Transitions Essays
Crafting an essay on the subject of "Transitions Essays" can be both challenging and rewarding.
The difficulty lies in navigating the intricate terrain of transitions within the context of an essay.
The task involves seamlessly connecting ideas, paragraphs, and sections to ensure a smooth flow
of thought.
To begin with, one must possess a deep understanding of the importance of transitions in the
overall coherence of an essay. This involves grasping the nuances of transitional words, phrases,
and sentences that serve as bridges between different parts of the composition. Choosing the
right transitions requires a keen awareness of the logical relationships between ideas, ensuring
that the reader can effortlessly follow the progression of thoughts.
Moreover, the challenge extends to maintaining a balance between overusing transitions and
neglecting their presence. Striking the right equilibrium ensures that the essay doesn't become
overly verbose or disjointed. It demands a certain finesse in integrating transitions organically,
allowing them to enhance the essay's structure rather than detract from it.
Additionally, the writer must grapple with the task of adapting transitions to different essay
types and genres. Whether it's a narrative, expository, persuasive, or any other form, transitions
play a crucial role in shaping the overall quality of the piece. Adjusting the tone, style, and
frequency of transitions becomes a delicate dance, requiring a versatile and adaptable approach.
In conclusion, writing an essay on "Transitions Essays" is not a simple feat. It demands a
nuanced understanding of language, structure, and the intricacies of essay composition.

District 9 Film Analysis
For those who have not watched the film District 9, here is a quick summary of the
movie. In 1982, aliens arrive on Earth, not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge
from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called
District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi National United, which is not concerned
with the aliens welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology.
When a company field agent Wikus contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter
his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9. The filmwas directed by
Neill Blomkampand starred Sharlto Copley(Wikus). It begins as a documentary
style investigation and then as the film continues it becomes more conventional
and character driven following Wikus and his transformation into a Prawn. The
film s main themes are Xenophobia and Segregation. Xenophobia is characterized
by a negative attitude towards foreigners, a dislike, a fear, or a hatred. Segregation
as most people know is a separation of people or objects from others. When picking
a critical approach to use for this essay two stuck out to me, Biographical and
Mimetic.
I chose biographical criticism to start with because I wanted to learn more about
director Neill Blomkamp. I read many articles, biographies and interviews about the
film producer. This quote is from an interview I found very informing. District 9
explores the issue of segregation and xenophobia. At first it shows a perspective of
trying to
Apple Inc.
Apple: An Introduction Apple Incorporation is one of the largest organizations
dealing into Information Technology. Apple has a host of products ranging from
Laptops, Desktops, Mobile Phones and Multimedia Devices. The company has
been extremely innovative in the field of multimedia and it owes it success to one
of the greatest innovators, Steve Jobs. The company has always believed in
innovation and that is the major reason why it has been so successful in the mobile
phone segment. In recent years Apple is second only to Samsung in the Global
Mobile Phone industry. However the operations have been largely based in the

For any product or service there is a product life cycle in which there is a decline

the Products have reached a maturity stage and hence there is a chance of decline.
This has also been evidenced to certain extent as Samsung has taken over as the
market leader in the mobile phone segment. The emergence of cheaper brands like
Lenovo etc has also been a challenge for IT products of Apple. However it is also
true that Apple has always focussed on consumer trends and demands and thus has
been capable of avoiding the decline stages. Further market development and
diversification strategies have been suitably implemented
Why US Consumers Buy Foreign Goods
For the first time in many years, ordinary people in the US are worrying about the
economic future of the country. The underlying reason for this worry is a
realization that the secret perpetual motion engine of the economy has run short of
what you might call fuel , for want of a better word. Here are the key steps in this
critical cycle in the economic life of the nation: 1. US consumers buy foreign
goods 2. Part of the profit from these sales is invested in additional foreign goods to
be sold to US consumers and the remainder is invested in US financial institutions 3.
The financial institutions lend the dollars to US consumers 4. US consumers buy
foreign goods (that is, we return to step 1) This is a positive feedback loop. If... Show

However, they are extremely controversial. People tend to have extremely strong
opinions about credit cards. On one side, we have those who vehemently criticize
credit cards as the modern evil that has brought financial ruin to so many Americans.
At the other extreme, we have those who see credit cards necessary instruments for
establishing and improving one s credit history and for learning financial restraint (
Credit cards, n.d.). So, which side is correct? Do credit cards spell financial doom
or are they a useful and valuable tool in our society today? In order for us to
honestly answer these questions, we must fully understand the advantages and
disadvantages of credit cards. First, think about some of the possible advantages of
having credit cards. The first thing that comes to my mind is convenience. Credit
cards are so tiny that they can easily fit in your pocket. Also, most places readily
take credit cards these days. And we cannot forget that credit cards can minimize
our need to count money at the cash register or to wait to buy that must have
product until we get our next paycheck. Therefore, it is accurate to say that credit
cards are relatively convenient to carry and use ( Credit cards, n.d., Pros section).
Moreover, credit cards are accepted in quite a number of foreign nations, making
traveling or online purchases a whole lot simpler. Credit cards also give you much

Iran Contra Affair Research Paper
The Iran Contra Affair The Iran Contra affair is one of the largest examples of what
occurs when government communication breaks down. Within this communication
breakdown, simple negligence over details or issues can create scandals that
otherwise would not happen. This rocked the nation in the 1980s and is undoubtedly
one of the largest scandals in American history. The Iran Contra affair consists of two
different situations that are linked simply by money. The Contra portion of the Iran
Contra affair began in Nicaragua where the United Statescontinued to be involved in
the matters of other countries. In 1979 the Sandinista socialist group was able to take
power over the previous dictator Somoza Garcia. With this the US became nervous,...

Within these hearings, many individuals involved were questioned extensively, in
particular, Oliver North and John Poindexter. Immediately after the Iran Contra
affair was leaked, Oliver North and his secretary worked to destroy as many
documents related to the affair as possible. However, North missed a key
document in which he described his entire plan of using funds from arms sales to
Iran to support the Contras. Also after the leak, North was removed from the
National Security Council and sent back to the marines. At his trial, Oliver North
wore his green military uniform with his medals. Within the trial, North admitted to
shredding documents and admitted that he was a central figure in the operation,
but said that he also had asked for approval from higher figures. North was
eventually pardoned by George W. Bush. The other main trial involved John
Poindexter, the leader of the National Security Council who resigned when the story
was leaked. In his immunized testimony, Poindexter took full responsibility for the
affair and said that all information had ended at his line in the chain of command,
and that nothing had been said to Reagan. Poindexter also said that he believed
diverting funds was legal as it helped the large political goal of aiding the Contras,
and that President Reagan would have supported the operation had he known about
it. This lack of attention was a major flaw during Reagan s
Case Study Pepcid Ac
Pepcid AC Case Study Problem Statement: On August 1, Johnson Johnson/Merck
Consumer Pharmaceuticals Co. (JJM) came up with an over the counter drug (OTC)
Pepcid AC that would prevent/ treat heartburn and stomach distress. The drug was
not approved by the advisory committee due to the fact that it neither prevented nor
treated heartburn, thus restrained the Pepcid AC to be the first H2 switch entrant to
the market. The target for JJM should be to make Pepcid AC the first H2 switch
entrant in the market with both treatment/prevention claim with negligible side
effects, unique customer base of 2,316,000( See(1) in appendix) and Sales target of

The time taken to validate treatment/prevention claim of heartburn would be less
approximately four months considering the amount of research that has gone in
1993. Research such as provocative meal clinical trial, and consumer behavior
usage were focused on stomach distress and not heartburn. The reason FDA
rejected heartburn claim is because of insufficient data to prove its claim. Moving
forward the way they could modify the research where JJM specifically focuses on
heartburn and gets more data collected with respect to heartburn alone, also making
sure that the composition of Pepcid AC used in this study is same as the one that is
launched. Thus, by getting these results and FDA takes very less time to approve
OTC drug, JJM should not have any problem in launching the product in 5 months as
a new Pepcid AC that treats/prevents both stomach distress and
How To Survive Tornadoes
The alarm sounds and hear the crackling, like popcorn. It is hard to move, hard to
think, hard to speak. Tornadoes cause a lot of stress and are very hard to escape. It
is very possible to survive. There are ways to survive tornadoes and we ll go
through them right now. Firstly, what are tornadoes and how are they created.
Tornadoes are rotating columns of air. They can be very dangerous. Warm moist air
from lower parts of the world collide with cold dry air to make a supercell. The
supercell has a lot of windand is a horizontal column of air. Then, with difference in
the airs speed, it causes updraft, now forming as a Tornado.
Now, who is affected by it? Well the answer is the Middle East part of America or in
science terms, Tornado Alley.
The Initiation Of Formal Education Essay
Prekindergarten marks the initiation of formal education for most young children in
the United States. Educators in these classrooms often focus their teaching on the
integration of learning and play. Children in prekindergarten, however, often learn
more than material outlined in curricular standards. A child s introduction to
preschool often their first institutional experience forces them to adopt a subject
position in this new social context (Mansson 8). That is, children become socialized
by the formal school setting; they develop individual and group manners, classroom
etiquette, and interpersonal skills. With these social lessons come a series of social
beliefs, norms, and expectations, not least among them, genderand gender roles. As
innocent and naГЇve as some may believe them to be, preschoolers are attentive and
perceptive; they are not immune to the explicit and implicit ideas and messages about
gender that surround them. Early lessons in gender, gender roles, power, and
inequality become ingrained in young minds and often serve to frame rather, to
confine ideas about ability, potential, and achievement. There exists a significant
volume of research on various topics of gender in the prekindergarten setting,
including gender salience, gender roles, and gender differences. Utilizing existing
research and classroom experiences, this paper thus explores the nuances of gender as
they manifest themselves in the prekindergarten classroom setting and provides
Moral Values In Ancient Rome
A long time ago, a civilization was created in Italy s west coast, at around 1000 B.C.
This civilization was called, Ancient Rome. ancient Rome was one of the greatest
empires in history (The New Book of Knowledge). Its geographical position in the
center of the peninsula, near the sea, contributed to its growth in importance and the
adventurous character of its people. (Levine, Irving R.) There were a lot of things
that were very important for the citizens of that civilization in those times. Important
things like: how Rome was found, the religions that were created in Rome, things
about the statesman Julius Cesar, and also about the founder of the Roman empireand
the first emperor of it, Augustus. Women rights such as women not being... Show

But, education and moral values were also important so the society could make
progress in the developing section. Citizens needed to have moral values and a good
education so they could contribute to the progress of making Rome a little bit better
for everyone in the area. There were some people in Ancient Romewho just chose to
not collaborate with the helping of making it better because maybe they weren t
educated and didn t know what to do if they didn t have money, so they just did
what others told them to do or maybe they just didn t want to collaborate. As Dr.
Kara Cooney from the University of California, Los Angeles said, ... and it is very
telling that in the sack of Rome in 455 when the emperor flees, the people that are
said to have kill them, are romans, the roman mop who kills their own emperor...

