A chemical change occurs when new substances are produced with new chemical properties, like a tree burning which creates carbon and ash. A physical change only alters the size or shape of a substance, such as glass breaking, where the substance remains the same even though it appears different. Chemical and physical changes can be distinguished by whether new substances are formed.
