The document analyzes the genre, representation, narrative, audience, and media language of the film trailer. It finds that the trailer effectively establishes the horror genre through its blue color tone, dark costumes, innocent children in white, and stereotypical abandoned house setting. It also examines Daniel Radcliffe's character as both a stereotypical struggling male hero and a non-stereotypical target. The narrative follows a lawyer who must solve a mystery terrorizing a remote village during high tides. The target audience is those 12 and older who may be drawn to seeing Daniel Radcliffe in a new role since the Harry Potter films.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. GENRE:
This trailer is a perfect example for a horror genre, and it is shown through all
the media language elements. Throughout the trailer, the brightness and
contrast are changed to give a blue tint to the footage. This enigma creates a
cold and typical atmosphere to it. All the characters clothes in the film are
dark and simple colours, and as the trailer continues Daniel Radcliffe's tend
to become a little more distraught than others, portraying to the audience that
he faces a struggle. What’s more, the children in the film are shown in white
clothing, illustrating them to be innocent. This is a common occurrence horror
films tend to use, as we now know that they will most likely me targeted at.
Another thing that illustrates to the audience what type of genre this film is, is
the setting and scenery used. The stereotypical old abandoned house and
isolated village are used as the main setting, and props such as old
chandeliers and creepy toys continue this freaky setting.
Andrew Sarris’ theory can be used, as the genre has such a recognisable
style and draws on an already existing audience.
3. REPRESENTATION:
Daniel Radcliffe can be seen as both a stereotypical and non-stereotypical
male character through this film trailer.
His clothes are torn and burnt in some of the scenes in a montage of clips
towards the end, showing that he has been through a struggle in a fight for
survival. This could be seen as being stereotypical representation, as the man
is the one fighting the unknown. Furthermore, a short clip of a woman in real
distress is also shown. In both Mise en scene (performance) and
cinematography (high angle) it portrays her as being a stereotypical vulnerable
character, as she has obviously been targeted at.
However, Daniel Radcliffe could also be seen in an un-stereotypical
representation of a male, as he is also being targeted at by the unknown.
4. NARRATIVE:
A young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, (the protagonist) is sent to a remote village to
examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh house due to its recently
deceased owner, where he soon discovers that something is terrorizing the
local village. After spending a number of nights in the house (cut off to the
village during every high tide) the mystery begins to deepen, and Arthur
finds himself in a race (an active character) against time to save his family.
Propp’s theory could also be used in the narrative, as the ghost is the clear
villain, and Arthur (Daniel Radcliffe) is our stereotypical hero.
5. AUDIENCE:
The target audience for this film is aimed for people the age of 12+ as it is
rated as a 12a, therefore the majority of its audience would still be in
education. This makes sense considering they casted world known Harry
Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe, to play the lead as our protagonist and hero,
Arthur Kipps. Therefore with his (and the Harry Potter films) popularity,
Daniel Radcliffe’s previous fans are persuaded to go and see this film,
creating a much wider target audience and greater success.
The target audience for this trailer could be considered as passive (in
comparison to active films such inception that acquire more attention)
as the trailer doesn’t need an awful lot of concentration from the audience
due to its simple narrative (the purpose of this film is only to scare and
entertain the audience).
