Diesel trains are powered by a diesel engine and come in several types including diesel-electric and diesel-hydraulic. They have a bulky rounded shape and are fitted with headlights and ditch lights. Early useful diesel trains included the 1924 SŽD Eel2 in Kiev. Electric trains are powered by overhead lines or third rails and were pioneered by Robert Davidson and Werner von Siemens. They have higher performance and lower costs than steam trains. Steam trains produce power from coal or oil burned to produce steam that moves pistons connected to wheels. They were first developed in the UK and dominated rail transport until being replaced by diesel and electric trains.
