology specifically pertains ‘to the art of responding to our
educational needs’ that may arise in an educational setting (Jasareno, 2014)
• It can be concluded that educational technology is the application of digital tools
to better facilitate learning in an educational setting.

4. ROLEOF
TECHNOLOGYIN
LEARNING
Engagement
Technology creates a
new dimension of
interaction between
learners and content,
like video content.
Mode of
Instruction
The digital landscape
allows for distance
learning and external
professional expertise
on subject matter.

5. • It has been poven that digital ‘tools support knowledge construction: for
representing learners’ ideas, understandings and beliefs for producing organized,
multimedia knowledge bases’ that comprise of information from various sources.
(Jasareno, 2014)
• The application and combination of technological devices and digital tools with
‘old school’ methods of teaching like talk-and-chalk allows for a greater dimension
of interaction with the content of a lesson. E.g.A math lesson that seeks to
explore the concept of the Pythagorean theorem, the educator can draw and
explain on a chalkboard, while also leverage a video showing the relationship
between the square of each side of a right-angle triangle.

6. FURTHERBENEFITSOF
TECHNOLOGYIN
EDUCATION
• Other benefits include:
• Globalization: ‘When schools in different parts of the state ,
students can “meet" their counterparts through video
conferencing without leaving the classroom.’ (Inder, 2014)
• Geographical Limitations are not an issue as Inder finds
that ‘with the introduction of online degree programs there
is hardly any need of being present physically in the
classroom’ (Inder, 2014). It is entirely possible for remote
learning to occur as a result of implementing technology in
education.

7. THEROLEOFICT’SINEDUCATION
page 7
• ICT stands for: Information CommunicationTechnology
• The integration of communication technologies especially online
tools such as social media and online learning platforms is a
powerful tool to leverage in an educational setting.
• Laakso finds that online tools such as Kahoot can be engaging, easy
to use and highly customisable when she states that ‘There are
millions of public quizzes you can use as they are or duplicate and
edit’ for your own specified educational content (Laakso, 2015)
8. AdvantagesofimplementingICT’sineducation
ICT’s offer a greater range of tools and opportunities to learners as opposed to traditional education
methods.
Instruction
Teachers can conduct
distance learning via live
sessions, or viaYoutube
and provide knowledge and
information to learners
without being physically
present.
Learners can work in teams
to deconstruct topics
teachers can make use of
platforms like MSTeams to
promote collaborative
learning amongst students.
Review
The ubiquitous nature of
online learning allows for
learners to access information
anywhere at anytime, thereby
allowing learners to review
the content whenever they
need to.

9. DisadvantagesofICT’s
When it comes to implementing technology in education there are several
cons to its integration
• Firstly the ’use of technology in education is a problematic premise
because it [generates] a heated debate on whether it helps or hinders
learning’ with its reliance on network connectivity and electricity
(Aynnarcena, 2014).
• It is further noted that teachers may become overly reliant on
technological tools and result in overuse which ‘takes away learning
over time’ (Aynnarcena, 2014)
• The last point mentioned by Aynnarcena is the formation of a ‘game
mentality’ (Aynnarcena, 2014).This is the notion that learners take for
granted the opportunities afforded by ICT’s, and see it as a ‘game’

• Technology can be effectively integrated into education if the
appropriate measures are put into place to mitigate the
disadvantages associated with the implementation of ICT in
education.
• The importance of technology in education cannot be overstated as
it ‘breaks the mundane learning cycle, [resulting] in learning
[becoming] more interesting’ (Casper, 2010). It allows for a wider
range of content and different points of view on classroom content.
• All school subjects can be improved by allowing easy access to
review classroom lessons via recorded lessons, which is afforded by
the use of ICT’s and online platforms that allow for the storage of
video lessons, presentations and lesson notes.
