TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY WITH SPECIAL
REFERENCE TO KOUNDAMPALAYAM OF COIMBATORE

INTRODUCTION
Misconceptions are many among the ordinary populace as a part of gender
dysphoria. Gender refers to the variation of characteristics, attitude and roles typically
connected with biological sex – often placed on a gamut between masculine and
feminine. But a mishmash of these two genders in an individual will absolutely
differentiate from a common man. They are called Transgenders. They are the least
group having the largest risk. The degree of risk starts from the very basis of life. To be
very crystal clear, when every individual probe for the future career and prospects of
life, it is at this moment that these people are in real search of their own gender identity
to understand who they are. Being secluded from family, social stigma, school drop outs,
illiterate, unemployed, poverty, prone to corporal abuse, homelessness, health hazards,
nullified credentials, arrest on false allegations, psychological trauma, suicidal attempts,
economic curb and political inability, coupled with HIV, prostitution, nabbing and
trafficking (human and child). The present study is conducted with the aim to empower
the lives of Transgender community and make them live a regal life. This article
enlightens on various violence that the trans community is literally facing.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To understand the concept of trans-women and violence.
2. To recognize various reasons for trans bashing amongst transgender community.
3. To offer suggestions to overcome sexual abuse based on the findings of the study.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1) Transgender people are subjected to multi-faceted inconveniences based solely on
their gender identity towards rife discrimination, denial of family, fear of rejection
and isolation, property risks, depressions, politically disfranchised, security issues,
human rights violations, victims of civic and basic amenities, alcoholic influence,
problems relating to marriage and adoption, disavowal of electoral rights and
meager aid from government etc.
2) There is a need to establish link between transgender people and common populace
in order to facilitate the empowerment of transgender in the new millennium as they
are sidelined.
3) The current and future generation of researchers should not face any transphobic
attitudes and must not carry any misconceptions about them. This initiated the
researcher to evaluate their status, structuring high profile of transgender in
attainment of a missionary zeal and economic assurance in forth coming years.
METHODOLOGY
1) A well structured questionnaire was administered
followed by interview schedule constituting to be a
part of primary data. Secondary data includes books,
magazines, journals, periodicals, newspapers, TV
channels and other related websites
2) Simple Random sampling method was undertaken in
the study. Reliability Test was conducted and
Cronbach’s Alpha Value 0.89 was arrived.
3) The Manchester of South India “Kovai” also called as
Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu was the area of the study
with a sample size of 40 for the Pilot Study.
OBJECTIVE 1 : AN OVERVIEW
i. Transgender Women: Transgender people are called as Thirunar.
ii. Thirunangai for Trans-feminine people and Thirunambi for Trans-masculine
people.
iii. They are usually called as Aravaanis in Tamil
iv. Tamil Nadu has an estimated population of more than 30,000 transgender people.
v. The highest number of transgender recorded is in Salem District
vi. In Coimbatore alone there are 400 who have been registered
vii. Sahodhari Foundations is working behind to uplift this community with helpline
Manasu.
viii. Tamil Nadu State in India was the first to introduce a Transgender Welfare Policy.
ix. Violence according to WHO is the intentional use of physical force or to threatened
against oneself resulting in in injury, death, psychological harm, mal development,
or deprivation.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF TRANSGENDER
VIOLENCE
• India has an estimated 4 million Hijras recorded back more than 4,000 years.
• Maximum number of eunuchs found in Uttar Pradesh state constituting 5% of
population.
• Statistics vary between 50 and 80 % for HIV amongst Transgender.
• Majority of them belonging to the age of 23-26 years are dying of diseases or
suicide.
• According to 2011 Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender
Discrimination Survey found that 12 percent of transgender youth report being
sexually assaulted.

RATING EFFECTIVENESS OF FACTORS
FINDINGS
1) 50% of the respondents belong to the age group of 25-30 years.
2) 27.5% belongs to the age group of 30-35 years.
3) 17.5% belongs to the age group of 35-40 years.
4) 5% of the respondents belong to the age group of 40-45 years.
5) Out of 40 respondents 20 respondents possess the Physical assaults.
6) It is observed from the above table that using demeaning words and molestation is
ranked first by the respondents followed by cat calling for prostitution, Criticizing
and condemning in public and Gang Rapes is ranked third, Pornography is
ranked fourth, the fifth rank is observed for sodomy and the last rank is charges
for criminal assaults.
SUGGESTIONS
Family
 The transgender child should not be left in isolation, so that they are not forced to
move out of the home and live an undignified way of living.
Transgenders
 Every Transgender should personally try to end it and should not involve in
begging or prostitution for their living.
 Alcoholic influence and drug addiction has to be completely be rehabilitated.
 The social stigma arises of their dressing and this has to be carefully handled.
 Seek employment opportunities and this can prove a promotional life style and
wrong connotation about transgender community may be highly removed.
NGO’s and Government
 Anti bullying and anti-harassment workshops will have to be specially organized.
 Create awareness among Trans women to protect their rights.
 Constituting an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is to be formed
 Toll free numbers and free interpreter service could be contacted to lodge a
complaint.
 Criminal justice system should be more effective and law reformation is required.
Heavy penalties against the offender should be charged on the offenders
 Appropriate work conditions in respect of work, leisure, health and hygiene to
further ensure that there is no hostile environment towards women at work places.
Public
o Encourage them by giving financial assistance to start the business
o Medical aid can be granted by means of donations to do SRS.
