This presentation, the first of six parts on the practical analysis of significant properties of digital objects, introduces the concepts. The topic concerns the characteristics of digital objects that must be preserved over time in order to ensure the continued accessibility, usability, and meaning of the objects. The presentation was given as part of module 3 of a 5-module course on digital preservation tools for repository managers, presented by the JISC KeepIt project. Presented at DocTrain East 2007 by Joe Gelb, Suite Solutions -- Designing, building and maintaining a coherent information architecture is critical to proper planning, creation, management and delivery of documentation and training content. This is especially true when your content is based on a modular or topic-based model such as DITA and SCORM or if you are migrating to such a model. But where to start? Terms such as taxonomy, semantics, and ontology can be intimidating, and recognized standards like RDF, OWL, Topic Maps (XTM) and SKOS seem so abstract. This pragmatic workshop will provide an overview of the standards and concepts, and a chance to use them hands-on to turn the abstract into tangible skills. We will demonstrate how a well-designed information architecture facilitates reuse and how the information model is integrally connected to conditional and multi-purpose publishing. We will introduce an innovative, comprehensive methodology for information modeling and content development called SOTA Solution Oriented Topic Architecture. SOTA does not aim to be yet another new standard, but rather a concrete methodology backed up with open-source and accessible tools for using existing standards. We will demonstrate ֖and practice—hands-on—how this powerful methodology can help you organize and express information, determine which content actually needs to be created or updated, and build documentation and training deliverables from your content based on the rules you define. This workshop is essential for successfully implementing topic models like DITA and SCORM, multi-purpose conditional publishing, and successfully facilitating content reuse.

Metadata can play a vital role in enabling the effective management, discovery, and re-usability of digital information. Digital preservation metadata provides provenance information, supports and documents preservation activity, identifies technical features, and aids in verifying the authenticity of a digital object. This presentation gives and introduction to Digital preservation matadata and preservation metada in practise. Presentation was delivered during the joint DPE/Planets/CAPAR/nestor training event, ‘The Preservation challenge: basic concepts and practical applications’ (Barcelona, March 2009)

During the last decade several projects with respect to digital preservation have been funded in Europe by the European Commission and have delivered interesting results. Such projects include community building projects or coordination actions such as ERPANET, Delos2, and Digital Preservation Europe (DPE), but also research projects such as Planets, CASPAR, Shaman, Protage. In December 2009 a new call for digital preservation will be closed, so new projects may start in 2010. One result of all these projects and all the work done is that there is a growing community involved, more organizations and people are aware of the issues, definitely has enhanced the collaboration amongst institutions and universities in Europe, and with the last research projects some potential practical solutions are emerging that could be applied by institutions. How it all will work out in the end is still one of the big questions. For one thing it may have helped to create a good foundation for further collaboration, perhaps even without funding from the European Commission. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the main results of some of these projects, especially Planets, and what issues they try to resolve, and a brief outlook on possible future developments.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English.