Analysis Of The Play Antigone
For centuries men have been finding ways to gain control over everything and
everyone. One group that has been oppressed by men throughout history are women.
Men have placed rules and regulations upon women making them seen as unequal
and inferior. Was it fear? Was it the hunger for power? Was is the highness of
superiority? Whatever the reasons were, men had to be seen as the highest being next
to whom they worshiped. In the play Antigoneby Sophocles, the audience is exposed
to the roles of men and women in an ancient Greece society known as Thebes.
Although ancient Greece was a male dominant society where women had as much
freedom as a slave, Sophocles main character in the play, Antigone, is an example of
a brave, strong minded woman who goes against the limitations that were unfairly
set upon women during that time to do what she believes is right. In this play,
gender roles assists in the process of portraying the story since it affects some of the
decisions of the characters and helps lead the story into the climax.
The beginning of the play begins with Antigone and her sister, Ismene. Antigone
presents her plan of burying their brother, Polynices, whose body had been denied a
proper burial by their uncle, King Creon, since in his eyes Polynices had been seen
as an enemy to the city. Antigone wanted Ismene to accompany her, but Ismene
immediately refused in fear of the consequences. Ismene states We are women and we
do not fight with men/ We are subject to them
Database Design in an Institutional Nursing Setting
Database Design for Knowledge and Information Sharing in an Institutional Nursing
Setting Introduction This paper details the need for creating a database to track the
conducting of group sessions by nurses in a large healthcare institution ward, and
presents an overview of a plan for effective database usage. The knowledge and
information sharing by and among nurses in this group is both required by
administration and desirable from a healthcare perspective, yet the perceived
difficulties in actually creating such a database have prevented its implementation. A
conceptual data model, including the key entities and relationships that will be
involved in maintaining and utilizing the database, is provided below, and a
visualization of the relationships involved in the database appears in the appendix.
Database Proposal: Promoting Sharing and Accuracy Group patient meetings or
sessions with a variety of healthcare personnel are supposed to take place regularly,
with records of these meetings and reasons for non meetings recorded by nursing
staff (and groups often led or overseen by nursing staff, as well). This is in keeping
with findings by Rosner et al (2011) that, treatment of group therapy under
naturalistic conditions in patient clinical setting can be effective, and the regular
maintenance of records is both useful in treatment and is required for various reasons
by administration (p. 216). Though a group notebook exists for the recording of
meeting information
The Hidden Recesses Of The Mind
He that has eyes to see and ears to hear may convince himself that no mortal can
keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he chatters with his fingertips; betrayal oozes out
of him at every pore. And thus the task of making conscious the most hidden recesses
of the mind is one which it is quite possible to accomplish.
Sigmund Freud, Dora:An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria
All human writing contains hidden pieces of the unconscious mind buried within
layers of symbols and psychological defenses. When one writes something, all
previous experiences, feelings, and thoughts are brought together to form whatever
the person wishes to convey. Hidden emotions and feelings that are being suppressed
by psychological defences are often expressed unconsciously revealing the speaker s
hidden secrets. Logan LeBlanc s squibs contain multiple different psychological
defences, but Intellectualization and escapism appear the most often; they are usually
used together in his writing. Almost every time a very personal topic comes up in
one of LeBlanc s logical trains of thought, the conversation suddenly changes to either
something that he deems happy or acceptable, or he starts stating facts about one
topic or another. One example is when he says This would mean that even though
most people are strangers, they are still family in a way after talking about the
relationship between family and strangers in squib number one. After saying this, he
immediately escapes his thoughts and changes

Role Of Mental Illness In Prisons
Closing Doors on Mental Institutions and Opening New One s for Homelessness and
Incarceration Millions of Americans suffer from a mental illness throughout the
years, and a majority of them are not getting an adequate treatment. Individuals who
experience a mental illness are found in populations such as the homeless and jails.
Between one fourth and one third of the homeless population suffers from a serious
mental illness(Folsom, Hawthorne, Lindamer, Gilmer, Bailey, Golshan, Garcia,
Unutzer, Hough, Jeste, 2005) and at least 16 percent of inmates in jails and prisons
suffer from a mental illness (treatment advocacy center 2010). The care for the
mentally ill in mental institutions has been significantly cut down throughout the
passing years.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to receive a treatment, the patient must be cooperative and have will power
to make a change for themselves. Often times, homeless people reject a treatment in
housing because they consider the way they are going to be treated. If a homeless
with a mental illness recalls bad experiences with their treatment most likely they
wouldn t like to come back or looking forward to find another kind of treatment. The
problem becomes evident when the mental health community and the homeless
person do not agree on expectations of each other s role and needs. Mental health
professionals have an interest for structure and supervision while the homeless
mentally ill consider the neighborhood that they will be moving into, the amount
of space that is available for them, and the safety that it offers them (Linhorst,
2015). Both parties definitely need to work together in order to make things work,
but professionals serving the mentally ill really need to have in mind and
understand the necessities of these individuals. Now the situation with the
mentally ill in prisons is different considering their choices are limited. One of the
ways to minimize problems with mentally inmates is to immediately recognize any
kind of possible problems during the time they first arrive to jail. Once in jail the
first thing to keep in mind is that the mentally ill need to receive an appropriate
treatment. This can be done by the managing of psychiatric medications especially
to those with a serious mentally illness and it is not necessary to be in a hospital
setting to do this. At the time of release an inmate should be given a written plan for
a psychiatric follow up (Treatment Advocacy Center, 2014.) The result of this would
be a decrease in inmates coming back to
The Top-Down Approach
The top down approach is a definite system of control and command by the
authoritative person of the government to the project, which concerns the people
(Political pipeline, 2013). The state superintendent, Tom Torlakson will carry out the
policy decision. The strength of the top down approach is: (a) it has clear and
consistent goals being articulated by the top authority and (b) it has strong rules that
are aligned with the policy since it is established on the top. The autocratic leadership
in the top down approach is beneficial to the organization with knowledgeable and
talented leaders.

the policy. The group participates in the decision making about the ... Show more

On this approach, the public is given specific directions and is expected to follow the

Pros And Cons Of Coal Mining
Do you think that coal mining is risky. Some people belive that it is not even worth

consequences that come to be from the reversal of womens rights in a society
called Gilead. It is what one can consider a cautionary tale. In the new world of
Gilead, a group of conservative religious extremists have taken power, and have
turned the sexual revolution upside down. The society of Gilead is founded on what
is to be considered a return to traditional values, gender roles and the subjugation of
women by men, and the Bible is used as the guiding principle. It differs completely
from the society, which was once the place in which Feminists argued for liberation

Students who live at or below the poverty line are often lacking in their reading and
math skills, often do not have enough food in their homes, and often do not have
the parental support needed at a young age to help students be successful in the

Elementary School work to reduce the effects of low socioeconomic status in the
classroom. For example, students who stay for the after school program receive a
free meal before going home in the afternoon. Free food is placed in students

they are not at school. There are math and reading tutors that come into the
classrooms and work with students who are below their grade level or who are at
high risk of falling behind their grade level in these two subjects. The school has

Hart Crane s Influence On Make It New
Among the innumerable modernist poets that successfully encompass Ezra Pound
s slogan, Make It New, Hart Crane best embodies this mindset with his innovative
poetry. However, Make It New does not imply that the ideas must be completely
original. Very well read, Crane and his poetry were influenced by many, ranging
from foreign writers, such as William Shakespeare and Charles Baudelaire, to other
writers of his time, such as T.S. Eliot. By merging already recognized ideas of
renowned writers along with his own creativity, Crane conveys a sense of familiarity,
allowing readers to grasp onto traces of acquainted aspects as they attempt to make
sense of his otherwise profound poetry. While borrowing others ideas may seem far
from innovative,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To Brooklyn Bridge was directly inspired by T.S. Eliot s The Wasteland and Walt
Whitman s Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, but the poem itself does not contain words
or phrases that directly correlate to those specific poets and their respective poems.
Instead, the overall atmosphere of the poem may remind readers of Eliot and
Whitman. First of all, once again according to the anthology, To Brooklyn Bridge is
a hopeful reply to The Wasteland, where Eliot writes of a fractured world, a
perspective Crane shares, but his response paints a more optimistic picture. Crane
accomplishes this by using the Brooklyn Bridge as its prime symbol... to restore
meaning and unity to a fragmented and dissonant modern world (Axelrod 626). The
Bridge is a manmade effort that is capable of connecting the fragmented world. This
hope is also reminiscent of Whitman s ideas of an idealistic and unified America. Yet,
a more significant influence from Whitman is the theme of repressed homosexuality
that is present in the poem. With both poets being homosexual, it is no surprise that
Crane was influenced by Whitman. The second to last stanza

