Tropical rainforests have an average temperature between 20-35°C and receive heavy rainfall between 200-400cm annually. Over 50% of all life exists in these forests, which only take up 2% of the earth's surface. The forests grow on acidic, nutrient-poor soils and have a structure with multiple layers - a forest floor, understory, and canopy or overstory. Fig trees are crucial to the forests as they provide a food source for birds and mammals through their fruits, and army ants that travel across the forest floor in swarms are followed by birds eating the debris left behind.

4th Period Temperate Rain Forest
A temperate rainforest is a forest that loses its leaves in the fall and has some of the largest trees in the world. It is home to plants like stinging nettle, salmonberry, Indian paintbrush, and Douglas fir. Common animals include Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, cougar, black bear, river otter, Douglas squirrel, jumping mouse, and shrew. The Douglas squirrel's diet consists of nuts and green cones, while the Olympic marmot hibernates in winter and eats roots and various plants depending on the season. Humans are negatively impacting temperate rainforests by clearing the land for housing, agriculture, and industry, destroying animal habitats.
The Forest Ecosystem and its Classification

Forests can be divided into layers like the emergent layer, canopy, understory, and forest floor. Within a forest, there are producers, consumers, and decomposers. Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity in 1896 almost by accident. While experimenting with uranium salts and their effect on photographic plates, he discovered that the plates were exposed even when not in direct sunlight, showing that uranium emitted radiation without an external energy source. This led to his discovery of radioactivity, the spontaneous emission of radiation by a material without external energy. The Neshaminy Creek

The French and Indian War
