Large, established organizations fear disruption from big tech and startups. In trying to thwart that they have resorted to several approaches to innovation to scale such as labs, acquisitions and spin-outs. Most have not succeed often due to the impediments that corporate culture and organizational design bring. The Innovation Engine is a framework developed by Andrew Breen which addresses these issues. Andrew has built this not only from his experience building eight tech startups but also in his current role building a Lean startup at American Express.

PwC implemented an internal innovation platform called "PwC spark!" to encourage ideas from employees. The platform received over 1,000 engagements from employees, including 101 idea submissions and 948 votes. Several ideas were quickly implemented, including 10 "no brainers" within 6 months. The platform helped make employees feel comfortable sharing opinions to spur innovation within the large professional services firm.

Queensland Government faces complex service challenges that design is uniquely placed to address. With a drive to put customers at the centre service delivery, the Government is on a journey embed design practices at scale in order a more customer-centred approach to designing and improving government services.
Meld Studios worked alongside OSSSIO and other state government departments to apply an human-centred design approach to developing a framework for building design capability. This resulted in a solution appropriate for and specific to the context of government, accommodating the diversity of roles, existing processes, culture and constraints.
We co-designed a capability building framework that contextualises human-centred design specifically within government, acknowledging the nuance of operations and integrating with existing processes. We engaged with staff in a diversity of roles and levels across government agencies to create a shared understanding of the environment in which services are created and delivered including people involved and existing processes. Together we identified the factors that contribute to the successful adoption of design, and the constraints and challenges unique to the government context.
This approach to embedding a human-centred design mindset and practices was piloted on a series of live projects with design problems that involved customer service centres, culture change, physical and digital service experiences, from research through to prototyping and testing of concepts.

The Cookbook for Successful Internal Startups
Over the past several years, companies have had to change to meet the threat of accelerating competition coming from startups and other global industry players. Digitalization is the name of the times, and many companies are evaluating what to do in order to stay in the game.
Our answer to this question is to use internal startups as an innovation accelerator mechanism to better select and execute the correct innovations. This mechanism brings cheaper innovation execution and faster time to market, which eventually transforms the company into a growth company.
Internal startups should have freedom from the rest of the organization but still be integrated into the corporation. Freedom is needed for quick execution and market trials, as well as for refocusing based on the feedback. Still, corporations have many assets and competencies, which will come handy during the process. For example, legal and pre-production services are just a call away.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Partecipate alla presentazione per immergervi in una storia di interoperabilità, standard e formati aperti, per poi discutere del ruolo importante che i contributori hanno in una comunità open source sostenibile.