less you do your homework, the worse the class will become. And your grades.
(Bromley 5) Not only will your grades worsen, you class will worsen too. You
could easily avoid all of this by doing your homework. If you were a student who
did their homework you would most likely not have to worry about bad grades.
Given these examples, student should do homework because it can help improve your
Jill Greenberg End Times Summary
Photography, just like many other art forms, is commonly used as a tool for self
expression, social commentary and political activism. Jill Greenberg is no
stranger to using photography in such a way, and eventually became quite
controversial for some of her works. While a quick glance at Greenberg s website
shows how diverse her work is, she got a lot of attention for End Times, her series
of photos publicized in 2006 that showed crying toddlers, including her own two
children. This series was inspired by her unhappiness with the then current Bush
administration. While it s very commonplace for people to disagree with each other
for political reasons, a lot of the criticism Greenberg got for End Times was due to
uncertainty about why the children were crying, and speculation that the children
may have been abused. While child abuse is obviously unethical, Greenberg has
explained the process and emphasized that these children were not being abused or in
any sort of pain, so it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her words, the controversy came a few weeks later, when a pseudonymous
photo blogger a banker by day discovered the work online and wrote that I should
be arrested and charged with child abuse for my techniques [1]. While these sorts of
claims often come from emotional origins, and the blogger was likely very
concerned about the wellbeing of the children in Greenberg s photos, there doesn t
seem to be any evidence of child abuse and the accusation seems entirely
unsubstantiated. On the phone with Paper Mag, Greenberg said It was really hurtful
and upsetting...People want to explain why the images make them feel something,
and they assume that feeling is bad [2]. To me, Greenberg seems to believe that
critics felt the emotion in the image but were unable to tie the emotion to her political
Sensory Processing Disorders And The Central Nervous
System
Auditory Processing Disorders, also known as Central Processing Disorders, are
difficulties in the processing of auditory information in the central nervous system.
The definition for an Auditory Processing Disorder is frequently changing and
evolving. According to ASHA standards in 2005, a central processing disorder refers
to difficulties in the perceptual processing of auditory information in the central
nervous systemand the neurobiological activity that underlies the processing and
gives rise to the electrophysiological auditory potentials (ASHA 2005). Recent
evidence has declared auditory processing disorders to be a legitimate clinical
disorder resulting from confirmation of the link between well defined lesions of the
central nervous system and deficits on behavioral and electrophysiological central
auditory measures (Musiek, F. Journal of American Academy of Audiology). An
individual is likely to perform normally in tests including clicks and tones, rather than
speech. There is a significant difference between the receptors for audition and
speech processing. It is imperative that these disorders are diagnosed and treated early
in a child s development to eliminate developmental negative consequences.
The physiology of hearing starts with a vibration that occurs in the air which sends
an acoustic signal to the ear drum. The signal is transduced into a mechanical signal
that transmits through the inner ear and the cochlear nerve. Finally, the signal is
The Debate Over The Generation
Everyone s been there; extended family gathered around the dinner table discussing
life when someone makes the notorious comment; Get off your phone, your
generation, all you care about is technology! The debate over Millennials being
inadequate and too technology based has become frequent, the common argument
from adults being that all Millennials care about is their phone. Yet adults have
frequently stated this as they glance up from their phone as their fingers rapidly tap
away on a screen. Adults can not continue to blame technology for Millennials lack of
knowledge when they were the ones who raised us this way. Furthermore, contrary to
belief, if anything technology has furthered Millennials growing intelligence, not
damaged it. Therefore, although technological advances have been made, the
common belief that Millennials are the dumbest generationis invalid due to the fact
that millennials literacy and overall intelligence is increasing while the rigor of
classes is skyrocketing.
Technology seems to be the pinpoint of the argument of millennials being dumb.
Millennials are always on their phone. Anytime something negative happens it always
seems to relate back the that dumb phone. Yet contrary to this, technology has
increased millennials intelligence levels, due to the fact that the digital world lowers
barriers to self directed learning (Mizuko Ito Al.). Instead of spending hours in
libraries, paging through books trying to find evidence for a research
The Effect of World War One on People at Home Essay
The Effect of World War One on People at Home The people at home lives were
affected in a wide variety of ways during the First World War. Some people s lives
were altered for the good, where as some were altered for the bad. During the First
World War, a lot of people were needed in the army. This meant that volunteers
were required by their many hundreds. To influence this, propaganda was used in
the forms of pamphlets, posters, newspapers and by word of mouth. The source A1

The volunteering system was not only very inefficient; it was also not a very fair
system because you were not forced to join up. So in 1916 the government
decided to introduce conscription. A typical government conscription poster is
shown in source A4. It states that unmarried men must sign up to the army. Any
man who wished not to join up was labelled a conchie, or a conscientious objector.
Many of these people had religious beliefs which stated that thou shall not kill and
so they did not believe in war and killing people. These people helped out other
ways. Others thought that the war was only being fought for the Capitalists. These

written by a conscientious objector who managed to escape from prison in 1916.
He says that people should support the troops, if not in person, then in spirits. This
man was an absolutist who did not agree to war neither did he want anything to do
with it. The government frowned upon these people and threw them into prison
because they were scared of the working class uprising. While the government were
dealing with recruiting men, they were also being embarrassed by the shortages of
munitions. The newspapers soon let the people know about this scandal, which is a
rare example of anti government stories. In source B2 we are shown Lloyd George

The Ripple Effect By Mrs. Jones
The Ripple effect, the ripple effect is about one good deed rippling out and making
other good deeds. That is basically what this is, when you think about it it is
actually true. In the story there are so many examples of a small action making a
big change. One of those actions are when Mrs. Jones doesn t call the cops and
instead takes Roger back to her house. This is like the ripple effect because if she
called the police and got taken in then he wouldn t be given a change, Roger knows
that he can do good but if he got taken to jail then he would think that he was bad
because everyone is saying he is bad but instead Mrs.Jones gave him a chance and it
helped him realize that he shouldn t do bad deeds and then maybe roger can teach

Humanity and Its Way of Being Lost
Sanity, slowly fading away, with savagery slowly taking its place. Within the
book, Lord of the Flies, a group of young boys, ranging from ages of 3 to 13, were
escaping from their all boys school within an airplane. But unfortunately, the boys
plane is attacked and the boys end upon a deserted island, and all of the adults are
dead. The boys take it upon themselves to survive, until they are rescued, but being
upon that island for so long, the boys soon lose who they are. Some don t want to be
rescued, and some have just lostit completely. Lives and personalities are lost to the
invading savagery of the island. Throughout the book, Golding shows how the boys

Bertrand Russell Rhetorical Analysis
Bertrand Russell argues that we should worship our good instinct, moral insights
rather than worshiping the evil god. He says we should create our own ideals and
worship them. Russell explains that worshiping our ideals gives us true freedom. As
he says, in determination to worship only the god created by our own love of the
good, to respect only the heaven which inspires the insight of our best moments
(pg.51). I disagree with Russell s argument because worshiping our insights does not
reflect reality. Our personal ideals are not realistic. This paper will examine Russell s
arguments of his position of worshipping our good instincts rather than the universal
power through his idea of freedom, human virtue and by turning indignation to
resignation. The second part of this paper will critically analyze Russell s position.
Bertrand Russell is concerned with people, whom he calls savages worshipping the
universal power. These savages respect the power more than themselves because they
find the power greater than anything they see in themselves. Their thoughts and
beliefs are of those the power devours. Russell suggests that we should question
whether the universal power deserves this respect. Russell concludes that we must
follow our very own good instinct, which will bring us true freedom rather than the
universal evil power. As he says, the vision of beauty is possible only to unfettered
contemplation, to thoughts not weighted by the load of eager wishes (pg.52).
Pop Culture
In the course of my lifetime, I have witnessed firsthand the erosion of decency
standards in media. In present day it is not unusual to hear swearing on the radio,
nudity in magazines and all of the above on television. Over the course of a few
years it is apparent that societal views on decency have declined immensely. It
appears as if we have evolved from a society aimed at preventing children from
exposure to indecency, to a society in which parental controls are not only
available, but are a necessity. In an even more concerning observation the lower
standard of decency is not only geared towards adults as it is very much apparent on
networks catered to children. The decline in decency standards is also very apparent in

Perhaps the greatest evidence of the eroded decency standards in television, is
Reality TV. In the past few years some of the most popular television shows have
been Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Hell s Kitchen.
While each of those may cater to a different audience they do share an ability to
effectively contribute to the eroding standard of decency. In fact in every one of
those aforementioned shows, foul language can be found. Some shows take it a step
further and incorporate drug themes, and sexual connotations. In an episode of Teen
Mom we viewed examples of Domestic Violence and Prescription drug abuse.
Keeping up with the Kardashians featured an episode in which Khloe Kardashian
was arrested for driving under the influence. It appears that the reality of reality
Television is that foul language, promiscuity and barely there attire is an ongoing
trend. It is quite apparent that we live in a society with a Sex Sells mentality. This
Frankenstein As An Experimental Error
Frankenstein was the type of mad scientist who would isolate himself in a
laboratory, secretly creating another human life, only to discover he created a
monster (Haynes, 2006). The Frankenstein story was a product of the subconscious
rather than the conscious mind of its own author (Haynes, 2006). The monster
replied to the beauties of nature, to the joys of domesticity and ideas of excellent
novels (Haynes, 2006). The monster had both an alter ego and even denied that he
had a child while married to Elizabeth (Haynes, 2006). According to the novel
Frankenstein is known as the innocent victim of a mistake and his careless
supporter has brought him the brain of a murderer instead of a dignified person, for
inserting into his creature (Haynes, 2006). The evil character of the Monster is now
considered an experimental error, rather than the predictable result of Frankenstein s
hubris, and the allegation is that the creation of the Monster (Haynes, 2006). The
film ended with the Monster being burnt to death and the celebration of
Frankenstein s wedding to Elizabeth (Haynes, 2006). The film focused on the fact
that the creation of the Monster was possible only because Frankenstein would let
his normal, healthy mind become filled with evil and perverted thoughts (Haynes,
2006). When the monster eventually fades away, it leaves only his reflection in the
mirror (Haynes, 2006). The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is about a

