Alexander Shcherbakov is a software engineer at DSR working on the team at Evernym. He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics and is one of the maintainers of Hyperledger Indy and Hyperledger Plenum. In this presentation, he will explain the value of a decentralized ledger in an SSI ecosystem and examine Hyperledger Indy, which is the distributed ledger that has been powering the Sovrin Network for more than two years.
Our identities have to be trusted to be useful. When we meet strangers, we decide how much we trust them by what they tell us, and whether a trusted third party will vouch for them. In traditional identity systems, the trusted third party knows everything about everyone in the ecosystem. In Self-Sovereign Identity systems, we rely on a decentralized ledger to privately validate that the identity claims do in fact come from a trusted issuer.
Indy’s blockchain implementation is Plenum, which is a general purpose, public-permissioned, BFT distributed ledger. The presentation takes a technical look at the architecture, cryptography, transactions, data structures, and storage of the ledger including auditability, request processing, catch-up procedure, and support for custom plugins and custom transactions.

(DRAMBORA). After considering how the ideas of risk and trust might affect digital repositories, the DRAMBORA methodology is applied using two practical exercises. DRAMBORA can also be applied using an interactive Web-based version of the tool, and the presentation provides an illustrated guided tour of this version of the tool. The presentation was given as part of the final module of a 5-module course on digital preservation tools for repository managers, presented by the JISC KeepIt project. Concluding by comparing DRAMBORA with DAF, the Data Asset Framework, also produced by the DCC, brings the KeepIt course effectively full circle, as the course began in module 1 with DAF. It illustrates the research activity related to the CASPAR project with specific reference to the authenticity and the need and the possibility to ensure continuity among international projects and their results. CNI 2018: A Research Object Authoring Tool for the Data CommonsAnita de Waard

Such projects include community building projects or coordination actions such as ERPANET, Delos2, and Digital Preservation Europe (DPE), but also research projects such as Planets, CASPAR, Shaman, Protage. In December 2009 a new call for digital preservation will be closed, so new projects may start in 2010.
One result of all these projects and all the work done is that there is a growing community involved, more organizations and people are aware of the issues, definitely has enhanced the collaboration amongst institutions and universities in Europe, and with the last research projects some potential practical solutions are emerging that could be applied by institutions. How it all will work out in the end is still one of the big questions. For one thing it may have helped to create a good foundation for further collaboration, perhaps even without funding from the European Commission.
This presentation will provide a brief overview of the main results of some of these projects, especially Planets, and what issues they try to resolve, and a brief outlook on possible future developments.
The MOD solution is a repository created by the MAPPA Lab at the University of Pisa to preserve Italian archaeological open data. The MOD acquires, develops, manages, and disseminates archaeological data and resources using an Open Source platform. It aims to comply with the ISO standard for Open Archival Information Systems to ensure long-term preservation of data through strategies like normalization, version migration, and refreshment of storage media.

Digital preservation involves maintaining access to digital content over time. It faces technical challenges due to hardware and software obsolescence and conceptual challenges in defining digital objects and their significant properties. Organizational challenges include developing sustainable business models, policies, and collaboration between stakeholders to address the scale of digital content. Audit frameworks help assess repositories, while tools characterize formats and support preservation planning.

nestor is a German cooperative project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research to establish expertise and support long-term preservation of digital resources. It aims to raise awareness, trigger synergies between ongoing activities in Germany, and establish standards and best practices. nestor has partner institutions from libraries, archives, and museums, and has working groups focused on topics like trusted repositories, media formats, and standardization. It provides training, publications, and collaborates with other international projects.
Metadata can play a vital role in enabling the effective management, discovery, and re-usability of digital information. Digital preservation metadata provides provenance information, supports and documents preservation activity, identifies technical features, and aids in verifying the authenticity of a digital object.
