Brian McCarthy is investigating transformative learning in the context of digital media education. His research question focuses on evaluating how transformative learning is instantiated in digital media courses. His goals are to evaluate transformative learning practices and methods within this context and refine the core tenets of transformative theory. Over the past academic year, McCarthy conducted a literature review and drafted a paper and experimental design. For the next year, he plans to finalize data collection methods and implement an experimental setup to carry out a case study on transformative learning.

Developing an online course on telecollaboration for teachers: A reflection o...Angelos Konstantinidis
Telecollaboration is flourishing yet there are still few courses in higher education that offer to in-service teachers the fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to organise and conduct a telecollaborative project in their own educational settings. This paper aims to provide a resource to teacher educators and course designers who seek to design a course on telecollaboration in higher or post-secondary education. Through reflective practice (Bolton, 2018) and adhering to the principles of educational design research (McKenney & Reeves, 2012), the process of design and development of an online master’s course for language teachers is described. The article begins by describing the context and discussing the underlying rationale and overall course aims and learning outcomes, while the syllabus and assessment tasks are reviewed next. Course evaluation throughout the years is briefly reported as well as other outcomes. The study concludes by pondering on the challenges faced.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Editor's Notes
So my thesis is about conceptualising the purpose and practice of fostering transformative learning.
I am continuously asking myself this question - What is it about transformative learning that is most helpful in informing practice? So I intend to evaluate transformative learning practice and methods within this context.
And just as important what are the effective practices for promoting transformative learning in the classroom
Evaluate, test and refine the core tenets of transformative theory. All researchers in this area agree that fostering transformative learning is seen as teaching for change. The core tenets or elements are the essential components that frame a transformative approach to teaching, for example Experience, Critical reflection, Discourse and more. Consequently, how does the teaching set up in the digital media courses shape the practice of transformative learning?
The literature review is still ongoing- it is a continuous process
My first priority was to find out what research in this area is being done relating to my research question
The literature review included reading from primary sources
Reading around the subject
To quote Rudestam and Newton 1992 p. 49 “ Build an argument not a library” . I take this on board
My draft paper entitled ‘Fostering transformative learning in a creative digital media class in a third level college’. This paper describes how students’ experiences can be facilitated through classroom discussion, digital story writing and game development. Learning is about examining one’s assumptions, preconceived ideas, values and making changes as a result.
Conceptualising transformational learning will enrich our students’ education by using digital stories and game developmen. Again I will be considering how the teaching setting shape the practice of transformative learning. I will have the opportunity whilst drafting this paper to answer questions which will be discussed in my thesis such as What are the successes, strengths and outcomes of transformative learning and equally important what are the risks, challenges and caveats when practicing if.
Researching my paper has enabled me to think deeply (hopefully like my students) the underlying aims and values that inform the selection of digital media content for the focus groups.
Transformative learning theory that underpins the way that digital media contents are organised
The pedagogical principles that underlie the way the contents are taught, facilitated, learned and assessed
The draft experimental design will meet the specific objects planned for my study. I will ensure that I am collecting the right type of data to answer the research question.
The data collection period will be up on the Gannt chart
The period for Data reduction will be indicated
I intend to deliver a pre-course introduction (presently in discussion with my lead supervisor) to students on the concepts involved in transformative learning,
“how students’ assumptions and values might change resulting in new learning” (Mazirow. 1978). For example, the students will be facilitated in the critical analysis of story extracts. Students will be shown strategies of how to reflect critically resulting in a shift in perception resulting in change (new learning).
How students’ experiences can be facilitated through classroom discussion, digital story telling and game development.
To quote Mazirow (2006) “..critical reflection is a core component of transformative learning”. Consequently, learning outcomes that transformative learning is taking place will be that students will examine their pre conceived ideas, recognising their assumptions that might be without foundation resulting in new learning.
My Paper in progress - ‘Fostering transformative learning in a creative digital media class in a third level college’. This paper describes how students’ experiences can be facilitated through classroom discussion, digital story writing and game development. Learning is about examining one’s assumptions, preconceived ideas, values and making changes as a result. Conceptualising transformational learning will enrich our students’ education by using digital stories and game development because narrative learning theory will give the facilitator and student alike an understanding of the learning process.