The phylum is Chordata.
The class is Mamalia.
The order is Proboscidea.
The family is Elephantidea.
The life cycle for the African elephant is very particular. Mating and gestation is very
particular for African Elephants. African Elephants do not have a specific
breeding season, although research has proven that there are more births during
times of heavy rainfall. A Females estrus cycle lasts about thirteen to sixteen
weeks, ovulation lasts around four days. Male elephants also called bulls, look for
female mates when they have entered musth a period of intense aggressiveness and
sexual drive. For each male it is different when they come into musth at a specific
time every year, it usually lasts about six to twelve weeks. After a gestation period
of 22 months females give birth to a single calf. On average female elephants give
birth to one calf every four to nine years. Elephants calves can weigh 265 pounds on
average at birth. Within the hour they are born calves are able to walk, see, and

The Occupational Safety And Health Administration
Introduction
Violence in the workplace has been an increasing problem for many years, but it is
hitting the healthcare profession hardest.(1) Nearly 24,000 assaults in the work
environment occur every year, with nearly 75% occuring to healthcare
providers.(2) In 2001, it was reported that physicians were assaulted at a rate of 16.2
assaults per 1,000 physicans, nurses were assualted at a rate of 21.9 assaults per
1,000 nurses, and other healthcare workers (with varying job titles) were assaulted at
a rate of 8.5 assaults per 1,000 employees.(3) In 2004, it was documented that as
many as 14% of doctors and 40% of nurses in a UK survey reported being assaulted
in the year prior. (4)
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has defined
workplace violence as violence or the threat of violence against workers. It can
occur at or outside the workplace and can range from threats and verbal abuse to
physical assaults and homicide. (5) The US Bureau of Justice defines workplace
violence as nonfatal violence (rape/sexual assualt, robbery, and aggravated and simple
assault) against employed persons age 16 or older that occurred while they were at
work or on duty. (1) Previous research on the topic of workplace violence in
healthcare often lacks the ability to be directly compared due to a lack of definition
consensus. In 2000, Rippon defined aggression as behavior with intent that is directed
at doing harm to a living being whether harm results or not, or with
The Codes Of Fidelity And Hospitality In Modern Society
In modern society the codes of behavior are described as etiquette that each society
member is expected to follow. In ancient Greek culture it was very essential to
follow codes of behavior. In the first half of odyssey there are several codes of
behavior spotted like hospitality, vengenance, fidelity, household loyalty, and
reverence. The particular types of codes of behavior that will be discussed in this
essay are fidelity and hospitality. Hospitality is an important aspect in society where
guests are treated as though they were god. Fidelity code is loyalty between husband
and wife being loyal to each other. Both codes will be taken into the account and
illustrated with example from the first half of The Odyssey.

Loyalty to family, society and the gods is an important aspect in ancient Greek
culture. This quality is often seen between characters throughout The Odysseyas
specially loyalty between husband and wife. Loyalty could be defined based on The

again loyalty is seen in the complete fidelity in the time of uncertainty. Penelope waits

The Quest For Peace And Justice
When people think of speeches, they usually refer to important people talking about
important topics. The idea of importance often differs time to time ranging from
Abortions to Gun Laws. Martin Luther King, JR. is one of those important figures,
as he led a variety of peaceful protests from the boycott for Rosa Parks to
demonstrations in Birmingham in the fight for Civil Rights. Not to mention, he led
the nonwhites in a peaceful resistance of nonviolenceagainst unfair racial views. Out
of all of his speeches, one unique one which stands out is The Quest for Peace and
Justice. It shows the concept where mankind has still not matured enough to where
each person of differing race is able to live next to each other peacefully. Unless
mankind can get past the walls of racial injustice, ignorance of poverty, and the true
evil of war, then the battle against racial prejudice will end in the worst scenario
possible. Mankind already has the ability to solve all of its obstacles by uniting
together as a family connected by love and god. In fact, there are two other
speeches comparable in terms of influence and emotion. The most commonly
known I Have a Dream speech on August 28th, 1963 and A Time to Break Silence
as King believes the people must see the war from the perspective of the
Vietnamese as a peaceful approach is the best approach. Of course, The Quest for
Peace and Justice is inferior to those two simply because it is overloading on

Reality Shows And The Reality Of Reality Television,...
Nowadays, there is a wide selection of reality shows, which audiences can pick and
watch. The reason why there are so many different types of reality shows is due to
the expansion of the broadcasting industry and the need to ingratiate the taste of the
public. Although most people will agree the term reality shows is used to identify
shows that have arisen since the 21st century, the appearance of reality television
shows actually emerged earlier than everyone thought. For example, Allen Funt s
Candid Camera, which was the first reality show in the United States, arose in 1948
wherein real people respond to funny pranks or unusual situations for the first time
ever under hidden cameras (Beck 6). Apart from the entertainment reality shows,
non fictional entertainment shows such as documentaries about ordinary people,
quiz and game shows also appeared during the 1990s (Beck 4). Therefore, the aim
for people to watch reality shows at that time is entertainment and education. Yet, as
time progresses, distinct subgenres of reality shows such as the makeover shows,
celebrity reality shows as well as dating shows developed in the 21st century and the
realness of reality shows has become controversial. The authenticity of reality shows
has become debatable not only because of these people are oftentimes getting paid to
be filmed on camera, but also because exaggerations of manliness, beauty, and wealth
are often portrayed in these programs, thus causing audiences to consider them

Metals and Halogens reactions
Elements such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine belong to Group
7, Halogens. At room temperature, fluorine is a yellow gas, chlorine is a pale
green gas, bromine is a red liquid, and iodine is a purple solid. Astatine is a
radioactive element, therefore it exists only in small amounts. All the halogens exist
in diatomic molecules. They have high ionization energies and are the most
electronegative elements. Their electron configuration ns2 np5 make them perfect

It was the triiodide ion that is mostly responsible for the orange red brown color
since iodide was colourless and since iodine is not very soluble in water. As the
reaction was progressing, the coloured solution began to fade to orange, yellow
and finally became colourless. As these colour changes occur, the temperature of
the solution was decreasing gradually until it has finally reached room temperature.
This change in colour was due to two factors. First, all of the solid and dissolved
iodine had reacted with the zinc to produce iodide and zinc ions, both of which are
colourless substances. Secondly, the red brown solution of triiodide ions also reacted
with zinc metal to produce the colourless iodide ions.
In the other experiment three pieces of universal pH indicator were placed on a

Essay about Islamic Influence in Western Medicine
Just as the Arabs preserved the knowledge of the Greek and Roman civilizations,
the Europeans were able to use and build off the knowledge built in the Islamic
world. This wealth of knowledge was the collection of ideas pulled from every
corner of the Islamic empire. Rulers collected Greek, Chinese, Indian, and Persian
literary works in vast libraries for the education of the masses. Western Europe
slowly learned bits and pieces of this knowledge through trade and diffusion of
culture. One medium through which the west learned a great deal was the translated
medical texts from scholars such as Ib n Sina (Avicenna). Europeans, from Italy to the
British Isles, were able to improve their medical and scientific knowledge by learning

However, in the medieval Islamic empire many surgeons were making careful and
quantitative observations to treat diseases. For instance, Physician Avicenna wrote
many medical doctrines and was the founder of many surgeries. He revolutionized
ways of performing surgeries such as removal of kidney stones, intubation and the
use of clinical trials for medicine (1). His book Cannon of Medicine was still in use
in universities in the 17th century. This book gave a base off which Europeans could
learn and pioneer their own medical practices.
Disease often consumed cities in Europe and the Catholic Church often blamed the
suffering on the sinfulness of the people. The Catholic Church would profit off this
idea and as a result, the church taught repentance as the only way to stay healthy.
Nevertheless, as more knowledge from the Islamic world traveled to Europe, ways of
disease prevention and understanding began to diffuse. The largest gain made through
use of Arabic texts was the introduction of a simplified version of the scientific
method. An organized method to prove scientific questions aided in the treatment of
disease, as well as in all areas of science. Up until the mid 15th century, scholars
believed that blood traveled from the right side of the heart to the left through the
septum. It was not until a physician, Ib n al Nafis, made careful observations and
noted that blood could not pass through

Oodgeroo Noonuccal s poem The Past was first published in 1970, narrated in the

writer s life as she compares her accidental present living in suburbia with idealistic
memories of her indigenous heritage. The idea that pastand presentare connected is a
recurring theme throughout the poem. Noonuccal is both the woman next to the

Objects like the electric heater are almost symbolic of her current existence, devoid
of any interaction with Nature, as opposed to a time when her ancestors would sit at

goals. Each character that strives to colonize the island has different motives based
on their place in the social hierarchy and their relationships to fellow characters.
However, each character seeking control over the island not only has their own
motives, but also their own vision for what the island could be under their sole
jurisdiction. The three main players seeking to colonize the island and make their
own vision of what it could be into a reality are Prospero, Caliban, and Gonzalo.
Between these three characters we see relationships between the colonizer, the
colonized, and one character who envisions the island as an opportunity to create the
perfect society. Power and control are prominent themes in Shakespeare s The
Tempest, as the audience is faced with severe questions of morality and who has
rightful claim of the island.
As the play begins, we learn of the master/servant relationships that are already in
place on the island. Prospero is the current all powerful and omnipotent ruler of the
island, who uses strategical social tactics of abuse and manipulation
John F. Kennedy s Accomplishments Essay
The campaign for President in 1960s was one of the closest races between two
candidates. In the end, John F. Kennedy, the Democratic nominee, had only been
elected by a one tenth of a percent margin against his Republican party opponent,
Richard M. Nixon. John F. Kennedy had made specific decisions as the Democratic
candidate that helped him leap to victory. Specifically, JFK s performance during the
first televised debate, decision to focus on key large states, Houston tape, and other
decisions had overall led to him winning the election of 1960. On the other end,
Nixon had made some inaccuracies and mistakes that cost him getting elected.
Specifically, Nixon s hospitalization, promise to visit all 50 states, performance and
appearance on the first nationally viewed television and other errors are what led to
JFK s win. Because of Nixon s and Kennedy s decisions during the campaign of
1960, it would, after all, lead to JFK s election.
JFK had made very crucial decisions during his run for President in which helped him
to beat Nixon. First, JFK played it smart by focusing on large crucial states
throughout the United States of America. Kennedy s travels consisted of
Kennedy s jetting across the country from September 2 to 25 to twenty six states:
New Hampshire, Maine, California, Alaska, Michigan (for Labor Day), Idaho,
Washington, Oregon, Texas (with Johnson), Missouri (a fund raiser in St. Louis),
New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, West
Mccrae Costa s Five-Factor Model
McCrae Costa s Five Factor Model
McCrae Costa s Five Factor model of personality has become the dominant
conception of personality structure (1985, 1987, and 1997). The Big Five
Personality traits are said to be predictive of some kinds of behaviour such as honesty,
job performance, and procrastination.
Critically discuss the relevance of this understanding of personality to Occupational
Testing.
McCrae and Costa s Five Factor model of personality is said to be predictive in
certain behaviours such as honesty, job performance and procrastination. This Five
Factor model applies to organisational testing because personality is a crucial part in
understanding the interests and abilities of an applicant within a business. There have

Agreeable personality traits have been known to be associated with a constructive
approach to dealing with conflict but agreeable people have also been known to be
aggressive (Weiten, 2007). Neuroticism relates to people who are anxious or hostile
(Weiten, 2007). People who score high in this personality trait have been known to
over re act to stressful situations (Weiten, 2007).
Organisational psychology focuses on role related behaviour, group pressure,
commitment to organisations and patterns of communication (Sibaya Malcolm,
2003). In order for an organisational psychologist to determine this behaviour
certain organisational testing or psychological assessments need to take place. A
psychological assessment is a standardised measure of a sample of a person s
behaviour (Weiten, 2007). Psychological assessment is one of the oldest and most
focussed areas of industrial organisational psychology (Weiten, 2007).
Psychological assessment focuses on an individual s difference in behaviour and
their individual job performance and then develops ways in which they can
measure or predict such performances. Testing enables psychologists to select
people for jobs, assess one s potential and develop people. Testing can often lead to
labelling of people and selection for jobs, promotions or training has often been made
in accordance to these labels.

Theseus And The Minotaur
There are many examples of heroes throughout history and in story books that
convey great messages, but what makes your leaders heroes? There are many
attributes that make a hero but there are three main areas. To be a hero, one must be
willing to make many sacrifices, be humble and not expect anything from the actions,
and make positive changes. To be a hero means to sacrificesomething for someone
else no matter the circumstances or dangers. An example of this is in the myth
Theseus and the Minotaur. It gives a great example of sacrifice and heroism.
Powerful king Minos of Crete demands Athenian women and men every year to
feed to the Minotaur. When Theseus heard about this, he was not happy. He took
the place of one of the sacrificed men and went to the labyrinth of the Minotaur to
try and kill the beast himself. Theseus then expressed his feelings of frustration by
saying saying, When it is time to send the next tribute, I will go as one of them and
I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our
people. Theseus was strong and was willing to put himself in danger for the safety
of his people. Not many people have the courage to sacrifice themselves. Parents
make sacrifices every day. Think of how hard mothers or fathers works to make
money, to keep the kids happy, to feed them, to clean up after everyone, to get their
kids where they what to go. My mom makes sacrifices everyday. She takes my
brother dance right after a long
Juror 8 12 Angry Men
I will be analyzing the movie 12 Angry Men with Aristotle s six elements of drama.
After I analyze everything, I will be making a critic on how I felt about the movie.
Starting with plot is basically a jury of 12 men trying to find out if a boy is guilty
or not guilty for the stabbing of his father. Juror 8 changed the other eleven jurors
with facts and the help of the others the boy was set free. The exposition of the
story was about how juror 3 at the end would not vote not guilty because of his bad
history with his son. The point of attack is when the one guy that says not guilty and
starts to change the others minds little by little. The complication of the story was
trying to put all the pieces together to make sense that the boy did... Show more

The thought of this stories and some of the guys work together to proven to the
other person that they are right. The theme of this story is justice, social
inequality, and social responsibility. Juror 8 wins because he has proven to
everybody even with some help that there was no way that the boy killed his
father. The actions of the jurors mainly 3 was one of those who just was mean and
did not want anyone to be right. The language of the story is all around dialogue
and formal speech. There are different men from different countries with different
accents and everything. Some even when they get upset into to arguments they
would cuss. Some almost got into fit fights because it was so heated. Some talked
really fast that you could barely understand what they were saying. Some were
kind of timid and soft like to where they sounded afraid to speak or something.
There was not a lot of music but it did play apart in how some things went down.
The music throughout was very kind of sad and soft. The music really set the mood
to where we knew when they were frustrated or sad. Until the end with the kind of
joyful music because the decision was made the boy did not go to

Monotheism In Ancient Civilizations
Monotheism in Ancient Civilizations
People of the ancient world worshiped an array of gods, but one of the most
important historical phenomenons purports the idea of a single God. The idea of this
single God can either serve to unite us in a common humanity, serve to initiate
discussion, or cause divisions when the attributes of this god are examined. Several
ancient religions have been greatly affected by the radical effects of monotheism.
Some early models of this belief include Atenism, Zoroastrianism, and Judaism which
evidences similarities in their makeup but also have distinct differences that
differentiate them from each other. One of the most obvious similarities among these
three religions is that they all share the central concept ... Show more content on

Hebrews proclaimed that God alone who reigns supreme over everything that he

his will and purpose is revealed by his words and his commandments. Judaism in
some sense declares war against all other gods and offered no compromises with
polytheism. Judaism sole object was the restitution of pure worship to Yahweh. It
proclaimed Yahweh as a spirit above all limitations of form, above all things,
independent of all conditions and without physical qualities (Jewish Encyclopedia
2011). Yahweh desired righteous conduct, a fear and reverence for him and
obedience to his law. However people were not mandated to follow him but had the
freedom of choice. Yahweh, this loving and kind god who was directly accessible to
everyone may have played a pivotal role in the success of this

British Columbia’s Carbon Tax and its Impact on
Greenhouse...
In June of 2008, British Columbia became the first and only Canadian province to
introduce a carbon tax, and has been praised and scone by environmentalists,
economists, and politicians alike, arguing whether the tax is efficient or destructive
method of controlling greenhouse gas emissions. The liberal premier Gordon
Campbell introduced the carbon tax; its main purpose would be to enforce a carbon
tax to increase the price of consumption of fossil fuels within the province, the
philosophy behind the tax was to make taxes higher on the deemed environmentally
detrimental purchases and lessen the tax on the others. The carbon tax promised to
achieve this in a carbon neutral way, which meant that the revenue received from the
tax would be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stewart Elgie, a University of Ottawa law and economics professor and chair of the
green economy think tank Sustainable Prosperity suggests that British Columbia s
per capita fuel usage had fallen more than 4 per cent compared with the rest of
Canada and its economy (Ebner, McCarthy, 2011) Evidently it is reducing the
amount of green house gasses emitted by fossil fuel use. However this is not the
concern many had with the introduction of the tax, but the concerns were focused
upon the externalities caused by this and the effects it would have on the economy.
Three years since the carbon tax introduction and the Provincial level of GDP has
remained approximately the same, (Greenery in Canada: We have a winner) With
the provincial level of GDP remaining around the same, this suggests that at the very
worst the carbon tax has had no negative effects to the provincial economy.
Furthermore the tax also promised to remain carbon neutral and promised to cut
corporate and private income tax. British Columbia has become the province with
the lowest income tax regime and the lowest corporate tax regime (Greenery in
Canada: We have a winner). Although the carbon tax is being praised by many, it still
faces concerns as many still argue the ineffectiveness of the tax and what that means
for the province.
One major objection many economists have to the question of carbon tax
effectiveness is whether the taxes on carbon are high enough to create any change in
Dog Food Research Paper
Chemicals In Dog Food Are They Good? Are They Bad?
You re standing in the pet store, buying your four legged friend some food. The
front of the bag says it s all natural, but you don t read the ingredients. Little do you
know, that food could be harming your dog. Did you realize dog food companies put
harmful chemicals into their product. Take a moment to ask yourself this question. If
you knew that a certain food was harmful to you, would you feed it to your dog?
Some dog food companies put harmful chemicals into their product that are also
harmful to humans. They call this feed grade. Feed grade is food that is much lower
quality than human grade. Feed grade allows toxins and chemicals into the food,
while human grade does not. For instance, they put a chemical in feed grade called
Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT). Not only has this chemical caused liver and
kidney problems in dogs, it has been linked to cancer in humans. ... Show more

Most of the time, companies will try to trick you into thinking that the product is
good by using a certain way of words. For example, when a bag says natural with
added vitamins This doesn t always mean its natural. This could simply mean that
there are only few natural ingredients and the rest are harmful. Those chemicals
could be made in labs and could even be harmful. Although not all chemicals are bad,
some of them can be affecting your precious pet. Back in 2014, the dog food
company Purina put a chemical called Propylene Glycol in their product, and had a
lawsuit against them. This chemical is so bad because this chemical is also found in
automobile antifreeze, which is very harmful to dogs. Veterinarian Patrick Mahoney
says These chemicals not only costed Purina millions of dollars, but costed some
dogs their
Case; Ge Growth
1. How difficult was the task facing Immelt assuming the CEO role in 2001? What
imperatives where there to change? What incentives to maintain the past? 2. What
do you think of the broad objectives Immelt has set for GE? Can a giant global
Conglomerate hope to outperform the overall market growth? Can size and diversity
be made an asset rather than a liability? 3. What is your evaluation of the growth
strategy (a strategy for a giant global conglomerate with a portfolio of mature
industrial businesses) Immelt has articulated? Is he betting on the right things to
drive growth? 4. How does this case illustrate how strategic intent needs to be
matched by both organizational capability and managerial competence; and show

He used tools like Six Sigma to realign the business around this objective. It was
through improved cash flow that Immelt would continue to invest in the business.
Immelt hoped to adjust organizational structure of GE from the cold, results oriented
focus of Jack Welch, to a more open and less hard edged architecture. He believed that
the major changes that he would initiate at GE would be a result of the changing
environment that GE faced and the shifting priorities that it faced. Rebalancing the
Business Portfolio Immelt believed that GE needed to reposition itself to maximize
growth opportunities and to achieve growth targets through sound acquisitions. As
2003 began, GE finalized plans to acquire Vivendi Universal Entertainment. Immelt
felt that this acquisition was crucial to growing the NBC business within GE as the
deal would provide them with important content, production facilities, cable
distribution and a strong management team. Shortly after the Vivendi deal, GE
announced plans to acquire a British life science company, Amersham. Immelt felt
that Biotechnology would be very important part of GE s future growth. There were
many concerns about this second merger, particularly the idea that GE s corporate
culture would stifle the innovation and creativity that had made Amersham successful
in the first place. Immelt vowed to not allow this to happen. Focusing on Customers,
Emphasizing Services Immelt named Beth Comstock as GE s
Essay about Jazz
Jazz
Jazz is a type of music developed by black Americans about 1900
and possessing an identifiable history and describable stylistic evolution. It is rooted
in the mingled musical traditions of
American blacks. More black musicians saw jazz for the first time a profession.
Since its beginnings jazz has branched out into so many styles that no single
description fits all of them with total accuracy.
Performers of jazz improvise within the conventions of their chosen style.
Improvisation gave jazz a personalized, individualized, and distinct feel. Most jazz is
based on the principle that an infinite number of melodies can fit the cord
progressively of any cord. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During a period when most improvisers were satisfied simply to embellish or
paraphrase a tune, Armstrong himself was a master at both. Armstrong^s command
of the trumpet was arguable greater than that of any preceding jazz trumpeter who
recorded.
In actuality, the revolution initiated by Armstrong took place
in fits and starts, and with little fanfare at the time. After
Armstrong^s departure from the King Oliver Creole Band, over a year would
transpire before he would record as a leader. And even when those famous recordings
were planned the classic quot;Hot Fives quot; the record company considered
enlisting a better known leader to front the band. Most accounts stress that
Armstrong^s talents may have been neglected by the general public, but were amply
recognized by the musical community quot; his playing was revered by countless jazz
musicians, quot; runs a typical commentary but even this claim is suspect. Fletcher
Henderson, Armstrong^s first major employer after
Oliver, made the trumpeter accept a cut in pay to join his band. Many accounts
suggest that Henderson, in fact , preferred the playing of cornetist Joe Smith, And
that Armstrong was hired only because Smith was unavailable. Smith lacked
Armstrong^s rhythmic drive, yet his warm sound and ease of execution could hardly
be faulted and may have been better receive by the average dancehall patron.
Sacred Child Research Paper
Models of Children s
What makes a child, a child goes hand in hand with the different models of childhood.
Two out of the many models I chose to go in depth with are the Sacred Child, and the
Romantic Child. There s a distinction between the two models, however sharing the
commonality of innocence. The Romantic Child is the idea that children should have
the freedom to play, the love for childhood, to explore, and to imagine. They are
bound to face some disappointment along their journey into adulthood. Theres the
idea that children see what adults can t. As for the Sacred Child, the child is viewed as
precious and admired. So precious they are in need of protection. The idea that the
children learn not to be risk takers, a sense of forgetfulness when it comes to problem

  • 2. District 9 Film Analysis For those who have not watched the film District 9, here is a quick summary of the movie. In 1982, aliens arrive on Earth, not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi National United, which is not concerned with the aliens welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent Wikus contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9. The filmwas directed by Neill Blomkampand starred Sharlto Copley(Wikus). It begins as a documentary style investigation and then as the film continues it becomes more conventional and character driven following Wikus and his transformation into a Prawn. The film s main themes are Xenophobia and Segregation. Xenophobia is characterized by a negative attitude towards foreigners, a dislike, a fear, or a hatred. Segregation as most people know is a separation of people or objects from others. When picking a critical approach to use for this essay two stuck out to me, Biographical and Mimetic. I chose biographical criticism to start with because I wanted to learn more about director Neill Blomkamp. I read many articles, biographies and interviews about the film producer. This quote is from an interview I found very informing. District 9 explores the issue of segregation and xenophobia. At first it shows a perspective of trying to

Apple has a host of products ranging from Laptops, Desktops, Mobile Phones and Multimedia Devices. The company has been extremely innovative in the field of multimedia and it owes it success to one of the greatest innovators, Steve Jobs. The company has always believed in innovation and that is the major reason why it has been so successful in the mobile phone segment. In recent years Apple is second only to Samsung in the Global Mobile Phone industry. However the operations have been largely based in the United States and in times of recession any organization needs to focus on economies of scale and thus focus on growth... The intangible aspects like after sales support and warranties are also best in class for the products and thus the user experience has been always very high. The product can be further categorised into three areas which are: Core: In this category the benefits or the service of the product is analysed. The products that Apple offers are high on service quality. Apple invests heavily into Research and Development and thus the services are of high quality. For any product or service there is a product life cycle in which there is a decline phase. The following figure illustrates the product life cycle for any product (Baker, 2007) With Apple the Growth has been substantial and it can be stated that the Products have reached a maturity stage and hence there is a chance of decline. This has also been evidenced to certain extent as Samsung has taken over as the market leader in the mobile phone segment. The emergence of cheaper brands like Lenovo etc has also been a challenge for IT products of Apple. However it is also true that Apple has always focussed on consumer trends and demands and thus has been capable of avoiding the decline stages. Further market development and diversification strategies have been suitably implemented
  • 4. Why US Consumers Buy Foreign Goods For the first time in many years, ordinary people in the US are worrying about the economic future of the country. The underlying reason for this worry is a realization that the secret perpetual motion engine of the economy has run short of what you might call fuel , for want of a better word. Here are the key steps in this critical cycle in the economic life of the nation: 1. US consumers buy foreign goods 2. Part of the profit from these sales is invested in additional foreign goods to be sold to US consumers and the remainder is invested in US financial institutions 3. The financial institutions lend the dollars to US consumers 4. US consumers buy foreign goods (that is, we return to step 1) This is a positive feedback loop. If... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, they are extremely controversial. People tend to have extremely strong opinions about credit cards. On one side, we have those who vehemently criticize credit cards as the modern evil that has brought financial ruin to so many Americans. At the other extreme, we have those who see credit cards necessary instruments for establishing and improving one s credit history and for learning financial restraint ( Credit cards, n.d.). So, which side is correct? Do credit cards spell financial doom or are they a useful and valuable tool in our society today? In order for us to honestly answer these questions, we must fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of credit cards. First, think about some of the possible advantages of having credit cards. The first thing that comes to my mind is convenience. Credit cards are so tiny that they can easily fit in your pocket. Also, most places readily take credit cards these days. And we cannot forget that credit cards can minimize our need to count money at the cash register or to wait to buy that must have product until we get our next paycheck. Therefore, it is accurate to say that credit cards are relatively convenient to carry and use ( Credit cards, n.d., Pros section). Moreover, credit cards are accepted in quite a number of foreign nations, making traveling or online purchases a whole lot simpler. Credit cards also give you much more peace
  • 5. Iran Contra Affair Research Paper The Iran Contra Affair The Iran Contra affair is one of the largest examples of what occurs when government communication breaks down. Within this communication breakdown, simple negligence over details or issues can create scandals that otherwise would not happen. This rocked the nation in the 1980s and is undoubtedly one of the largest scandals in American history. The Iran Contra affair consists of two different situations that are linked simply by money. The Contra portion of the Iran Contra affair began in Nicaragua where the United Statescontinued to be involved in the matters of other countries. In 1979 the Sandinista socialist group was able to take power over the previous dictator Somoza Garcia. With this the US became nervous,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within these hearings, many individuals involved were questioned extensively, in particular, Oliver North and John Poindexter. Immediately after the Iran Contra affair was leaked, Oliver North and his secretary worked to destroy as many documents related to the affair as possible. However, North missed a key document in which he described his entire plan of using funds from arms sales to Iran to support the Contras. Also after the leak, North was removed from the National Security Council and sent back to the marines. At his trial, Oliver North wore his green military uniform with his medals. Within the trial, North admitted to shredding documents and admitted that he was a central figure in the operation, but said that he also had asked for approval from higher figures. North was eventually pardoned by George W. Bush. The other main trial involved John Poindexter, the leader of the National Security Council who resigned when the story was leaked. In his immunized testimony, Poindexter took full responsibility for the affair and said that all information had ended at his line in the chain of command, and that nothing had been said to Reagan. Poindexter also said that he believed diverting funds was legal as it helped the large political goal of aiding the Contras, and that President Reagan would have supported the operation had he known about it. This lack of attention was a major flaw during Reagan s
  • 6. Case Study Pepcid Ac Pepcid AC Case Study Problem Statement: On August 1, Johnson Johnson/Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Co. (JJM) came up with an over the counter drug (OTC) Pepcid AC that would prevent/ treat heartburn and stomach distress. The drug was not approved by the advisory committee due to the fact that it neither prevented nor treated heartburn, thus restrained the Pepcid AC to be the first H2 switch entrant to the market. The target for JJM should be to make Pepcid AC the first H2 switch entrant in the market with both treatment/prevention claim with negligible side effects, unique customer base of 2,316,000( See(1) in appendix) and Sales target of $ 68million(See (2) in Appendix) by August 1995. The time taken to validate treatment/prevention claim of heartburn would be less approximately four months considering the amount of research that has gone in 1993. Research such as provocative meal clinical trial, and consumer behavior usage were focused on stomach distress and not heartburn. The reason FDA rejected heartburn claim is because of insufficient data to prove its claim. Moving forward the way they could modify the research where JJM specifically focuses on heartburn and gets more data collected with respect to heartburn alone, also making sure that the composition of Pepcid AC used in this study is same as the one that is launched. Thus, by getting these results and FDA takes very less time to approve OTC drug, JJM should not have any problem in launching the product in 5 months as a new Pepcid AC that treats/prevents both stomach distress and
  • 7. How To Survive Tornadoes The alarm sounds and hear the crackling, like popcorn. It is hard to move, hard to think, hard to speak. Tornadoes cause a lot of stress and are very hard to escape. It is very possible to survive. There are ways to survive tornadoes and we ll go through them right now. Firstly, what are tornadoes and how are they created. Tornadoes are rotating columns of air. They can be very dangerous. Warm moist air from lower parts of the world collide with cold dry air to make a supercell. The supercell has a lot of windand is a horizontal column of air. Then, with difference in the airs speed, it causes updraft, now forming as a Tornado. Now, who is affected by it? Well the answer is the Middle East part of America or in science terms, Tornado Alley.
  • 8. The Initiation Of Formal Education Essay Prekindergarten marks the initiation of formal education for most young children in the United States. Educators in these classrooms often focus their teaching on the integration of learning and play. Children in prekindergarten, however, often learn more than material outlined in curricular standards. A child s introduction to preschool often their first institutional experience forces them to adopt a subject position in this new social context (Mansson 8). That is, children become socialized by the formal school setting; they develop individual and group manners, classroom etiquette, and interpersonal skills. With these social lessons come a series of social beliefs, norms, and expectations, not least among them, genderand gender roles. As innocent and naГЇve as some may believe them to be, preschoolers are attentive and perceptive; they are not immune to the explicit and implicit ideas and messages about gender that surround them. Early lessons in gender, gender roles, power, and inequality become ingrained in young minds and often serve to frame rather, to confine ideas about ability, potential, and achievement. There exists a significant volume of research on various topics of gender in the prekindergarten setting, including gender salience, gender roles, and gender differences. Utilizing existing research and classroom experiences, this paper thus explores the nuances of gender as they manifest themselves in the prekindergarten classroom setting and provides
  • 9. Moral Values In Ancient Rome A long time ago, a civilization was created in Italy s west coast, at around 1000 B.C. This civilization was called, Ancient Rome. ancient Rome was one of the greatest empires in history (The New Book of Knowledge). Its geographical position in the center of the peninsula, near the sea, contributed to its growth in importance and the adventurous character of its people. (Levine, Irving R.) There were a lot of things that were very important for the citizens of that civilization in those times. Important things like: how Rome was found, the religions that were created in Rome, things about the statesman Julius Cesar, and also about the founder of the Roman empireand the first emperor of it, Augustus. Citizens needed to have moral values and a good education so they could contribute to the progress of making Rome a little bit better for everyone in the area. There were some people in Ancient Romewho just chose to not collaborate with the helping of making it better because maybe they weren t educated and didn t know what to do if they didn t have money, so they just did what others told them to do or maybe they just didn t want to collaborate. As Dr. Kara Cooney from the University of California, Los Angeles said, ... and it is very telling that in the sack of Rome in 455 when the emperor flees, the people that are said to have kill them, are romans, the roman mop who kills their own emperor... (Cooney) This quotes says how Romans from Ancient Rome just killed their emperor without any knowledge of what they were actually
  • 10. Analysis Of The Play Antigone For centuries men have been finding ways to gain control over everything and everyone. One group that has been oppressed by men throughout history are women. Men have placed rules and regulations upon women making them seen as unequal and inferior. Was it fear? Was it the hunger for power? Was is the highness of superiority? Whatever the reasons were, men had to be seen as the highest being next to whom they worshiped. In the play Antigoneby Sophocles, the audience is exposed to the roles of men and women in an ancient Greece society known as Thebes. Although ancient Greece was a male dominant society where women had as much freedom as a slave, Sophocles main character in the play, Antigone, is an example of a brave, strong minded woman who goes against the limitations that were unfairly set upon women during that time to do what she believes is right. In this play, gender roles assists in the process of portraying the story since it affects some of the decisions of the characters and helps lead the story into the climax. The beginning of the play begins with Antigone and her sister, Ismene. Antigone presents her plan of burying their brother, Polynices, whose body had been denied a proper burial by their uncle, King Creon, since in his eyes Polynices had been seen as an enemy to the city. Antigone wanted Ismene to accompany her, but Ismene immediately refused in fear of the consequences. Ismene states We are women and we do not fight with men/ We are subject to them
  • 11. Database Design in an Institutional Nursing Setting Database Design for Knowledge and Information Sharing in an Institutional Nursing Setting Introduction This paper details the need for creating a database to track the conducting of group sessions by nurses in a large healthcare institution ward, and presents an overview of a plan for effective database usage. The knowledge and information sharing by and among nurses in this group is both required by administration and desirable from a healthcare perspective, yet the perceived difficulties in actually creating such a database have prevented its implementation. A conceptual data model, including the key entities and relationships that will be involved in maintaining and utilizing the database, is provided below, and a visualization of the relationships involved in the database appears in the appendix. Database Proposal: Promoting Sharing and Accuracy Group patient meetings or sessions with a variety of healthcare personnel are supposed to take place regularly, with records of these meetings and reasons for non meetings recorded by nursing staff (and groups often led or overseen by nursing staff, as well). This is in keeping with findings by Rosner et al (2011) that, treatment of group therapy under naturalistic conditions in patient clinical setting can be effective, and the regular maintenance of records is both useful in treatment and is required for various reasons by administration (p. 216). Though a group notebook exists for the recording of meeting information
  • 12. The Hidden Recesses Of The Mind He that has eyes to see and ears to hear may convince himself that no mortal can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he chatters with his fingertips; betrayal oozes out of him at every pore. And thus the task of making conscious the most hidden recesses of the mind is one which it is quite possible to accomplish. Sigmund Freud, Dora:An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria All human writing contains hidden pieces of the unconscious mind buried within layers of symbols and psychological defenses. When one writes something, all previous experiences, feelings, and thoughts are brought together to form whatever the person wishes to convey. Hidden emotions and feelings that are being suppressed by psychological defences are often expressed unconsciously revealing the speaker s hidden secrets. Logan LeBlanc s squibs contain multiple different psychological defences, but Intellectualization and escapism appear the most often; they are usually used together in his writing. Almost every time a very personal topic comes up in one of LeBlanc s logical trains of thought, the conversation suddenly changes to either something that he deems happy or acceptable, or he starts stating facts about one topic or another. One example is when he says This would mean that even though most people are strangers, they are still family in a way after talking about the relationship between family and strangers in squib number one. After saying this, he immediately escapes his thoughts and changes

  • 14. Role Of Mental Illness In Prisons Closing Doors on Mental Institutions and Opening New One s for Homelessness and Incarceration Millions of Americans suffer from a mental illness throughout the years, and a majority of them are not getting an adequate treatment. Individuals who experience a mental illness are found in populations such as the homeless and jails. Between one fourth and one third of the homeless population suffers from a serious mental illness(Folsom, Hawthorne, Lindamer, Gilmer, Bailey, Golshan, Garcia, Unutzer, Hough, Jeste, 2005) and at least 16 percent of inmates in jails and prisons suffer from a mental illness (treatment advocacy center 2010). The care for the mentally ill in mental institutions has been significantly cut down throughout the passing years.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to receive a treatment, the patient must be cooperative and have will power to make a change for themselves. Often times, homeless people reject a treatment in housing because they consider the way they are going to be treated. If a homeless with a mental illness recalls bad experiences with their treatment most likely they wouldn t like to come back or looking forward to find another kind of treatment. The problem becomes evident when the mental health community and the homeless person do not agree on expectations of each other s role and needs. Mental health professionals have an interest for structure and supervision while the homeless mentally ill consider the neighborhood that they will be moving into, the amount of space that is available for them, and the safety that it offers them (Linhorst, 2015). Both parties definitely need to work together in order to make things work, but professionals serving the mentally ill really need to have in mind and understand the necessities of these individuals. Now the situation with the mentally ill in prisons is different considering their choices are limited. One of the ways to minimize problems with mentally inmates is to immediately recognize any kind of possible problems during the time they first arrive to jail. Once in jail the first thing to keep in mind is that the mentally ill need to receive an appropriate treatment. This can be done by the managing of psychiatric medications especially to those with a serious mentally illness and it is not necessary to be in a hospital setting to do this. At the time of release an inmate should be given a written plan for a psychiatric follow up (Treatment Advocacy Center, 2014.) The result of this would be a decrease in inmates coming back to

The society of Gilead is founded on what is to be considered a return to traditional values, gender roles and the subjugation of women by men, and the Bible is used as the guiding principle. Instead, the overall atmosphere of the poem may remind readers of Eliot and Whitman. First of all, once again according to the anthology, To Brooklyn Bridge is a hopeful reply to The Wasteland, where Eliot writes of a fractured world, a perspective Crane shares, but his response paints a more optimistic picture. Crane accomplishes this by using the Brooklyn Bridge as its prime symbol... to restore meaning and unity to a fragmented and dissonant modern world (Axelrod 626). The Bridge is a manmade effort that is capable of connecting the fragmented world. This hope is also reminiscent of Whitman s ideas of an idealistic and unified America. Yet, a more significant influence from Whitman is the theme of repressed homosexuality that is present in the poem. With both poets being homosexual, it is no surprise that Crane was influenced by Whitman. The second to last stanza

While it s very commonplace for people to disagree with each other for political reasons, a lot of the criticism Greenberg got for End Times was due to uncertainty about why the children were crying, and speculation that the children may have been abused. According to ASHA standards in 2005, a central processing disorder refers to difficulties in the perceptual processing of auditory information in the central nervous systemand the neurobiological activity that underlies the processing and gives rise to the electrophysiological auditory potentials (ASHA 2005). Recent evidence has declared auditory processing disorders to be a legitimate clinical disorder resulting from confirmation of the link between well defined lesions of the central nervous system and deficits on behavioral and electrophysiological central auditory measures (Musiek, F. There is a significant difference between the receptors for audition and speech processing. As he says, in determination to worship only the god created by our own love of the good, to respect only the heaven which inspires the insight of our best moments (pg.51). I disagree with Russell s argument because worshiping our insights does not reflect reality. Our personal ideals are not realistic. This paper will examine Russell s arguments of his position of worshipping our good instincts rather than the universal power through his idea of freedom, human virtue and by turning indignation to resignation. The second part of this paper will critically analyze Russell s position. Bertrand Russell is concerned with people, whom he calls savages worshipping the universal power. These savages respect the power more than themselves because they find the power greater than anything they see in themselves. Their thoughts and beliefs are of those the power devours. Russell suggests that we should question whether the universal power deserves this respect. Russell concludes that we must follow our very own good instinct, which will bring us true freedom rather than the universal evil power. As he says, the vision of beauty is possible only to unfettered contemplation, to thoughts not weighted by the load of eager wishes (pg.52).

  • 37. The Quest For Peace And Justice When people think of speeches, they usually refer to important people talking about important topics. The idea of importance often differs time to time ranging from Abortions to Gun Laws. Martin Luther King, JR. is one of those important figures, as he led a variety of peaceful protests from the boycott for Rosa Parks to demonstrations in Birmingham in the fight for Civil Rights. Not to mention, he led the nonwhites in a peaceful resistance of nonviolenceagainst unfair racial views. Out of all of his speeches, one unique one which stands out is The Quest for Peace and Justice. It shows the concept where mankind has still not matured enough to where each person of differing race is able to live next to each other peacefully. Unless mankind can get past the walls of racial injustice, ignorance of poverty, and the true evil of war, then the battle against racial prejudice will end in the worst scenario possible. Mankind already has the ability to solve all of its obstacles by uniting together as a family connected by love and god. In fact, there are two other speeches comparable in terms of influence and emotion. The most commonly known I Have a Dream speech on August 28th, 1963 and A Time to Break Silence as King believes the people must see the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese as a peaceful approach is the best approach. Of course, The Quest for Peace and Justice is inferior to those two simply because it is overloading on information, unclear, and unheard
  • 38. Reality Shows And The Reality Of Reality Television,... Nowadays, there is a wide selection of reality shows, which audiences can pick and watch. The reason why there are so many different types of reality shows is due to the expansion of the broadcasting industry and the need to ingratiate the taste of the public. Although most people will agree the term reality shows is used to identify shows that have arisen since the 21st century, the appearance of reality television shows actually emerged earlier than everyone thought. For example, Allen Funt s Candid Camera, which was the first reality show in the United States, arose in 1948 wherein real people respond to funny pranks or unusual situations for the first time ever under hidden cameras (Beck 6). Apart from the entertainment reality shows, non fictional entertainment shows such as documentaries about ordinary people, quiz and game shows also appeared during the 1990s (Beck 4). Therefore, the aim for people to watch reality shows at that time is entertainment and education. Yet, as time progresses, distinct subgenres of reality shows such as the makeover shows, celebrity reality shows as well as dating shows developed in the 21st century and the realness of reality shows has become controversial. The authenticity of reality shows has become debatable not only because of these people are oftentimes getting paid to be filmed on camera, but also because exaggerations of manliness, beauty, and wealth are often portrayed in these programs, thus causing audiences to consider them

At room temperature, fluorine is a yellow gas, chlorine is a pale green gas, bromine is a red liquid, and iodine is a purple solid. Astatine is a radioactive element, therefore it exists only in small amounts. All the halogens exist in diatomic molecules. They have high ionization energies and are the most electronegative elements. Their electron configuration ns2 np5 make them perfect elements in order to react with Group 1 and 2 metals since they want an electron which Group 1 and 2 are willing to give. It was the triiodide ion that is mostly responsible for the orange red brown color since iodide was colourless and since iodine is not very soluble in water. As the reaction was progressing, the coloured solution began to fade to orange, yellow and finally became colourless. As these colour changes occur, the temperature of the solution was decreasing gradually until it has finally reached room temperature. This change in colour was due to two factors. First, all of the solid and dissolved iodine had reacted with the zinc to produce iodide and zinc ions, both of which are colourless substances. Secondly, the red brown solution of triiodide ions also reacted with zinc metal to produce the colourless iodide ions. In the other experiment three pieces of universal pH indicator were placed on a white spotting tile and drop of chlorine water, bromine water and iodine water were transferred on each one of them. Essay about Islamic Influence in Western Medicine Just as the Arabs preserved the knowledge of the Greek and Roman civilizations, the Europeans were able to use and build off the knowledge built in the Islamic world. This wealth of knowledge was the collection of ideas pulled from every corner of the Islamic empire. Rulers collected Greek, Chinese, Indian, and Persian literary works in vast libraries for the education of the masses. Western Europe slowly learned bits and pieces of this knowledge through trade and diffusion of culture. One medium through which the west learned a great deal was the translated medical texts from scholars such as Ib n Sina (Avicenna). However, in the medieval Islamic empire many surgeons were making careful and quantitative observations to treat diseases. For instance, Physician Avicenna wrote many medical doctrines and was the founder of many surgeries. He revolutionized ways of performing surgeries such as removal of kidney stones, intubation and the use of clinical trials for medicine (1). His book Cannon of Medicine was still in use in universities in the 17th century. This book gave a base off which Europeans could learn and pioneer their own medical practices. Disease often consumed cities in Europe and the Catholic Church often blamed the suffering on the sinfulness of the people. The Catholic Church would profit off this idea and as a result, the church taught repentance as the only way to stay healthy. Nevertheless, as more knowledge from the Islamic world traveled to Europe, ways of disease prevention and understanding began to diffuse. The largest gain made through use of Arabic texts was the introduction of a simplified version of the scientific method. An organized method to prove scientific questions aided in the treatment of disease, as well as in all areas of science. Up until the mid 15th century, scholars believed that blood traveled from the right side of the heart to the left through the septum. It was not until a physician, Ib n al Nafis, made careful observations and noted that blood could not pass through

Power And Control In William Shakespeare s The Tempest In William Shakespeare s romantic comedy play, The Tempest, we witness an endless amount of power struggles and scheming amongst characters, all in the hopes of achieving one thing: complete control over the remote island in which they re stranded on. Throughout the play, characters choose their allies, set targets on their enemies, and manipulate situations and one another in an attempt to reach their end goals. Each character that strives to colonize the island has different motives based on their place in the social hierarchy and their relationships to fellow characters. However, each character seeking control over the island not only has their own motives, but also their own vision for what the island could be under their sole jurisdiction. The three main players seeking to colonize the island and make their own vision of what it could be into a reality are Prospero, Caliban, and Gonzalo. Between these three characters we see relationships between the colonizer, the colonized, and one character who envisions the island as an opportunity to create the perfect society. Power and control are prominent themes in Shakespeare s The Tempest, as the audience is faced with severe questions of morality and who has rightful claim of the island. As the play begins, we learn of the master/servant relationships that are already in place on the island. Prospero is the current all powerful and omnipotent ruler of the island, who uses strategical social tactics of abuse and manipulation

Kennedy, the Democratic nominee, had only been elected by a one tenth of a percent margin against his Republican party opponent, Richard M. Nixon. John F. Kennedy had made specific decisions as the Democratic candidate that helped him leap to victory. Specifically, JFK s performance during the first televised debate, decision to focus on key large states, Houston tape, and other decisions had overall led to him winning the election of 1960. On the other end, Nixon had made some inaccuracies and mistakes that cost him getting elected. Specifically, Nixon s hospitalization, promise to visit all 50 states, performance and appearance on the first nationally viewed television and other errors are what led to JFK s win. Because of Nixon s and Kennedy s decisions during the campaign of 1960, it would, after all, lead to JFK s election. JFK had made very crucial decisions during his run for President in which helped him to beat Nixon. • 45. Theseus And The Minotaur There are many examples of heroes throughout history and in story books that convey great messages, but what makes your leaders heroes? There are many attributes that make a hero but there are three main areas. To be a hero, one must be willing to make many sacrifices, be humble and not expect anything from the actions, and make positive changes. To be a hero means to sacrificesomething for someone else no matter the circumstances or dangers. An example of this is in the myth Theseus and the Minotaur. It gives a great example of sacrifice and heroism. Powerful king Minos of Crete demands Athenian women and men every year to feed to the Minotaur. When Theseus heard about this, he was not happy. He took the place of one of the sacrificed men and went to the labyrinth of the Minotaur to try and kill the beast himself. Theseus then expressed his feelings of frustration by saying saying, When it is time to send the next tribute, I will go as one of them and I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our people. Theseus was strong and was willing to put himself in danger for the safety of his people. Not many people have the courage to sacrifice themselves. Parents make sacrifices every day.
